MaximsNewsNetwork: 09 May 2010 - UNICEF: Zambia - UNICEF and the government of Zambia recently opened the Zambia Childrens Climate Conference, a series of lectures and workshops to teach the science behind climate change, tree planting, water harvesting, drip irrigation, solar energy, energy saving techniques and environmental issues. Zambias first lady, Thandiwe Banda, spoke to delegates about the environmental issues affecting their country, now the 2nd most deforested country on the planet with recent floods, attributed to climate change, that displaced over a thousand people in the Lusaka earlier this year. The countrys permanent secretary at the Ministry of Tourism, Environment, and Natural Resources and UNICEFs regional director for Eastern and Southern Africa opened the conference and stressed that the exploitation of natural resources continues unabated throughout much of Africa, destroying forests, grasslands, water ways, soil and all who rely upon them. This was the worlds first national childrens conference on climate change, since the CCF, the Copenhagen Climate Forum, took place in the countrys capital, Lusaka. The conference, which was attended by almost 200 children from all 9 provinces of Zambia, was supported by UNICEF and Government, but organized by Zambias youth delegates to Copenhagen, who returned to their country determined to make a difference.
