Singapore pens Asia's longest poem

A record-breaking poem brings Singaporeans together to celebrate life and literature
She loves me, she loves me not ... even the most simplistic of verse will help contribute to "The World, A Giant Poem."

The numbers speak for themselves: 1,000 participants, 150 poems, 20 languages and various poetic styles.

Singapore penned the longest poem in Asia over the weekend, reaching a record length of 170 meters as part of the "Singapore, A Giant Poem" project.

Poets huddled together along the Singapore River to scribble their verses. Topics included voicing inner thoughts, paying tribute to the Lion City, and of course, love.

“This is a great opportunity for me to share Chinese children’s poems with the masses," said Tan Hock Gee, a Singaporean Chinese poet and educator. "There is much wisdom in poems, even simple ones that everyone can learn from and identify with.”

The worldwide poetry project, which started in Spain, is dubbed "The World, A Giant Poem." The project is the brainchild of Spanish anthropologist and artist, Ángel Arenas, and supported by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

"We would like to thank everyone for their contribution to this project," said Arena. “What was created along the Singapore River was a wonderful giant poem with words, poetry, dialogue and emotion, and we have received feedback to repeat this project in Singapore again, as well as in other cities.”

The giant poem will be on display at The Arts House till end November.
