My father (Ray Rasmussen) and I (Norm) took a drive down the Middle Fork of the John Day River on August 13, 1999. My father was age 95 at the time, and I was 52. This clip ends at Galena, about 10 miles below Bates. At Galena, is the footage of the house Cody, Marnie, Terry and Marnie Jo McConnell used to live, which was a stage coach stop at one time in the gold mining days. They moved down to Galena because Cody couldn't work due to severe lower back problems from a log falling accident when he worked in the woods for Edward Hines Lumber Company at Bates. At Galena, Marnie drove school bus, bussing kids from around that area to Bates in the morning and then driving them back home in the evenings. Terry McConnel was my age, and some of my fondest memories was when I would stay with him there at the old Stage Coach stop in Galena. We caught fish in the Middle Fork behind his house; we would take his dad's Willies jeep and explore all over the country, always looking for a coyote to shoot at. Terry had a dog that had incredible eyesight, and could spot a coyote 3/4's of a mile away. He would look up over the cab of the jeep, and would bark when he spotted a coyote. Sometimes we would have a hard time seeing the coyote; it would be so far away. We saw a lot of deer and quite a few elk on those trips. The house with the sign reading "Old Hunter Crossing" was the new house Cody and Marnie had built later on in life. As of January 7, 2009, Marnie still lives there. Cody <b>...</b>

We had a great time historic Galena this past October. Galena Illiois is a popular weekend getaway for the midwest region. There is nice scenery, quaint shops, cozy restaraunts, and rich history in this small town. You can stay at beautiful old victorian style bed and breakfasts if you like. There events going on all year to keep you busy, and skiing in the winter. Be sure to stop by the history museum and tour Grant's home. There are carriage rides, trolley tours, and creepy ghost tours. We really enjoyed strolling in and out of the small shops and just taking our camera out for some good shots. Most of the photos you see are ours, but some are....."borrowed". The Mississippi river is just minutes away and when crossed, puts you in Dubuque Iowa. Dubuque has hotel chains, restaraunts, and shopping if you need those things. We stayed at a hotel in Dubuque for our weekend there. www.visitgalena.org www.galena.com www.galena.org The music is by pianist/entertainer/minister Randy Estelle. We listened to this cd all the way up to Galena and thought it would be perfect to use one of our favorite songs for this video. The CD is called "Wind, Water, and Wispers". The song is called "Rainbows and Waterfalls". We have seen Randy in concert several times and really loved it. If you get a chance to see him, you'll be glad you did. Galena is one of the most abundant and widely distributed sulfide minerals. It crystallizes in the cubic crystal system often showing octahedral forms. It is often associated with the minerals sphalerite, calcite and fluorite.
Lead ore deposit
Galena deposits often contain significant amounts of silver as included silver sulfide mineral phases or as limited solid solution within the galena structure. These argentiferous galenas have long been the most important ore of silver in mining. In addition zinc, cadmium, antimony, arsenic and bismuth also occur in variable amounts in lead ores. Selenium substitutes for sulfur in the structure constituting a solid solution series. The lead telluride mineral altaite has the same crystal structure as galena. Within the weathering or oxidation zone galena alters to anglesite (lead sulfate) or cerussite (lead carbonate). Galena exposed to acid mine drainage can be oxidized to anglesite by naturally occurring bacteria and archaea, in a process similar to bioleachingGalena deposits are found worldwide in various environments.
Galena uses
One of the oldest uses of galena was as kohl, which in Ancient Egypt, was applied around the eyes to reduce the glare of the desert sun and to repel flies, which were a potential source of disease.Galena is a semiconductor with a small bandgap of about 0.4 eV which found use in early wireless communication systems. For example, it was used as the crystal in crystal radio sets, in which it was used as a point-contact diode to detect the radio signals. The galena crystal was used with a safety pin or similar sharp wire, which was known as a "cat's whisker". Making such wireless sets was a popular home hobby in Britain and other European countries during the 1930s. Derbyshire was one of the main areas where galena was mined.
Scientists that were linked to this application are Karl Ferdinand Braun and Sir Jagdish Bose. In modern wireless communication systems, galena detectors have been replaced by more reliable semiconductor devices, though silicon point-contact microwave detectors still exist in the market.
