Evaporation
Evaporation is a type of vaporization of a liquid that occurs from the surface of a liquid into a gaseous phase that is not saturated with the evaporating substance. The other type of vaporization is boiling, which is characterized by bubbles of saturated vapor forming in the liquid phase. Steam produced in a boiler is another example of evaporation occurring in a saturated vapor phase. Evaporation that occurs directly from the solid phase below the melting point, as commonly observed with ice at or below freezing or moth crystals (napthalene or paradichlorobenzene), is called sublimation.
On average, a fraction of the molecules in a glass of water have enough heat energy to escape from the liquid. Water molecules from the air enter the water in the glass, but as long as the relative humidity of the air in contact is less than 100% (saturation), the net transfer of water molecules will be to the air. The water in the glass will be cooled by the evaporation until an equilibrium is reached where the air supplies the amount of heat removed by the evaporating water. In an enclosed environment the water would evaporate until the air is saturated.

In short ,Evaporation is a process by which water gets converted from a liquid form to vapor form below the temperature at which it boils; in particular, the process by which liquid water enters the atmosphere as water vapor.
The rate of evaporation depends on the temperature difference between the evaporating surface and the air, the relative humidity, and wind & surface area.
🔹How does water evaporate?
Water molecules move faster when heat is applied. The faster they move the easier it is for them to escape. When that happens, evaporation takes place.
Evaporation of oceans accounts to 80% of water delivered as precipitation with balance occurring on land, inland waters and plants surfaces.
🔹How does the wind affect evaporation?
Wind can help evaporation continue when the maximum vapor pressure has been reached. The air in blowing wind moves around and expands, creating more room for the vapors.
Increase in surface area results in the increase of the rate of evaporation.
Increase in humidity decrease the rate of evaporation.
🔹Why evaporation causes cooling?
liquid surface molecules absorb heat & escape out in the form of gas or water vapors, resulting in the decrease the kinetic energy of remaining molecules & cause the cooling effect .Examples of the cooling effect of evaporation are following:
- ether/Acetone drops place in a palm causes cooling palm.
- water in an earthen pot.
-the cold air of air cooler.
- sweating or perspiration in summer
- sprinkling water on floor or roof causes the cooling effect

EVAPORATION
Evaporation is a process by which water gets converted from a liquid form to vapor form. Evaporation of oceans accounts to 80% of water delivered as precipitation with balance occurring on land, inland waters and plants surfaces.
Experiment:
Place a beaker of water on a stove. Let the water boil. If you continue to heat the water it turns into steam and evaporates. Add some spoons of salt into water. Stir the water well, the salt gets dissolved. On heating the salt solution, the water gets evaporated leaving the salt behind. Common salt is one among them. When sea water is allowed to stand in shallow pits, water gets heated by the sunlight and slowly turns into water vapor by evaporation. In a few days water evaporates leaving the water behind leaving the salts completely. Common salt is then obtained from this mixture by further purification.

Evaporation
Evaporation is a type of vaporization of a liquid that occurs from the surface of a liquid into a gaseous phase that is not saturated with the evaporating substance. The other type of vaporization is boiling, which is characterized by bubbles of saturated vapor forming in the liquid phase. Steam produced in a boiler is another example of evaporation occurring in a saturated vapor phase. Evaporation that occurs directly from the solid phase below the melting point, as commonly observed with ice at or below freezing or moth crystals (napthalene or paradichlorobenzene), is called sublimation.
On average, a fraction of the molecules in a glass of water have enough heat energy to escape from the liquid. Water molecules from the air enter the water in the glass, but as long as the relative humidity of the air in contact is less than 100% (saturation), the net transfer of water molecules will be to the air. The water in the glass will be cooled by the evaporation until an equilibrium is reached where the air supplies the amount of heat removed by the evaporating water. In an enclosed environment the water would evaporate until the air is saturated.
