NEW MUSIC: Q-Burns Abstract Message – Innocent (Presslaboys Remixes)

•September 23, 2011 • Leave a Comment

We had Cole Medina’s remix of QBAM’s “Innocent” at the turn of the year. This was a remix of a much earlier track. Surprisingly, an Italian duo Presslaboys have now also had a go. Is this excessive?

The Cole Medina mixes were more towards the soulful house end of things. The Presslaboys give the main – Delinquent – mix a big room house feel, which is a welcome move away from soul. But the dub mix is the one to go for. It toughens the track up but simulataneously retains smoothness. Overall, the dub mix is a welcome addition.

Blurb: After the release of Cole Medina’s well-received remixes of “Innocent,” Eighth Dimension and Q-Burns Abstract Message believed all versions of this classic tune had been tapped. Suddenly, out of nowhere, Italian DJ duo Presslaboys have taken everyone by surprise with a new pair of stunning “Innocent” versions. It seems that Presslaboys had prodded the remix parts from the hands of Q-Burns Abstract Message in an unguarded moment, stealthily concocting their version over a few months in their secret Presslab Records studio. Fellow Italian DJ Gianluca Peruzzi joined Presslaboys on the main mix which fuses the gorgeous vocals of Lisa Shaw to a wholly original music accompaniment. The music swells and rises above notably solid club rhythms delivering a house music potion suitable for consuming in big rooms and late, late nights. The dub pares down Lisa’s vocal and accentuates the shimmering music-scape as some seriously tough house beats point the way to the dance floor. All of this adds up to a nice surprise from Eighth Dimension,Q-Burns Abstract Message, and Presslaboys to close out the summer while warming up select DJ sets.

NEW MUSIC: Midnight Conspiracy – Discord (DIGIRAATII Remix)

•September 23, 2011 • Leave a Comment

Digiraatii are back with their excessive vowels and a new remix. Last time, it was a remix of Kids At The Bar (here). This time it’s a remix of Midnight Conspiracy. This claims to be that awkward hybrid drumstep. Rankadank Records are the ones who usually get this right. Discord is the right name for this track. This is dnb elements, with some aggressive dubstep bass and electro screeches. Interesting but not something I’d buy.

OUT SEPT 27 on Killpop Records (will be available on Beatport, iTunes, ect)

REPOST: TORI AMOS / CARL CRAIG

•September 23, 2011 • Leave a Comment

I had a request to repost the Accapella or CJ Bolland mixes of Tori Amos’ God track. Don’t have either on hdd after a purge, so this will have to do. If anyone else downloaded either of the other versions from the previous posts, please send them my way and I’ll re-up. Usual address: acidtedblog[at]googlemail.com. Thanks.

The ever reliable Detroit don Carl Craig remixes the equally wonderful Tori Amos from 1993 single ‘God’. I didn’t think I’d posted this mix before. But it turns out I have (see here). Never mind. Enjoy a rather slow mix by Carl and the contrast of the restrained beats with Tori’s wonderful vocals. A discogs reviewer says: “In his “Thinking Mix 2,” he keeps the vocals intact, but both mixes opt more for minimalism, rather than full sounds. While the mixes overall don’t reach heaven, you can still dance in purgatory.”

NEW MUSIC: CONVERGE+ – PRANA / AQUA

•September 22, 2011 • Leave a Comment

Something new by way of deep house on Eighth Dimension Records from Japanese duo Converge+.

Prana has backward rhythms and a deep underlying bass in its deep house approach. But a bit forgettable. Joshua Iz remixes it in a more spritely fashion. But not with stronger results. Aqua has a slightly more laid back approach. More on the mark of the hypnotic end of deep house. Funk Shuei give it the remix and go for something classically early 90s in a Chicago manner. Works really well. Listen to Prana, buy Aqua.

