Battle of the Scrolls Goes to Court

It looks like what seemed to be some silly "lawyers being lawyers" has turned into a full fledged serious matter. Bethesda is suing Mojang over the title of their new game still in production Scrolls; the issue being of course that they are the keepers of The Elder Scrolls series of games, including the upcomming Skyrim. Notch seems to have been nothing but jolly over the whole thing, several times giving Bethesda the benefit of the doubt, and even challenging them to a deathmatch at quake 3 to settle the issue. Bethesda on the other hand seems to be taking the issue very seriously, ignoring the light hearted attempts to diffuse the situation and pressing forward with their lawsuit.

To me this seems like a ridiculous non-issue; I doubt anyone would confuse the the simple collectable card strategy game with the upcoming epic RPG from Bethesda. Even if that could potentially be a risk, at least ninety percent of the time that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is referred to, it is as the shortened 'Skyrim'. This makes Bethesda look like a greedy bully on the playground; attacking Mojang and the very likeable Notch seems like a horrible PR move. Heck, if Skyrim didn't look so amazing I might consider canceling my pre-order just to send a message that being over litigious and picking on a great indie developer isn't cool.

What do you guys think? Does Bethesda have a legitimate claim here? Or do you think they are just hurting themselves going after Mojang for something that wouldn't even be an issue?

Epic Bosses Featured In Dark Souls Bosses Destroy Trailer
- 3 Comments
Ok guys, I have good news and bad news. The bad news is I'm not going to be able to get any pre-release impressions up of Dark Souls because I don't have a copy, so you'll have to try to trust those "other guys". The good news is it'll give me a little bit of time to keep cranking through Demon's Souls! Level 41 Magician FTW.

If you don't want to have any of the bosses in Dark Souls spoiled for you then you may want to avoid the new trailer below.

Anno 2070 Factions Trailer Released
The latest Anno 2070 trailer breaks down the two factions featured in the game a little bit more. The Tycoons are all about productivity using proven technology, at the expense of polluting the environment. The Ecos are more mindful of the environment, but are not as efficient.

Guild Wars 2 Heading To Closed Beta This Year
- 11 Comments
During Eurogamer Expo, Eurogamer.net confirmed with Guild Wars 2 lead content designer, Colin Johanson, that GW2 will go into closed beta by the end of this year for sure. As they begin to go through the beta process they'll get a better idea of when the game will release.

"If we tear through the beta and everything's super positive then obviously it'll come out faster. And if we go into the beta process and we see things we want to change, then we have the luxury of having the time to be able to sit down and fix that stuff.

"We really don't know when release is going to be, because we want time to react to things and upgrade and everything."

Johanson said "we don't know yet" how people will be informed of the open beta. "How we're going to announce it and how to get into it - we haven't decided that yet either," he added.

Skyrim Voice Cast Announced
Bethesda has announced the voice cast behind The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Skyrim will feature an ensemble cast of Academy Award nominees, including Christopher Plummer (“The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo”, “The Insider”), Max Von Sydow (“The Exorcist,” “Minority Report”), and Joan Allen (“The Contender,” “The Bourne Ultimatum”), and Lynda Carter (Wonder Woman!).

Christopher Plummer, a two-time Emmy Award winner, two-time Tony Award winner and Academy Award nominee, takes on the role of Arngeir, a powerful Greybeard elder. An order of philosopher monks who are masters of the Way of the Voice, the Greybeards live in silent isolation atop Skyrim’s largest mountain.

Academy Award nominee, Max Von Sydow, stars as Esbern, a chronicler and agent of the Blades who has survived in hiding. Long obsessed with the foretold return of the dragon Alduin, the World Eater, Esbern will teach you how to confront this epic evil.

Tony Award winner and three-time Academy Award nominee, Joan Allen, will be making her videogame debut as Delphine, one of the last remaining members of the Blades – an ancient warrior society once sworn to protect the Emperor. Like you, Delphine is trying to unravel the mystery of the dragons’ return.

