IPL3: Origins Announced, Detailed

Following on the success of their two previous tournaments, the IGN Pro League recently announced and detailed their plans for the next - and, this time, it's going to be live.

Currently known "IPL3: Origins", the event will be held from October 6th to October 9th. It is to take place in Atlantic City, New Jersey, at Caesar's Palace . Players and spectators alike have been encouraged to attend, and the IPL has also offered staffing positions to those interested and able. While invitations have been extended to prominent players in the StarCraft II competitive scene, aspiring and lesser-known players, too, are still able to attend and participate. Currently, the prize pool is reportedly set to some $100k (US).

Information on purchasing passes and travel packages, as well as more general details regarding the event, can be viewed at the IPL site. Sources indicate that those that do not attend the event will still be able to spectate via broadcast, as has been the case for the previous two tournaments.

IPL3 will be held in but a month's time. Will you be attending?

IPL Season Two Underway

In but a matter of two weeks, the IGN Pro League's first season took us through a series of matches between some of the best players in the North American region. With the contestants all bringing in their own playing methods, philosophies, tactics, and strategies, battles were often tense and decisive - punctuated by both the commentary of designated 'casters', as well as that of the viewing audience at large. While only one player would ultimately come out on top of the IPL's "Best of the West" Tournament as the victor, it would seem as though the IPL had no plans to stop there.

In fact, it would seem as though plans for an IPL Season Two are already well underway. This time, the player roster seems to have doubled, now looking to include some thirty-two players (as opposed to the original sixteen). So, too, does the prize pool appear to have expanded tenfold, from a reported $5k to $50k (US).

Unlike the first season, however -- which was an 'invitational' tournament -- this time around, the IPL will be holding 'open qualifiers' for players. While many high-profile names may be expected to appear, this will also give other aspiring players a chance to compete and showcase their talents. So, too, will be the case for aspiring casters, who are also being given the opportunity to participate and demonstrate.

Should readers feel they are either of those things, they are encouraged to apply.

The Open Qualifiers will begin on Saturday, May 7th, and will be held on a series of dates from there on forth. Broadcasts of these matches will start on Thursday, May 12, and can be viewed from the IPL site.

For more information regarding the specific scheduling, as well as how to participate...

Players, see here.

Missile Movers Tutorial Explores Presentation-Altering Map-Making Tools

Acolyte - 0 Comments
There's a big new tutorial out there for aspiring and established StarCraft II map-makers alike from Blizzard Entertainment itself, exploring the complex options for customizing the behavior and presentation of various objects in the game.

The Missile Movers tutorial covers how to alter the flight path of missiles in a variety of ways both visual and underlying mechanical, but the tools are also useful for modifying animations like Reaper jump movement and Spine Crawler attacks.
Giving missiles short "charge up" animations

For instance, the Yamato Cannon appears to draw energy together before firing. The best way to do something like this is to give a guided missile phase 0 speed and acceleration, but a timeout of the desired animation duration.

Preventing perpetually looping missiles

This happens when a missile does not have a sufficient turn rate to ever arrive at a static target. It can occur when a target moves at the last moment and then either dies or becomes stationary, such that it is just inside the missile's ability to turn towards it. The way around this is to give a missile a "terminator phase", which is a guidance phase with a MAX Orientation. This enables the missile to turn on a dime, which makes it impossible to escape.

Introducing the IGN Pro League

Hell, it's about time - the site for the IGN Pro League has gone live! The IPL itself is an invitational tournament for North American players, about to hold its first season. It will consist of sixteen contestants from a number of different 'clans' across the region. The current prize pool seems set at some $5,000, with the additional opportunity for a select few players to automatically qualify for the following season as well.
The goal of the IPL is to bring a professional, polished viewing experience to fans of eSports, as well as supporting the development of eSports both nationally and internationally through a sustainable tournament system that rewards those who play in it.

As the top gaming site on the internet, IGN is passionate about nurturing the gaming scene. We believe that the main reason why America is not yet competitive in the eSports scene is the lack of events and sponsorships to support America's talent. IGN will be investing in accelerating the growth of the eSport scene in America.
Now the players assemble.
