Hidden treasures - Luigi Boccherini - The complete symphonies (c. 1765-1798) - Selected highlights
≈ History ≈ At the end of the 1760s Jean-Baptiste Davaux and Carl Stamitz introduced a new musical genre to the European public in the form of the symphonie concertante. Both a direct descendant and a further development of the baroque tripartite opera sinfonia and the traditional sonata, the symphony would prove to be a vehicle of great importance for 18th century composers even before the form reached its revolutionary status with the advent of romanticism. The circumstances of Luigi Boccherini's life dictated that his main occupation would be the composition of chamber music, but he was in fact one of the first composers to embrace the new aesthetic: thus, upon his arrival to Madrid in 1769 Boccherini introduced himself to the Spanish public with the large-scale Symphony in C major (labeled as a "concerto") which would be his first work in the genre. The composer would go on to write no less than 28 extended symphonies (1). In particular, during his happy tenure as court composer to the Spanish infant Don Luis in Aranjuez he wrote no less than 3 symphonic cycles of 6 works each (2). (1): If we are to ignore the dubious nature of some pieces, such as G500, which are attributed to Boccherini. (2): Article is based on materials from the Grove Dictionary of Music and the essays of Christian Speck that accompany the CPO recordings that are highlighted in the present case. ≈ Music ≈ Boccherini's status as a chamber composer of elegant court music and a noted contemporary ...

Familiar classics - Luigi Boccherini - Cello Concerto No. 7 in G major (1770) - II. Adagio
History: The name of Luigi Boccherini (1743-1805) relates in the same way to the cello as the name of Niccolo Paganini is synonymous with the violin. The former is generally credited as one of the people who have enabled through their talent the cello to move to the role of a primary solo instrument, rather than a part of the bass line. In the case of Boccherini one should also note the fact that his role in the cello's elevation is not only limited to the composition of music for the instrument; the maestro was also recognized in his time as a virtuoso cellist and primarily a performer of his own works, notoriously adventurous in the use of the soloist's capabilities. In the case of the present upload we will focus on the Third Concerto or, to be precise, its central Adagio. The work's genesis could have been related in a note of its publication in Paris in 1770 and a mention of the fact that the composer was living in Spain at the time, working as a chamber composer for the Infante Don Luis and enjoying a period of financial stability, if it were not for one important detail: in 1895 German cellist Friedrich Grützmacher, searching to generate a romanticized arrangement of the composer's cello concertos on the basis of the Ninth Concerto in B-flat major, used an elaborated variant of the Adagio as a replacement for the original Andante grazioso (numerous other brief interpolations and extensive cuts are incorporated throughout the "Grützmacher" concerto which works as a ...

Luigi Boccherini - Minuetto
