Candidate Profile: Bob Edwards

Filed under:   by Justene @ 11:13 am

Bob Lynn Edwards is a Democrat but he sounds like a Republican:

“I PLEDGE NOT TO SIGN ANY LEGISLATION INTO LAW WHICH INCLUDES BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO INCREASING SALES TAXES, STATE INCOME TAXES, ALCOHOL TAXES, GASOLINE TAXES, CIGARETTE TAXES, PROPERTY TAXES, AND USE FEES. FURTHER, I WILL SIGN LEGISLATION WHICH REPEALS THE INCREASE IN VEHICLE REGISTRATION FEES.”

[all caps his]

Why is he a Democrat? Well, he’s anti-gun and pro-choice. Sounds like Arnold to me. He’s also a family lawyer in Fremont who has enough clients and doesn’t need the governor’s job.

Candidate Profile: Sara Ann Hanlon

Filed under:   by Justene @ 2:09 pm

Sara Ann Hanlon is a 61 year old graphic designer from La Mirada, who has been Mayor of Signal Hill. From the Long Beach Press-Telegram:

Hanlon said her political principles remain the same: She is running for office because of the lack of service provided to the majority of California constituents. It was the same platform she used to win her council seat and Hanlon says the ability to manage a small city successfully involves many of the same skills needed to manage a state, though obviously on a much larger scale.

Bird-Brained Justice

Filed under:   by Xrlq @ 12:39 pm

Death penalty opponents frequently cite the large number of reversals as evidence that the death penalty is flawed. Anyone who seriously buys that argument would do well to read this case (PDF file) from yesterday, in which the California Supreme Court reversed the death sentence of James Matthew Heard, who had been convicted of the extremely grisly and depraved murder of 14 11-year old Katrina Brown. Indeed the murder was so depraved that I’d urge anyone who recently ate to come back and read this post later. Readers with weak stomachs probably should skip this entry entirely.

Once again, it’s time to announce the winners for the Watcher’s Council. The winning Council entry was “Endgame” by Exultate Justi. The winning non-Council entry was “The Long Road Home,” by L.T. Smash. Congrats to all nominees.

The Council still has one opening.

Candidate Profile: Cruz Bustamante

Funny, for all of the marginalized candidates with no hope of winning, I forgot to profile the one that has gotten the most coverage from the media, Cruz Bustamante. Fortunately, Stefan Sharkansky has this one covered.
