Changing The Way We Talk About Disability | Amy Oulton | TEDxBrighton
You can take a wheelchair just about anywhere. Amy addresses societal perceptions of disability and her vision for how we all change the way we approach disability. Amy has been a wheelchair user for the past ten years; she has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a rare genetic condition that causes weak tissues, joint dislocation, chronic pain and fatigue. In spite of this, Amy lives an exciting and hugely positive life, travelling the world, working as a graphic designer for a charity and campaigning to change the way society understands disability. Most recently, Amy has published for Buzzfeed on her three-month adventure around South East Asia, writing about, filming, and photo-documenting her experiences in her wheelchair.

Turning disability into ability | Liam Malone | TEDxAuckland
Paralympian gold medalist, Liam Malone believes that technological advancement and determination is the key to his success in sport and life in general. After having both legs amputated in early childhood, Liam felt like an outcast among his peers. However, with the betterment of artificial limb technology, and the advent of Running Blades, Liam found himself excelling in sporting achievement, representing New Zealand at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, and breaking records originally set by disgraced sprinter Oscar Pistorius. But what is the future of this technology? How can it be used to improve the lives of differently-abled people? And how can it be harnessed for future sporting milestones?
However, in this motivational speech, Liam does not simply credit technology for...

Disability and Child Protection | UNICEF
Stigma, ignorance, neglect, superstition and communication barriers for children with disabilities are among the social factors that explain their discrimination and isolation from society.
Subscribe to UNICEF here: http://bit.ly/1ltTE3m
Disability is a social issue -- it results from the interaction between people with "long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which, in interaction with various barriers, may hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others" (Article 1, Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability). It is not the impairment itself, but rather attitudes and environmental barriers that result in disability. Children with disabilities are often 'invisible' to service providers and they are at greater risk ...

Markus Behrendt and Christine Wagner-Behrendt from Kassel have been taking care of their son Jascha for 13 years. He broke his neck in a bicycle accident when he was five years old, and he's paralyzed and given artificial respiration ever since.
Jascha can only communicate by blinking. His family does their best to live their daily lives as normally as possible. His two sisters, ten and fifteen years old, do their parts, as well. Markus and Christine have started the Intensiv-Leben Association to support other families who care for disabled children. For their efforts, they were awarded the Bambi in the "silent heroes" category last year. We observe the family going about their daily routine. A Report by Melina Grundmann.

However, in this motivational speech, Liam does not simply credit technology for his success. He also discusses the importance of determination and ambition to achieve one's goals. No matter who you are, this speech has the potential to motivate and inspire you to strive for success regardless of your circumstances in life. Liam is New Zealand’s blade runner. Hailing from Nelson, Liam had only been training for two years when he burst onto the track at the Rio Paralympics in 2016, winning a silver and two gold medals while smashing records in the process.
Liam was Disabled Sportsperson of the Year at the Halberg Awards this year and became a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2017. After completing a Bachelor in Marketing and International Business while training, Liam is now a sought-after keynoter and invests in startups. Now, he’s on a mission to develop hi-tech prosthetics with the aim of becoming the fastest man on earth. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Stigma, ignorance, neglect, superstition and communication barriers for children with disabilities are among the social factors that explain their discrimination and isolation from society.

Children with disabilities are often 'invisible' to service providers and they are at greater risk of violence than their non-disabled peers. Children with disabilities are often disproportionately placed in alternative care, rather than remaining with their families. These raise concerns for their protection.
UNICEF's strategy is to promote the recognition of all children as full members of society and the respect for all of their rights without any discrimination. We work with partners to promote the inclusion of children with disabilities into society by stimulating changes in attitudes and practices of the general public and service providers toward children with disabilities. Further, UNICEF works with governments to help ensure that family members of persons with disabilities, who are often the primary caretakers, and children with disabilities themselves, receive assistance from the State for disability-related expenses, adequate training, counselling, financial assistance and respite care. We also support efforts to ensure that all programmes, including recreational programmes, public services, facilities and relevant buildings are accessible.