In addition, iconic actress and singer, Lynda Carter (“Wonder Woman”), voices Gormlaith Golden-Hilt, one of the Nord heroes who overthrew the dragons in ancient times.

Skyrim’s cast also includes

  • Michael Hogan (“Battlestar Galactica”), who plays Imperial General Tullius, in charge of crushing the Stormcloak rebellion.
  • Vladimir Kulich (“The 13th Warrior,” “Smoking Aces”) portrays Hogan’s nemesis Ulfric Stormcloak, Jarl of Windhelm and charismatic leader of the Stormcloaks, who aims to make Skyrim independent of the Empire.
  • Claudia Christian (“Babylon 5”) joins the cast as Legate Rikke, General Tullius’s chief lieutenant, a loyal Imperial officer as well as a Nord who firmly believes Skyrim must remain part of the Empire.
  • Diane Louise Salinger (“Carnivale”), Renee Victor (“Weeds”), and Saturday Night Live-alum George Coe (“Transformers: Dark of the Moon”) round out the star-studded cast of more than 70 different voice actors delivering over 60,000 lines of dialogue.

Dead Island Coming To A Theatre Near You
Lionsgate has optioned the film rights for Deep Silver's Dead Island. The film "Dead Island" is currently in early development. Sean Daniel (The Mummy, Tombstone, Dazed and Confused) will spearhead the project in cooperation with producer Stefan Sonnenfeld. Directors will include J.J. Abrams, Michael Bay and Gore Verbinski. Jason Brown of The Sean Daniel Company and Missy Papageorge for Sonnenfeld’s Sunny Field Productions are executive producing, with Sarah Perlman of Sunny Field Productions serving as co-producer.

The first Dead Island CG trailer (which received a shit ton and a half of kudos) will be the primary creative inspiration for the film because of its focus on human emotion, family ties and non-linear storytelling. Said Drake of the property’s acquisition, “Like the hundreds of journalists and millions of fans who were so passionate and vocal about the Dead Island trailer, we too were awestruck.” He continued, “This is exactly the type of property we’re looking to adapt at Lionsgate – it’s sophisticated, edgy, and a true elevation of a genre that we know and love. It also has built in brand recognition around the world, and franchise potential.”

The game centers on vacationers whose island paradise becomes a living hell when a zombie outbreak quickly spreads. Cut off from the rest of the world, the survivors have only the available materials and the island’s natural “weapons” to protect themselves from the viscous and growing legions of the undead. In addition to the award-winning trailer and video game, the Dead Island intellectual property will be simultaneously developed by Deep Silver into forthcoming graphic novels, novels and other extensions.

Technical Advantages Of The PC Version Of Batman Arkham City Detailed
- 9 Comments
www.pcgameshardware.com has posted an interview with Ben Wyatt, Technical Director at Rocksteady Studios, regarding the PC version of Batman Arkham City. The PC version comes out a little while after the console versions, but it will be optimized to be super pretty. This is to say that there will be DX11 and PhysX support. The interview goes into a lot of technical details, so give it a read if you are interested in what DX11 tessellation means for Batman. Alternatively, you can look at some of these lovely gallery shots.

Modern Warfare 3 PC Interview @ Gamespy
Gamespy published an interview with Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling concerning the PC version of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3. Here is a brief synopsis of what PC gamers can expect:

  • There will be dedicated servers in addition to an improved version of Modern Warfare 2's matchmaking system.
  • The server browser will be ping based.
  • Some vague work has been done to prevent rampant cheating. Also, post launch, a dedicated team will be tasked with monitoring cheating (and, presumably, doing something about it).
  • The minimum system requirements will be slightly higher than Modern Warfare 2, but no further details were given.
  • Mod support is still up in the air.

Also, Bowling really liked the Galactic Warfare Mod for Call of Duty 4.

