Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (established 1887) is one of India's premier engineering and technical institutes, located in Mumbai (erstwhile Bombay), Maharashtra, India and attracts highly talented students. Until 26 January 1997, it was known as the Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute.
VJTI is an academically and administratively autonomous institute, although it is a part of the University of Mumbai and its degrees are issued by the University.
* VJTI was ranked 8th best in the country, among private engineering colleges, in an Outlook magazine survey in 2007.
* VJTI was ranked 9th best in the country, among all engineering colleges, in an India Today survey in 1999.
The Institute started with the Licentiate Diploma in Textile Technology and under the guidance of various visionaries, over a period of 120 years it has developed to the current status which houses about 3500 students in the campus pursuing their B.Tech., M.Tech., M.C.A. and Ph.D. degrees and different diplomas and postgraduate diplomas.

All the departments are equipped with modern laboratories. These facilities are made available to the students and also to the industry for testing. Curricula of all the under graduate and post graduate degree programs are regularly updated to include current trends and industry needs. Many experts from industry and other academic institutes deliver seminars on special topics and latest developments for the VJTI students and faculty.
* Mechanical Engineering Department
The Mechanical Engineering department and workshops are housed in the extensions outflanking the main institute on the north and was established in 1946. The department also contains the classrooms for first year undergraduate degree courses.
The department has facilities in Metallurgy, Dynamics, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning, Automobile, Heat Engines, Robotics and Automation, CAD/CAM/CAE, Mechanical Measurements and Fluid Mechanics and Workshops in Machine, Smithy, Carpentry, Filing and Welding. All laboratories have testing facilities. The department also provides certification for several activities on behalf of the government. The marks required to get admission into Mechanical Engineering has been rising steadily over the past few years.

* Electrical Engineering Department
''The department offers courses in electrical engineering and electronics engineering.
The Electrical Engineering department is situated in the south wing and an extension building was constructed in its rear and was established in 1947. The Siemens High Voltage laboratory is accommodated in a special block in the south wing. The electrical workshop is housed in the extension building. The department has 14 laboratories with ultra modern equipments such as Digital Signal Processing, Microprocessor, Communications, Bio-medical, Electrical Motors and Drives and Instrumentation. These laboratories have testing facilities such as high voltage testing of induction motors, transformers, insulation resistance of compounds, impulse testing up to 800KV and power frequency testing as per I.S. norms.

* Civil & Environmental Engineering Department
The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering was established in 1912. The department is situated in the extension of the main building on the first floor. The department has facilities in Environmental Engineering, Air-Pollution and Noise Pollution, Bio-assay, Transportation and Highway Engineering, Land Survey, Geology and Plumbing. The department conducts courses at the diploma, graduate and post graduate levels. The department is also recognized for doctoral research by the University of Mumbai. It has laboratories equipped with the most modern equipments and test facilities. The department continuously undertakes research and consultancy projects to share and enhance technical knowledge.
The faculty and students both benefit from the exposure they get through these activities.All the laboratories are equipped with modern equipment and testing facilities. The department has started a post-graduate course in Construction Management in addition to the postgraduate course.

* Production Engineering Department
The office, staff-rooms and class-rooms are on the second floor of the Mechanical Engineering block. The laboratories are on the ground and the mezzanine floors. The department (earlier named as Industrial Engineering Department) was set-up in 1959. Four year degree course in Production Engineering was started in 1973. The department has four well-equipped laboratories viz. Process laboratory, Metrology laboratory, Work-study laboratory and Computer laboratory.
The department's students conduct an annual inter-college departmental festival called Prodology.

* Computer Technology Department
''The department offers courses in computer engineering and information technology.
The department situated at the Southern wing mainly on the first floor was formed in1985. The computer center was established in 1976 in collaboration with the National Centre for Software Development and Computing Techniques located in the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. It is housed near the Institute's quadrangle. A course in Computer Applications was started in 1984, Master’s course in 1985 and a Bachelor’s course in 1986. The computer center has a facility with over 150 PCs and workstations for software development in several areas.

* Textile Manufacturers' Department
The Textile Manufacturers' Department is housed in a large north-light steel trusted roof building. The textile department is one of the two departments started at VJTI when it was first established in 1887. The department is spacious and has modern spinning, weaving and non-woven machinery in its workshops and modern testing equipments in its laboratories. The department has carried out a number of industrial consultancy projects including geo-textile project for paved and unpaved roads, sponsored by the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, etc.
The department's students conduct an annual inter-college departmental festival called Vastra.

