The Israeli Defence Force is reportedly preparing settlers for the mass uprising of Palestinians, expected after the UN votes on a Palestinian statehood in September. The preparations include handing out tear gas and stun grenades to civilians. Military resistance to Palestinians will only bring international sanctions on Israel after Palestine is recognised in September's vote. That's the view of Jeff Halper, a political activist and co-founder of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions. RT on Twitter: twitter.com RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com

sri lankan army consider as a one of the word best Peacekeeping army for UN in Haiti The Sri Lanka Army has taken part in two peacekeeping missions with United Nations over the course of its history. First assignment was in the Congo (ONUC) (1960--1963). Most recently, following the signing of a ceasefire agreement was signed between the government and the LTTE in 2002, Sri Lankan forces were invited by the United Nations to be part of the UN peacekeeping force in Haiti. The Sri Lanka Light Infantry was selected to be part of the peacekeeping operations, and training programs on counter revolutionary warfare were conducted for the troops in Kukuleganga. Following the successful completion of the training, a battalion under the command of Col. KADA Karunasekara left for Haiti on October 22, 2004. In the process of the peacekeeping operations, 2 soldiers were killed in a raid in Petit-Goave. After over 6 months of service, the first contingent of the peacekeeping force returned to Sri Lanka on May 17, 2005.[18] In December 2007, 7th rotation of the Sri Lankan contingent had been deployed with a force of 991 officers and other ranks, many of the those deployed have been awarded the United Nations Medal for their services.

The United Nations has declared a state of famine in some parts of southern Somalia where the worst drought in over half a century is already being blamed for thousands of deaths. An estimated 3.7 million people, or more than one-third of Somalia's population, is in need of emergency aid, the UN's food agency said on Wednesday. "Every day of delay in assistance is literally a matter of life or death for children and their families in the famine-affected areas," Mark Bowden, the UN humanitarian co-ordinator for Somalia, said. "It is likely that tens of thousands will already have died, the majority of those being children." The UN has appealed for $300m to help victims of the drought, and aid groups have criticised the slow response of many Western governments to fund the shortfall. Al Jazeera's Mohamad Adow reports from Nairobi, Kenya.

British Foreign Minister William Hague said in a conference in Poland on Saturday that the European Union is capable of strengthening sanctions on Syria after deciding to impose sanctions on the country's oil exports. "They are very significant sanctions, they affect 25 percent of the revenue of the Syrian regime, so these area very substantial sanctions and they come on top of five previous rounds of sanctions, of assets freezes and travel bans on individuals in Syria who we believe are responsible for the violence that is taking place. So these are serious measures and I believe they will be taken very seriously by the Syrian regime. That does not of course preclude further measures being taken in the future there will be ways of further increasing that pressure in the future," said Hague. However, he did say that it was possible for President Bashar al-Assad to look elsewhere to export oil. On Friday, Syrian security forces shot at anti-government demonstrators in Douma, a suburb of the capital, Damascus, according to footage uploaded on a social media website. Al Arabiya cannot independently verify the footage, as Syria has banned foreign media in the country. Mass protests erupted in various rural areas, due to the heavy presence of army forces in urban towns, according to activists. International pressure continues to grow on the Syrian president while violent protest crackdowns evidently persist. Various rights groups estimate the death toll to over 2000. By Noora ...