I think that pretty much covers it, but feel free to check out the Gamespy version if you are in to the whole reading thing.

Distant Worlds- Legends Announcement Coupled With An Alien Creation Contest
- 1 Comment
I’m not familiar with the Distant Worlds series of Space Strategy games, but the recent announcement of the imminent Distant Worlds – Legends expansion was coupled with a contest to design a new space creature for the series. The winner gets their creature included in the expansion, plus credit for their work, and a free copy of Distant Worlds and both of its expansions. If any of you have a talent for concocting Alien monstrosities, then please enter the contest. Or at least post some of your wild ideas in the comments for my own personal amusement.

First Trailer Released For The Repopulation
- 2 Comments
We’ve just received word about the release of a trailer for the upcoming SCI-FI MMORPG The Repopulation. In addition to the usual MMORPG tomfoolery, The Repopulation will include city building elements as well. While the trailer isn’t very clear about the basic concept of the setting, the press release suggests that two rival superpowers eye each other wearily across a depopulated world. Players can join with these existing nations or form their own rouge nations, which can build cities, go to war with each other, etc. The Repopulation is apparently financed by a core team of four men whose day jobs subsidize their dreams of MMORPG greatness.

Read on for the trailer and a list of The Repopulation's ambitious key features.

In-House: Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Interview
- 0 Comments
Our weekend editor Rose Wolfe was lucky enough to attend the Eurogamer Expo this year, although only on the very last day. Since Rose is a bit of a Counter-Strike fan, she made sure to steal some time away from Valve's Chet Faliszek to talk about the company's upcoming FPS reboot Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Thanks to the help of some of our readers she came armed with some tough questions, which Chet took like a champ.

If CS:GO is on your radar at all you'll definitely want to check out the full interview with Chet by clicking through the image below.

Notes From The Bunker
¡Buenos días compañeros!

After my recent Tropico 4 Review, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about excellent El Presidentes of the past. One particularly talented individual was António de Oliveira Salazar, who ran Portugal from 1932 until 1968. While he leaned a towards fascism, he had the good sense to collaborate with the Allies during the Second World War, which was a better policy than in my Hearts of Iron II game where I lead the Portuguese conquest of Spain and subsequently joined the Axis. This experiment ended with Lisbon being nuked multiple times by the Americans while Germany conquered the USSR and Great Britain. As for the real Salazar, Life Magazine called him "the world's best dictator," and added that "he is also the greatest Portuguese since Prince Henry the Navigator." His regime co-founded the United Nations and NATO, despite the whole fascism thing. Salazar's security forces even murdered the opposition candidate who seemed to be the actual winner of the fraudulent elections of 1958. I do the same thing whenever I play Tropico 4! You really can’t get more El Presidente than that, can you?

On that note, João Leitã, one of our readers, has shared a delightful video that he made that includes an appearance by Presidente Salazar. Its premise is that fascist Portugal had an equivalent to the campy Batman TV series of the 1960s. Watch below for the video and be sure to click on the little cc icon if you’d like English language subtitles.

Diablo III Items Information Blowout

If you're still wallowing in anguish waiting to get into the Diablo III beta, you can head over to the Community Portal and check out the fully fleshed out items section. It includes full info on (what looks like) all items, rares, legendaries, sets, crafting items, gems, runestones, jewlery, dyes, etc. - all subject to change of course. One interesting tidbit I gleaned from browsing that I hadn't realized before: the game doesn't end after Hell difficulty. Maybe I missed a press release somewhere, but it looks like there will be an additional Inferno difficulty for those who are truly masochistic.

EA and BioWare have announced today's opening of their new state-of-the-art customer service center in Galway, Ireland. The new digs will provide 24/7 support for Star Wars: The Old Republic. As announced over the weekend, SW:ToR will launch on December 20th in North America, and December 22nd in Europe. BioWare Ireland is now recruiting 200 jobs in preparation for the game's launch. Who else is going to crank call support just to hear some SEXXXY Irish accents?