Blurb: Eighth Dimension’s Blue Label Series, curated by Q-Burns Abstract Message, deftly presents its third issue, this time featuring Japanese house/techno duo Converge+. Their tracks fell into the label’s lap via unsolicited demo (often the most nefarious kind) and the Eighth Dimension team were immediately enraptured by Converge+’s sleek and futuristic house music sound. Converge+ are comprised of two seasoned DJs, Takashi Sasaki and DJ ENDO, who create spacious and warm house music tracks with subtle flavors of delicious, deep techno. First off there’s “Prana,” a flowing deep house track filled with synthesized swells and digital sighs, all laid on top of a funkily synchronized rhythm. Joshua Iz immediately came to mind as “Prana”‘s remix applicator, and he took a quick break from busy dealings with his own Vizual Records imprint to deliver the stylish version heard here. It’s a classic Joshua Iz production complete with his trademark combination of hypno-beats, layered key stabs, and bass line bounce. Ten satisfying minutes of digital disco fury. Converge+’s second cut, “Aqua,” is a melody-treated electronic groover recalling the early days of deep house such as found on the renowned Balance label. Bell-like patterns resonate on top as lush, filtered pads and a rolling low end round out the sonic sphere. On the remix tip Eighth Dimension looked south of the border and to its Mexican friends in Funk Shuei, proprietors of the quickly rising Dialtone label. Their rework takes a sharp left turn from the original “Aqua,” using inspiration from the rhythm to elicit a punchy after-hours house treatment that’s slightly stripped back and driven by a Chicago shuffle. A subtle female voice enters the zone and the repetitious bell sounds take on a more ominous overtone.

NEW MUSIC: FRANK OCEAN – NOVOCAINE (ATOM CHRISTIE REMIX)

•September 22, 2011 • Leave a Comment

You might remember we had Atom Christie’s assault on Adele back here. This time a fairly straight remix of Frank Ocean (no idea) and his track Novocaine. This is dubstep rnb. This one is … speak it softly … radio friendly. And that’s notwithstanding teddy.

ASHLEY BEEDLE – REVOLUTIONS IN DUB (SHARAM’S AKIKO DUB)

We had a track from Ashley Beedle’s 1995 release Revolutions In Dub last month. The remix was provided by Deep Dish. Here’s another track from the same release but this time provided by only half of Deep Dish.

NEW MUSIC: DJ WASH – REPULSION

•September 21, 2011 • Leave a Comment

New release on the usually reliable dnb/dubstep label Rankadank by DJ Wash. This is dnb from Hong Kong.

Repulsion is billed as a dancefloor killer. It certainly is a pretty full on dnb track. It’s a good track but slightly lacks that certain ‘something’ to make it standout from any number of other dnb tracks. Division is a different kettle of fish. This slouches in dark corners making vague threats. Nice and moody.

Blurb: Dancefloor killer DNB from Hong Kong! Wash AKA DJ Wash based in Hong Kong is a name synonymous with DnB in Asia. He not only promotes and produces but also runs the infamous podcast “Kongkast” which has seen artists such as Blu Mar Ten, Conrank, Kode9 & DC Breaks step up to the plate. Wash now releases his debut double single on Rankadank and its a stormer. Here you have the A-side from the release “Repulsion” which delivers enough energy to take down any dancefloor,.. ENJOY

VINYL BLAIR – SCRATCH N SNIFF

•September 21, 2011 • Leave a Comment

Vinyl Blair were Billy Nasty and Steve Jones (Steve Dub). They have appeared here a few times (see here). This remix was released on Hard Hands Records (Leftfield’s label) and was Vinyl Blair’s first single release (1993). This is another of those sprawling techno trance monsters. But coming at things very much from the techno side.

NEW MUSIC: Alexander Robotnick – Love Supreme (edit)

•September 20, 2011 • Leave a Comment

Something to lift the gloom. No, not the announcement of a new Fall album. Only masochists or the tone deaf would welcome that. Some lovely nu-disco from Alexander Robotnick, who appeared here a while back with the equally good JB Is Dead. A terrific jazzy groove, that sounds both 70s and new, which is odd as it’s a rew-edit of an 80s track. Even has some sax for that authentic period feel.

Blurb: In 1984 Alexander Robotnick joined Giovanotti Mondani Meccanici, an Italian multimedia-oriented group, and composed soundtracks for theatre works, videos and video-installations. For the same group – whose name was later shortened to GMM – Robotnick produced an album (‘GMM’ by Materiali Sonori) and a single. Its B side ‘Love Supreme’ rapidly became a real “cult” for many DJs and was included in a number of compilations, among which ‘Desert Island’ by Alex Patterson & Norman J. Hot Elephant Music – Robotnick’s label – has decided to make this track available on the digital market. The highlight of this track is Stefano “Cocco” Cantini, a well-known Italian Jazz musician, improvising on sax, giving the track its unique flavour and introducing dance music fans to an authentic jazz sound. This Robotnick’s work is obviously inspired by the famous track ‘A Love Supreme’ by John Coltrane.
