Aga Khan II
Aga Khan II (; or, less commonly but more correctly آقا خان دوّم; ), was the title of Aqa Ali Shah (; ; b. 1830 in Mahallat, Iran; d. August 1885 in Pune, India), the 47th Imam of the Nizari Ismaili Muslims. A member of the Iranian royal family, he became the Imam in 1881. During his lifetime, he helped to better not only his own community, but also the larger Muslim community of India. He was an avid sportsman and hunter.

Bee Ho Gray
Bee Ho Gray (born Emberry Cannon Gray on April 7, 1885 in Leon, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory - August 3, 1951 in Pueblo, Colorado) was a Western performer who spent fifty years displaying his skills in Wild West Shows, vaudeville, circus, silent films and radio. While he was primarily known as an expert at trick roping, he was also skilled with knife throwing, bullwhips (specifically the Australian black snake whip), trick riding and the banjo. He wove all of these skills together in a homely comic routine. Throughout his long career he was constantly compared to Will Rogers, which was befitting, considering the two performers worked together several times and developed their acts together in the early 1900s.

The Cree are one of the largest groups of First Nations/Native Americans in North America, with 200,000 members living in Canada. Friedrich Kellner
August Friedrich Kellner (February 1, 1885 – November 4, 1970) was a mid-level official in Germany who worked as a justice inspector in Mainz and Laubach. During the First World War, Kellner was an infantryman in a Hessian regiment. After the war he became a political organizer for the Social Democratic Party of Germany, which was the leading political party during the time of the turbulent and short-lived Weimar Republic, the name given to Germany’s first democracy. Kellner campaigned against Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. At the beginning of World War II, Kellner began writing in a diary to record his observations of the Nazi regime. He titled his work Mein Widerstand, meaning "My Opposition". After the war Kellner served on denazification boards, and he also helped to reestablish the Social Democratic Party. He gave his diary to his American grandson in 1968 to translate into English and to bring it to the attention of the public. He explained his purpose for writing the diary:

George B. McClellan
George Brinton McClellan (December 3, 1826 October 29, 1885) was a major general during the American Civil War. He organized the famous Army of the Potomac and served briefly (November 1861 to March 1862) as the general-in-chief of the Union Army. Early in the war, McClellan played an important role in raising a well-trained and organized army for the Union. Although McClellan was meticulous in his planning and preparations, these characteristics may have hampered his ability to challenge aggressive opponents in a fast-moving battlefield environment. He chronically overestimated the strength of enemy units and was reluctant to apply principles of mass, frequently leaving large portions of his army unengaged at decisive points.

George Westinghouse, Jr (October 6, 1846 – March 12, 1914) was an American entrepreneur and engineer who invented the railway air brake and was a pioneer of the electrical industry. Westinghouse was one of Thomas Edison's main rivals in the early implementation of the American electricity system. Westinghouse's system, which used alternating current based on the extensive research by Nikola Tesla, ultimately prevailed over Edison's insistence on direct current. Joe "King" Oliver (May 11, 1885 – April 10, 1938) was a jazz cornet player and bandleader. He was particularly noted for his playing style, pioneering the use of mutes. John Ormsby (1829–1895) was a nineteenth-century British translator. He is most famous for his 1885 English translation of Miguel de Cervantes' Don Quixote de la Mancha, perhaps the most scholarly and accurate English translation of the novel up to that time. It is so precise that Samuel Putnam, who published his own English translation of the novel in 1949, faults Ormsby for duplicating Cervantes' pronouns so closely that the meaning of the sentences sometimes becomes confusing.