“MMO launches are complex, and we are determined to set a new standard for a high quality, stable, smooth launch for our fans. Our new BioWare facility and team in Galway is critical to ensuring we deliver on that goal,” said Dr. Ray Muzyka, EA Senior Vice President and General Manager of the BioWare Label.

Added Dr. Greg Zeschuk, EA Vice President and General Manager of the BioWare MMO Business Unit, “It’s exciting to bring the Galway community into the BioWare family in support of this high-priority launch. This project wouldn’t have been possible without the strong support from the Irish government and the strong local mix of technology infrastructure and recruitment opportunities.”

Job Postings Lead To New Alan Wake Speculation
- 14 Comments
Eurogamer is on about some recently expired job postings at Remedy which hint at what might be Alan Wake 2. Four out of the five open positions note a "AAA console project"; the fifth job posting, for a Game Programmer, was for iOS & Android, PC and Consoles. One position specifically referenced Alan Wake.

"You will be working on the next iteration of Remedy's unique world-class rendering engine that was previously used in Alan Wake," outlined the vacancy for a 3D graphics programmer.

This past May, Remedy told Eurogamer that more Alan Wake is coming; but that it would not be Alan Wake 2 or a DLC.

Nuclear Dawn Release Imminent

Jade Empire May Get A Sequel
According to Eurogamer, BioWare cofounders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk suggested that a sequel to Jade Empire might see the light of day. You can take Eurogamer’s word on this, as the following quotes come from the duo’s appearance at the Eurogamer 2011 Expo.
"We've been talking a lot about that actually on and off over the years," said Ray Muzyka, BioWare CEO.

"It's an IP, it's a setting that we're really passionate about, and we still are. Both Greg and I were big believers in the IP.

"We're just looking for the right way to deploy it."

"We have a lot of different projects now on a lot of different platforms, and you might see some of that [Jade Empire] in the future. You never know.

"We don't have anything to announce on it right now," Muzyka added, "but it is a franchise that's near and dear to us."

My wife has been waiting to hear this for about five years. She groggily told me that she wants this to happen, and she wants it released simultaneously on PC and consoles, but without the bugs that plagued the PC version. I enjoyed Jade Empire’s unique setting as well, but I found the PC port to be frustrating. Here’s hoping that Jade Empire 2 stays true to its roots, and you can get into a threesome.

Update On Fallout MMO Lawsuit(s)
It’s been awhile since we heard any news about the Fallout MMO Lawsuit. Since our last update, Bethesda filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Masthead Studios, the Bulgarian company developing the Fallout MMO for Interplay. Bethesda’s application for a temporary restraining order against Masthead was denied by the Hon. John F. Walter. Of course, this whole sordid saga isn’t over quite yet. We’ll do our best to keep you updated.

Thanks to Milord A. Keshishian for the bringing this to our attention.

EA's New EULA Requires Users To "Waive The Right To A Trial By Jury"

Doubtlessly, the next revision to their EULA will require users to agree to quarter soldiers in their homes before they can play Mass Effect 3. Thanks to Boba3388 for bringing this to our attention.

The Morning Juberish
Dear l33t h4x0r(s) of mine,

I'm not sure when our relationship first started. Were you the one who logged into my Facebook account? Was it you who drained my meager bank account via PayPal? Or were you just the one who logged into my Xbox account yesterday and ordered up a hundred bucks worth of MS points on my credit card?

Thank you! It was so incredibly kind of you to point out my security flaws. I should know better. In fact, I do know better. It's really just laziness, and that is inexcusable. You really could have done so much worse. You clearly had nothing to gain since I have nothing! But you still took the time to teach me a valuable lesson, and to top it off you were kind enough to put those 6000 MS points into my XBLA account.

Thank you for looking out for me and teaching me the error of my ways.

Love,
Jube

Here's a little something for Dexter fans.
