An observation car/carriage/coach (in US English, often abbreviated to simply observation or obs) is a type of railroad passenger car, generally operated in a passenger train as the last carriage, with windows on the rear of the car for passengers' viewing pleasure. The cars were nearly universally removed from service on American railroads beginning in the 1950s as a cost-cutting measure in order to eliminate the need to "turn" the trains when operating out of stub-end terminals.
The main spotting feature of observation cars is at the "B" end (tail) of the car; the walls of lightweight and streamlined cars usually round together to form a tapered U shape, smoothly or with a door, and larger panoramic windows were installed all around the end of the car. On older heavyweight cars, the rear end of the car consisted of an enlarged, canopied porch-like open vestibule platform area, with the door and enlarged windows set back into the car, giving wind-wing shelter from the draft. Whether old or new there was frequently a large open lounge in the B end where passengers could enjoy the view as they watched the track recede into the distance, and usually (but not always) equipped as a club car with a bar or buffet where soft drinks, cocktails and snacks could be purchased.
The California Zephyr is a passenger train operated by Amtrak between Chicago, Illinois, and Emeryville, California, via Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and California. At 2,438 miles (3,924 km) it is Amtrak's second longest route. Amtrak claims the route as one of its most scenic, with views of the upper Colorado River valley in the Rocky Mountains, and the Sierra Nevada.
Before Amtrak, the California Zephyr (the CZ, or "Silver Lady") was a passenger train operated by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy (CB&Q), Denver & Rio Grande Western (D&RGW) and Western Pacific railroads, all which dubbed it "the most talked about train in America" on March 19, 1949, with the first departure the following day. It was scheduled to pass through the most spectacular scenery on its route in the daylight. The original train ceased operation in 1970, though the D&RGW continued to operate its own passenger service, the Rio Grande Zephyr, between Salt Lake City and Denver using the original equipment until 1983. Since 1983 the California Zephyr name has been applied to the Amtrak service, which operates daily and is a hybrid of the route of the original Zephyr and its former rival, the City of San Francisco.
The Empire Builder is a passenger train operated by Amtrak in the Midwestern and Northwestern United States. It is Amtrak's busiest long-distance route, carrying more than 500,000 passengers a year in 2007–2010. Before Amtrak, the Empire Builder was the flagship train of the Great Northern Railway. The current route runs from Chicago, Illinois, to the Pacific Northwest. The line splits in Spokane, Washington, terminating at Seattle, Washington's King Street Station (2,206 miles (3,550 km) from Chicago) in the north and Portland, Oregon's Union Station (2,257 miles (3,632 km) from Chicago) in the south.
The train passes through Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon. Layovers (train service stops) are made in Saint Paul, Minot, Havre, and Spokane. Other major stops are Milwaukee; Fargo; Whitefish, Montana; and Vancouver, Washington. Railways used are BNSF Railway's northern route from Seattle to Minneapolis, Minnesota Commercial from Minneapolis to St. Paul, Canadian Pacific from St. Paul to Glenview, and Metra from Glenview to Chicago.
New York is a state in the Northeastern United States and is the United States' 27th-most extensive, fourth-most populous, and seventh-most densely populated state. New York is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south and Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east. The state has a maritime border in the Atlantic Ocean with Rhode Island, east of Long Island, as well as an international border with the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the north and Ontario to the west and north. The state of New York, with an estimated 19.8 million residents in 2015, is often referred to as New York State to distinguish it from New York City, the state's most populous city and its economic hub.
With an estimated population of nearly 8.5 million in 2014, New York City is the most populous city in the United States and the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States. The New York City Metropolitan Area is one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. New York City is a global city, exerting a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment, its fast pace defining the term New York minute. The home of the United Nations Headquarters, New York City is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world, as well as the world's most economically powerful city. New York City makes up over 40% of the population of New York State. Two-thirds of the state's population lives in the New York City Metropolitan Area, and nearly 40% live on Long Island. Both the state and New York City were named for the 17th century Duke of York, future King James II of England. The next four most populous cities in the state are Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, and Syracuse, while the state capital is Albany.
On June 1st, 2015, I got word that an original California Zephyr streamlined passenger car would be on the end of Amtrak's California Zephyr, so I went down to see the train pull into the station in Ottumwa, Iowa. The car is Chicago, Burlington & Quincy dome-observation car "Silver Solarium", built by the Budd Company in 1948. The car ran on the original California Zephyr until its discontinuance in 1970, and then operated on Amtrak as car #9252. Retired in 1981, it's now owned by Rail Journeys West, Inc., and operated by California Zephyr Railcar Charters (http://www.calzephyrrailcar.com) as part of their fleet of restored equipment chartered out for special occasions. It's configuration is just what you'd need for a private rail adventure - five sleeping compartments with showers, lounge...

This shows the upper level of an Amtrak Superliner observation car during a run of the California Zephyr between Chicago and Emeryville, California. Very nice views are afforded here. I spent the majority of my time in this car. Highly recommend Amtrak if you want to see the sights and avoid all the "necessary security" hassles of airports. I really enjoy traveling by train. I have posted multiple videos of this trip to give a sense of exactly what the scenery looks like as well as the train itself. Our train actually arrived early at Emeryville. Apparently, there has been a freight slow down in business and I think Amtrak has benefitted.

A view of the line from Sheffield Park to East Grinsted from the back of LNWR observation car built in 1913, this i filmed in real time behind 1638 SR U-Class locomotive which was operating service B on saturday 23rd of May , this gives a different view of the line which for a small fee of £1 per person each way (on top of your fare) I personally think it's well worth the train to get this outstanding view of the Bluebell Railway's line.
20 years have passed and steam has returned to Norfolk Southern's River Line. This is the full trip in the Observation Car behind Southern 630 from New Line Junction to Asheville,NC..I know it's a 2 hr long video but the scenery was just beautiful..

Back on the road and today I have suffered enough with electronic equipment failures! I also chat about how I get round my issues with road rage. I’m a British truck driver, a regional agency boy. My plan, now postponed for the foreseeable, is to leave the UK and become an O.T.R guy in Canada. This is my personal journey on my quest to achieve my dream, from the very beginning, with all the issues I now face as well. If you have any questions regarding almost anything truck related or not, please leave them in the comments below and I will create a video response specifically for you. After the success of my first bus observations, here is the second part to it! We cover quite a lot of ground around London, ranging from my local stop, to Watford General Hospital! A better variety than the previous video. Once again, I include a set of buses that are not TFL, these are operated by Arriva and First these are route 10 ( Arriva - Woodside - Hollywell Estate), and route 60 (First - Heathrow Terminal 5 - Eton Wick) as these routes are very close to a Travelcard zone station I thought I would include it in this London Bus Observations. Finally before you get to read what routes are included, some night buses are included, the majority around the Victoria area, but there are some in there, the majority at the end of the video. ROUTES INCLUDED: 38, 7, C10, EL2, 333, 159, 133, ...
