More soundies: thefilmarchived.blogspot.com The Hut-Sut Song (a Swedish Serenade) is a novelty song from the 1940s with nonsense lyrics. The song was written in 1941 by Leo V. Killion, Ted McMichael and Jack Owens. The first and most popular recording was by Horace Heidt and His Musical Knights. The lyrics state that a Swedish boy skipped school to sit by a stream and sing what is purportedly a Swedish folk song. The chorus goes in part: Hut-Sut Rawlson on the rillerah and a brawla, brawla sooit. The song then purports to define some of the words, a boy and a girl by a river and their dreams. The song has an unusual and contagious rhythm. The song was also recorded by various artists such as Mel Torme, Freddy Martin and Spike Jones. The song is of the same genre as other novelty songs of the era, such as Mairzy Doats and Three Little Fishies (Itty Bitty Poo). Some contend that the song was a rewriting of an unpublished Missouri River song called Hot Shot Dawson. The popularity of the song is lampooned in a 1940s film short. In the film, the King's Men (who also performed on Fibber McGee and Molly), play young men living in a boarding house who are endlessly singing the song while getting dressed, eating dinner, playing cards, etc., until the exasperated proprietor finally has them removed to an insane asylum. Maxine Sullivan - When Your Lover Has Gone, 1942
Maxine Sullivan (b. Marietta Williams in 1911, Homestead, Pennsylvania - d. 1987, New York City) enjoyed great success as a vocalist in the swing era and then later as a pre-rock pop singer. Her first hit was in 1937 with the song Loch Lomond. In 1940 Maxine co-hosted a nation-wide radio program called Flow Gently Sweet Rhythm. At the time it was the only coast-to-coast radio show that featured African-American performers as the MCs. After some acting, Maxine became a nurse in 1953. Five years later she returned to music, singing and playing flugelhorn and trombone. Einar Aaron Swan (Eino William Swan) was born in Massachusetts, USA in 1903 to the Finnish immigrant family, died in Greenwood Lake, New York, USA in 1940. He was a composer, arranger and a sax player, best kown as an autor of the international evergreen „When Your Lover Has Gone" (1931). This historic broadcast from February 12, 1940, marked the Man of Steel's first appearance in a non-print medium (although a speaking role for the character would have to wait until the second episode). Along with the complete sound from the radio broadcast (minus some slight audio dropouts), this video provides brief glimpses of the actors who played Jor-El and Lara in the serial chapter "Superman Comes to Earth" (1948) and in the TV episode "Superman on Earth" (1952). This radio program, like most radio shows of the era, is in the public domain. Clayton "Bud" Collyer first portrayed the Man of Steel in this second episode of the Adventures of Superman radio series, broadcast on February 14, 1940. The episode ("Clark Kent, Reporter") was the first of a serial involving a villain known as "The Wolf." The episode's opening narration is most likely the only version of the Superman legend in which Kal-El grows to adulthood while the rocket travels from Krypton to Earth. He adopts the name Clark Kent at the suggestion of a stranger and is hired as a newspaper reporter by Perry White (voice of Julian Noa). This radio program, like most radio shows of the era, is in the public domain. As with the previous episode, there are some occasional audio dropouts.