He is remembered for his remarkable breakthroughs in the causes and preventions of diseases. His discoveries reduced mortality from puerperal fever, and he created the first vaccine for rabies and anthrax. His experiments supported the germ theory of disease. He was best known to the general public for inventing a method to stop milk and wine from causing sickness, a process that came to be called pasteurization. Pasteur also made many discoveries in the field of chemistry, most notably the molecular basis for the asymmetry of certain crystals. Muhammad Ahmad
Muhammad Ahmad bin Abd Allah (otherwise known as the Mahdi or Muhammad Ahmed Al Mahdi Arabic:محمد أحمد المهدي) (August 12, 1844 – June 22, 1885) was a Sufi sheikh of the Samaniyya order in Sudan who, on June 29, 1881, proclaimed himself as the Mahdi or messianic redeemer of the Islamic faith. His proclamation came during a period of widespread resentment among the Sudanese population of the oppressive policies of the Turco-Egyptian rulers, and capitalized on the messianic beliefs popular among the various Sudanese sufi sects (or tariqa/turuq) of the time. More broadly, the Mahdiyya, as Muhammad Ahmad's movement was called, was influenced by earlier Mahdist movements in West Africa, as well as Wahabism and other puritanical forms of Islamic revivalism that developed in reaction to the growing military and economic dominance of the European powers throughout the 19th century.

North-West Rebellion
The North-West Rebellion (or the North-West Resistance, Saskatchewan Rebellion, or Second Riel Rebellion) of 1885 was a brief and unsuccessful uprising by the Métis people of the District of Saskatchewan under Louis Riel against the Dominion of Canada, which they believed had failed to address their concerns for the survival of their people. Despite some early victories at Duck Lake, Fish Creek and Cut Knife, the rebellion resulted in the destruction of numerous Métis and allied Aboriginal forces, and the hanging of Louis Riel. Tensions between French Canada and English Canada increased for some time. Due to the role that the Canadian Pacific Railway played in transporting troops, political support increased and the legislature authorized funds to complete the nation's first transcontinental railway.

Thomas A. Hendricks
Thomas Andrews Hendricks (September 7, 1819 November 25, 1885) was an American politician who served as a Representative and a Senator from Indiana, the 16th Governor of Indiana, and the 21st Vice President of the United States. The first Democratic governor to be elected in the Northern United States following the American Civil War, and having defended the Democratic position in the Senate during the war, Hendricks quickly grew in popularity among the national party. After two previous failed attempts to win election to the governor's office, his term was marked by the Panic of 1873, which consumed most of his energies. He was opposed by a strong Republican majority in the Indiana General Assembly, and was unable to enact any significant legislation. Hendricks was the unsuccessful candidate for Vice President on the Democratic ticket with Samuel Tilden in the controversial presidential election of 1876. Despite his poor health, he accepted his party's second nomination to run for Vice President in the election of 1884 as Grover Cleveland's running mate, and served in that office until his death only eight months later.

Ulysses S. Grant
Ulysses S. Grant (born Hiram Ulysses Grant; April 27, 1822 – July 23, 1885) was the 18th President of the United States (1869–1877) as well as military commander during the Civil War and post-war Reconstruction periods. Under Grant's command, the Union Army defeated the Confederate military and ended the Confederate States of America. Grant began his lifelong career as a soldier after graduating from the United States Military Academy in 1843. Fighting in the Mexican American War, he was a close observer of the techniques of Generals Zachary Taylor and Winfield Scott. He resigned from the Army in 1854, then struggled to make a living in St. Louis. After many financial setbacks, he finally moved to Galena, Illinois where he worked as a clerk in his father's tannery shop, making Galena his permanent legal home.

