The Go-Betweens

The sixth album by this criminally ignored Australian guitar-pop band. These timeless songs, though recorded in 1988, sound like they could have been recorded yesterday. You can get into this on first listen and it doesn't get boring. Great pop-songwriting. The bonus disc includes the single version of "Love Goes On!" and a bunch of bonus tracks. You have to get this album if you haven't already. HAVE to.

The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow

Here's something most all of you have seen before. Got this my senior year of high school from my buddy Ian. We were lucky enough to catch these guys in concert before "Garden State" launched them into the mainstream and into the ipods of every-fucking-body (including uncool people, ew). But hey now they are probably a lot richer, so that's good. This is my favorite album of theirs, probably because it's the first one i heard.

Boris - Pink

I've got the majority of Boris' discography so it'll all get up on here eventually, but I'll start with the album that got me into them, also probably my favorite Boris record. Pink is an absolute monster, a Japanese metal sledgehammer to the nuts. Non-Boris fans should know that this band's style varies greatly from album to album, from stoner-doom to drone to ... whatever, and you'll here some of their various styles; make sure to check out "Farewell", the epic, shoegazing opener, and "Woman on the Screen". And that's not even getting to the second half of the album. The sound on this album is amazing - just the perfect level of under-production to make the songs rock that much harder. It doesn't matter if you don't speak Japanese - I still kinda sing along anyway. You have got to hear this. Fuck this record rules.

Good Music

I'm gonna admit that some of the music I've been posting lately, while good, isn't necessarily my favorite music. Most of it's pretty good though, so I put it up and let you be the judge.

However, with Christmas/Hanukkah/Atheist Holiday fast approaching, I'm gonna only post music that I really like. I'll be pretty busy with projects/tests but I'll still put up some good stuff, some very good stuff...soon.

till then...

The Dirty Projectors - Rise Above

Big-upped by pitchfork recently, this is a truly an interesting record. This is a song-by-song re-imagining of Black Flag's Damaged... but it doesn't sound a THING like Black Flag. It shares some lyrics, and that's about it. This record is filled with beautiful and very original songs; the vocals are a standout and the instrumentation is fantastic, not to mention the songwriting.

Lightning Bolt - Wonderful Rainbow

More awesome noise-rock from this awesome duo. Wonderful Rainbow rocks a little harder than Ride the Skies, I'd say. Get both and decide for yourself. Excellent stuff, listen to this.

Lightning Bolt - Ride the Skies

Noise-rock that kicks a lot of ass. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to hear intelligent, instrumental, loud rock music.

The Black Lips - Good Bad Not Evil

The current rulers of garage rock. They're coming to Denver in February too (yay). This record lacks some of the energy of their live album, Los Valientes del Mundo but the record definitely benefits from studio production. Great songs, I enjoyed this record. And i will very much enjoy seeing them live in Feb.

Spoon - Gimme Fiction

The 2005 release from this consistently good group. It's what you'd expect from a Spoon record - catchy and well-written pop songs. Lots of different classic pop influences make this a diverse and enjoyable listen. You want this if u haven't got it already. Yes, yes you do.

Joanna Newsom - Ys

Joanna Newsom is a singer/songwriter who plays the harp and has been making the indie crowd orgasm all over themselves for a few years now. Her 2006 album Ys took me a little while to get into but once I did, I listened to it non-stop. The songs are long and epic, with orchestra arrangements backing Newsom on most of the album. It took me forever to get past the amazing first track, "Emily". Her singing style is quite unique, sounds a bit like Bjork. There really isn't a whole lot out there like this - when's the last time you listened to a harpist? Super highly recommended .

Black Mountain - Stormy High

An out of print 7-inch that came out sometime last year with two songs on it. I only just discovered it, and it will have to suffice until the band releases their sophomore album in January (finally!)

Voices

Jens Lekman - Oh You're So Silent Jens

Jens Lekman's 2005 release, a collection of several non-album tracks from various EPs. The singer/songwriter writes instantly-likable pop tunes and sings in a baritone that gets compared a lot to Stephin Merrit. Beautiful songs. Also make sure to get his newest album that came out this year, Night Falls Over Kortadela.

Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock and Roll

They are supporting the Hold Steady tonight at the Fox. An appropriate pairing, considering the speak-singing that both bands specialize in. This is Art Brut's debut. A fun garage/punk record, but what makes it unique is Eddie Argos' aforementioned speak-sing vocals. That style might not be for everyone but it's worth a listen.

Ghostface Killah - Fishscale

The album that got me into Ghostface. You can easily get hooked by the catchier songs like "Back Like That" and "The Champ" but there are so many good songs on here. Highly recommended. And I'm gonna see him at the Ogden on Thursday, oh yes.

Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientele

From the Wu-Tang Clan came many good solo projects. Ghostface is one of them, and his delivery on this album (and in anything he's involved with) is one that keeps you hanging on to his every word; it's both intense and naturally eloquent at the same time. Possibly my favorite rapper. Don't miss this.

Broken Social Scene Present: Kevin Drew - Spirit If...

Sorry i forgot to up this earlier, didn't even realize the concert was tonight. But yeah, just got my ticket. WOot.

Anyways, this is the first solo record in the "Broken Social Scene Presents" series to come out of the massive collective that is Broken Social Scene. This record is the work of one guy (Drew) with the backing of BSS, as well as many, many other guests. It sounds very much like a BSS album. Quite a good album, even if it doesn't quite stand up to the two BSS albums. Seeing them tonight is gonna be SWEEEET.