From Wikipedia: Constance Boswell (December 3, 1907 - October 11, 1976) was an American female vocalist born in Kansas City, Missouri but raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. With her sisters, Martha and Helvetia "Vet" Boswell, she performed in the 1930's as The Boswell Sisters and became a highly influential singing group during this period via recordings and radio. Connee (or Connie) herself is widely considered one of the greatest jazz female vocalists and was a major influence on Ella Fitzgerald. In 1936, all the sisters got married, and Vet and Martha retired. Connie, on the other hand, even though she cut solo albums while with the group, directed her entire focus on her solo career. This collection represents some of her guest appearances in various old time radio shows including Bing Crosby, Command Performance, Good News, Kraft Music Hall, Mail Call, and Screen Guild Theater. Recently, the staff of Radio Station WWRB and its parent company, Airline Transport Communications Inc. put together a model four course radio range, operated by control operators WA4SZE and KF4MVG. The original four course ranges were very large because they operated in the very low frequency range, requiring 200 foot high towers with wide spacing. This model system operates in the high frequency 28 MHz band, so it is much smaller. Despite the size difference, it is functionally identical to its 1930s-1970s forebears. We'll be setting up a web page on the four course range soon with construction plans, photographs, history, and schematics for amateur radio operators to build their own ranges. THEATER HISTORY: For The Blowing Rock Stage Company's 10th Anniversary Season in 1995, Founder Mark Wilson mounted the only reprise ever of a show in his twelve-year production history. This classic 1940's musical was the first fully staged "book musical" for the developing company in the second year of professional summer theatre in Blowing Rock, NC. When produced as the season finale for 1987, the original Radio Hour featured many of the actors who had banded together that second season to build an audience that felt they were a part of those performers' world. The show symbolized that company/community relationship, and in commemoration eight years later, once again concluded the season. In that celebratory spirit, this 15 year-old VHS has been restored and edited for archival, educational and documentary purpose. "LSD"...what? There really WAS a cranky old man that lived in a townhome on the corner across from the Sunset Drive theater - yes, HE said it - AND he harassed the town's newspaper editor, a restaurant, Mark and his staff, videotaping the young techs as they tiptoed 300 lb set pieces into the auditorium at 3am in the rain, trying to catch them violating the town noise ordinance (NO sound after 10pm!) The company truck's squeaky springs did that. The town cop attempted to ticket Producer Mark, but Mark smiled, saying "legally that should go to the Board President, and you know where he lives." So Editor Jerry Burns got a ticket at 4am. Same morning - 9am, it <b>...</b>

Ginny Simms - Perfidia (Alberto Domínguez), Conqueror ca 1940 (USA) NOTE: Ginny SIMMS (1915, San Antonio - 1994, Palm Springs) was an American big band singer and film actress. She appeared in 11 movies from 1939 to 1951, when she retired. She was married three times, to Hyatt Hotels founder Hyatt von Dehn from 1945 to 1951, to Bob Calhoun from 1951 to 1952, and Don Eastvold from 1962 until her death. She originally considered studying to become a concert pianist, but enrolled instead at Fresno State Teachers College. While there, she began performing in campus productions and singing in a campus vocal trio. Shortly afterwards, in 1932, she became band vocalist for the Tom Gerun band in San Francisco. In 1938 she joined the Kay Kyser Orchestra and a year later she made her first movie with Kyser and Lucille Ball, "That's Right Youre Wrong". Ginny nearly married Kyser but instead she left his orchestra in 1941 to do her own radio show. She starred in the movies "Here We Go Again" with Edgar Bergen (1942), "Hit the Ice" with Abbott & Costello (1943), "Broadway Rhythm" with George Murphy (1944), and Cole Porters "Night and Day" (1946) with Cary Grant . "Perfidia" was composed by Mexican composer Alberto Domínguez and made famous by Xavier Cugat's recording in 1939.

The 1946 British film "Stairway to Heaven" (British title: "A Matter of Life or Death") was made to rejuvenate Anglo-American friendship by reminding Americans of the World War II alliance. Britain was trying to obtain US foreign aid to rebuild after suffering substantial wartime damage. The film was made before the Marshall Plan came along to provide such aid. In the 1940s, many Americans still viewed Britain suspiciously as imperialistic and the center of world financial domination. The film is a fantasy characteristic of the period. Scenes on Earth are in color; scenes in Heaven are in black and white. The jury selection scene here points to British interest in American population diversity. Although the US had severely limited immigration in the 1920s, there was a substantial immigrant and second-generation population. In contrast, in Britain in the 1940s, there was a much more homogeneous population and immigrants - to the extent there were immigrants - were largely from Ireland. It originally appeared on the Sonny Sharrock Band's "Live In New York" album. The players are Sonny Sharrock (guitar), Melvin Gibbs (bass), Dave Snyder (keyboards), Pheroan akLaff and Abe Speller (drums). She had a strong but warm voice and interpreted lyrics sensitively. Early in her career she sang on Radio as "Bonnie Blue", The Blue Lady and sang with her brother's band in Washington DC She rose fast after joining Artie Shaw late in the summer of 1938 and then Benny Goodman in December 1939 after Shaw abruptly quit. In August 1941 she sang for Harry James and recorded such hits as "I Don't want to Walk Without You", "I Had the Craziest Dream", and "I've heard that Song Before."
