Sir Adrian Cedric Boult CH (8 April 1889 – 22 February 1983) was an English conductor. Brought up in a prosperous mercantile family he followed musical studies in England and at Leipzig, Germany, with early conducting work in London for the Royal Opera House and Sergei Diaghilev's ballet company. His first prominent post was conductor of the City of Birmingham Orchestra in 1924. When the British Broadcasting Corporation appointed him director of music in 1930, he established the BBC Symphony Orchestra and became its chief conductor. The orchestra set standards of excellence that were rivalled in Britain only by the London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO), founded two years later.

Albert Claude (August 24, 1899 – May 22, 1983) was a Belgian biologist who shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1974 with Christian de Duve and George Emil Palade. He studied medicine at the University of Liege (Belgium). During the winter of 1928-29 he worked in Berlin, first at the Institut für Krebsforschung, and then at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Biology, Dahlem. In the summer of 1929 he joined the Rockefeller Institute. While working at Rockefeller University in the 1930s and 1940s, he used the electron microscope to make images of cells which deepened the scientific understanding of cellular structure and function. He discovered the chloroplasts in the cell.

Barbara McClintock (June 16, 1902 – September 2, 1992), the 1983 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, was an American scientist and one of the world's most distinguished cytogeneticists. McClintock received her PhD in botany from Cornell University in 1927, where she was a leader in the development of maize cytogenetics. The field remained the focus of her research for the rest of her career. From the late 1920s, McClintock studied chromosomes and how they change during reproduction in maize. Her work was groundbreaking: she developed the technique for visualizing maize chromosomes and used microscopic analysis to demonstrate many fundamental genetic ideas, including genetic recombination by crossing-over during meiosis—a mechanism by which chromosomes exchange information. She produced the first genetic map for maize, linking regions of the chromosome with physical traits, and demonstrated the role of the telomere and centromere, regions of the chromosome that are important in the conservation of genetic information. She was recognized amongst the best in the field, awarded prestigious fellowships, and elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1944.

Billy Fury, born Ronald Wycherley (17 April 1940 - 28 January 1983), was an internationally successful English pop singer from the late 1950s to the early 1960s, and remained an active songwriter until the 1980s. Ilya Valeryevich Kovalchuk (; born April 15, 1983) is a Russian professional ice hockey left winger who currently plays for the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League. Drafted first overall in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Atlanta Thrashers, he began his NHL career in 2001–02 with Atlanta and was nominated for the Calder Memorial Trophy as league rookie-of-the-year. He is a three-time NHL All-Star and won the Rocket Richard Trophy as the league's leading goal-scorer in 2004 in a three-way tie with Jarome Iginla and Rick Nash. After eight seasons with the Thrashers, he was traded to the Devils in February 2010 and recently signed a 17-year, $102 million deal with the New Jersey Devils, which was set to expire at the end of the 2026–27 season. The contract, however, was rejected by the NHL on July 21, 2010 due to the league's opinion that it circumvented the NHL's Collective Bargaining Agreement. On July 21, 2010, the National Hockey League Player's Association (NHLPA) filed a grievance on behalf of Kovalchuk to contest the issue of contract rejection, arguing that the contract was, in fact, legal, and did not violate the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. A "system arbitrator" was approved by both the NHL and NHLPA on July 31, 2010. On August 4, 2010, the court case involving this contract went underway and concluded on August 9, 2010 with the arbitrator ultimately ruling in favor of the NHL and voiding the contract, making Kovalchuk a free agent.

Maze Prison escape
The Maze Prison escape (known to Irish republicans as the Great Escape) took place on 25 September 1983 in County Down, Northern Ireland. HM Prison Maze (previously known as Long Kesh) was a maximum security prison considered to be one of the most escape-proof prisons in Europe, and held prisoners convicted of taking part in armed paramilitary campaigns during the Troubles. In the biggest prison escape in British history, 38 Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) prisoners, who had been convicted of offences including murder and causing explosions, escaped from H-Block 7 (H7) of the prison. One prison officer died of a heart attack as a result of the escape and twenty others were injured, including two who were shot with guns that had been smuggled into the prison. The escape was a propaganda coup for the IRA, and a British government minister faced calls to resign. The official inquiry into the escape placed most of the blame onto prison staff, who in turn blamed the escape on political interference in the running of the prison.

Tokyo Disneyland
is a 115 acre (465,000 m²) theme park at the Tokyo Disney Resort located in Urayasu, Chiba, Japan, near Tokyo. Its main gate is directly adjacent to both Maihama Station and Tokyo Disneyland Station. Music from Australia and New Zealand in the year 1983: Dragon's promo-video for the hit single 'Rain' (August, 1983) taken from the 1983 album 'The Body & The Beat'. After a four year hiatus (Marc Hunter's solo success and Todd Hunter's guitar duties in XL Capris), Dragon made a comeback with the hit single 'Rain' - penned by Todd Hunter and his wife Joanna Pigott (XL Capris singer). Other members of the new Dragon included Terry Chambers of UK band XTC on drums. Sadly, the band's main songwriter and keyboardist Paul Hewson was to die of a herion overdoes less than 18 months later. Note: Kerry Jacobson played drums on this track before quitting Dragon. XTC's Terry Chambers replaced Jacobson around the time this clip was shot. Chambers is playing drums in the video to a track that was originally recorded by Jacobson - just to clear mattes up.