This department was established in the year 1960. The department is situated in the northern and southern sections of the main building.It deals with Structural engineering and Geotechnical engineering. It also provides the base needed for all the degree courses run by the institute in the subjects of strength of materials and engineering mechanics for diploma and degree students.It conducts postgraduate degree courses in civil engineering with structural engineering as an area of specialization. The department has an excellent relationship with industry and undertakes considerable amount of consultancy work.

* Technical and Applied Chemistry Department
The department of Technical and Applied Chemistry has been established to make students proficient in basic applied chemistry. This subjects is common for all first year bachelor's degree students. The department also conducts courses in the areas of cosmetics, foods, drugs, and paints at the diploma and post graduate levels. The department has Paints,Textile Processing,Water Analysis,Oil Analysis,Cement Materials,Foods, Drugs & Cosmetics laboratories and testing facilities. In addition to research work, the department also conducts industrial testing in the fields of textiles, paints, detergents, cements and other materials.

In order to have a strong mathematical base at both the degree and diploma levels, the department conducts lectures for the first four semesters of diploma courses and the first five semesters of the degree courses.The department takes the responsibility of preparing students for the high levels of mathematical skills required in modern engineering.
The department of Physics was established in 1970 to impart basic training in physics to the diploma and degree students.The department conducts physics lectures for the first year degree and diploma students. It has laboratory facilities for limited testing of conductivities of materials, optical properties of materials and other areas of research.The laboratories are equipped with He-Ne laser systems, optical communication kits and ultrasonic flow detectors.
* Humanities and Management Department
The department had its origin in the need for engineers to be proficient in Basic English, Economics and Management.The department has been functioning independently since 1973. The department conducts courses for both degree and diploma students in Communication Skills, Economics, Management and Humanities.The department also conducts a number of activities of the institute. The administrative activities include the conduction of class elections, co-curricular activities for diploma students and preparing of reports. The department also actively participates in social and extracurricular activities including the annual magazine and the institutes' cultural and technical festivals.
The Society of Robotics and Automation was founded in 2008 under the Mechanical Engineering Department. The student society works in the field of robotics and automation. Senior student members of the society train and assist students to undertake projects, participate in competitions, undertake industrial and research projects. Students from the Society of Robotics and Automation won Round 1 of the DRDO Golden Jubilee Students Competition organised by the DRDO in association with the ADE, for which they received a cash prize of Rs. 50,000. They were one of ten teams to represent their institute at Round 2 held in Bangalore in May 2009.
* Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) , VJTI Collegiate Chapter
The SAE VJTI Collegiate Chapter is the youngest society in the institute, under the Mechanical Engineering Department which intends to put automobile enthusiasts together for taking part in various national and international level competitions. The team is currently working on an off road vehicle to take part in Baja Asia 2010 to be held in January 2010 near Indore.
* Debate & Literary Arts Society (DLA), VJTI
The Debate & Literary Arts Society, commonly known as the DLA, is a VJTI student organization under the Humanities and Management Department. The DLA's activities encompass everything ranging from Literature and Debates to MUNs and Creative Writing. The DLA organizes regular lectures and interactive seminars on various topics such as Economics, History, Psychology and Philosophy, primarily non-technical. Committee members are in charge of the VJTI Inter-Department Debate Competition, the MUN Club and other such initiatives.
A large part of the DLA's efforts and resources are concentrated into the official VJTI newsletter, titled 'VJ.News'. The DLA is responsible for the entire coordination and execution of this newsletter which is published five times every academic year.
* Association of Computer Enthusiasts (ACE), VJTI
The Association of Computer Enthusiasts (ACE) is a student body under the Computer Technology Department at VJTI.
* The Gymkhana Group:
The gymkhana is concerned with sports, both outdoor and indoor. There are playgrounds for cricket, football, volleyball and a tennis court. At the end of the academic year, the gymkhana group organizes a sports day.
* NCC:
The Institute has five Maharashtra EME COY NCC units to provide NCC training to the students. The NCC cadets are sent for military training as well as to the various all India trekking and leadership camps.
* Counseling Committee:
The Institute has a counseling committee for the students. The members of the committee help the students to deal with difficult situations, academic or otherwise.
* The Social Group:
With a view to encourage the overall development of the students, the institute has constituted The Social Group with all the degree as well diploma students as it members. The Social Group organizes extracurricular activities like dramatics, debates, exhibitions, lectures by well known personalities etc. At the end of the academic year, it organizes the Annual Social in which various entertainment programs are presented by the students. It also organizes intercollegiate competitions during the year.
The college also publishes its annual magazine titled Nirmaan.