Congo Free State
The Congo Free State was a government privately controlled by Leopold II, King of the Belgians through a dummy non-governmental organization, the Association internationale africaine. Leopold was the sole shareholder and chairman, who increasingly used it for rubber, copper and other minerals in the upper Lualaba River basin (though it had been set up on the understanding that its purpose was to uplift the local people and develop the area). The state included the entire area of the present Democratic Republic of the Congo and existed from 1885 to 1908. The Swanage Railway is a long heritage railway in the Purbeck district of Dorset, England. The railway follows the route of the Purbeck branch line between Norden railway station, Corfe Castle railway station, Harman's Cross railway station, Herston Halt railway station and Swanage. The line was re−connected to the mainline at Wareham, Dorset along a stretch of the branch line that had previously only remained open to freight traffic until 2005. Trains operate on the Swanage Railway between Swanage and Norden Park & Ride every weekend and Bank Holiday from mid-February to the end of the year, and every day of the week from April to October; with Santa Special services in December. Snouck's extraordinary collection of sepia-tinted images of Mecca in a bygone age have gone on display in Dubai ahead of the annual Hajj pilgrimage that originally drew him to the heart of Islam. Accompanied by crackling, eerie soundscapes captured by Snouck using Thomas Edison's newly-invented wax cylinders, the exhibition paints a very different picture from the ornate and built-up Mecca familiar to modern visitors. Among the newly-restored platinum prints, one image taken from a nearby hillside shows the Kaaba, the instantly recognizable cubic building considered by Muslims to be the holiest place on the planet. But though the galleried compound which surrounds it is echoed by Mecca's contemporary architecture, the sparsely-built city of Snouck's era bears only a passing resemblance, as do the rudimentary travelers' tents on the dusty plains outside the city. Chinese railroad workers in Canada :1880-1885
The "Memorial to Commemorate the Chinese Railroad Workers in Canada" was created by Eldon Garnet and Franicis Le Bouthillier. It is located at the intersection of Blue Jays Way and Navy Warf Ct. It is made primarily of wood and metals, and was erected in 1989. "From 1880 to 1885, seventeen thousand men from the province of Guangdong, China, came to work on the Western section of the railway through the treacherous terrain of the Canadian Rockies. More than four thousand Chinese workers lost their lives during construction" ("Memorial to commemorate," nd). On the other hand, the completion of the CPR was a watershed in the history of Chinese Canadian as the railway provided access to almost every part of Canada (Chan, 2000).Andrew Onderdonk, saviour of the CPR, hired Chinese railway workers in the face of hostility and prejudice because he believed them to be the most able and least expensive workers. Between 1880 and 1885, Chinese labourers drove the railhead through some of the most difficult and unforgiving terrain in the world. Liu Zhiqing (1885-1986)
Was often called the father of the moving dragon, Liu Zhiqing performs the Bagua Broadsword. Liu Zhiqing was from Gu'an County in Hebei and studied bagua with Liu Baozhen (disciple of Dong Hai Chuan). Liu Zhiqing was in his early 100's in this video.

Shot on November 22, 2009 at Boutique De Son in Montreal. Kevin Dean (professor at McGill's Schulich School of Music) demonstrates a perfectly preserved John Heald Trumpet. The instrument was made in Springfield Massachusetts, and bears the serial number 13, making this one of Heald's first trumpets, and as well an early example of trumpet in general. John Heald apprenticed under the significant Civil War era builder Fiske, and began manufacturing his own high quality instruments in 1885. Heald's cornets and early trumpets show the exacting quality of the master builder Fiske's instruments, both in terms of their aesthetic finishing, as well as their remarkable playing characteristics. Some innovations are found on the slightly more modern Heald instruments, including thumb activated water keys, and instrument wrap and bore designs that we now recognize as the relatively modern trumpet. This instrument functions perfectly, and has not sustained any damage or appreciable wear during its century and a quarter lifetime. It possesses a number of interesting features, including a straight through, gapless lead pipe, double telescoping tuning slide mechanism, and wide 'lazy' turns in the valve and tuning slides. These airflow patterns likely add to the warm cornettish timbre of the horn. Significantly, the tuning slide's wide radius differs from most examples of Heald trumpets, which have a smaller radius and generous taper. This is rare footage of the world's first car's engine igniting & running. From Wikipedia: After developing a successful gas-powered two-stroke piston engine in 1873, Karl Benz focused on developing a motorized vehicle. His Patent Motorwagen (or Motor Car), introduced in 1886, is widely regarded as the first purpose-built automobile, that is a vehicle designed from the ground up to be motorized. Benz unveiled it officially on July 3, 1886 on the Ringstraße in Mannheim, Germany. The vehicle was patented with German patent number 37435, which Benz applied for on January 29, 1886.

"What if" battle between Scipio Africanus and Julius Caesar. This is a fun (not exactly accurate) thing I do every once in awhile for Rome Total War. I created two historically-themed armies (out of 10000 denarii). For both Julius and Scipio's armies, I eliminated the auxiliary elements so that we're left with just the core Roman contingents. So no cavalry for Caesar. No Numidian cavalry for Scipio either. Stuff like that. I take the role as Scipio Africanus this time. My opponent becomes Julius Caesar. Map: Southwater Denarii: 10000
