In this cool science experiment we make a thunderstorm in a test tube using alcohol, sulfuric acid and potassium permanganate. WARNING:This experiment is extremely dangerous as it involves corrosive acids and flammable liquids with a small, but not negligible, chance of a damaging explosion. Face shields, goggles, fire extinguishers and fire safety protocols must be present. This should only be attempted by an experienced chemist. Just get a test tube of 95% alcohol and carefully pipette a layer in a bottom of sulfuric acid. Then drop in some potassium permanganate crystals. The reaction of the permanganate and the sulfuric acid produce manganese heptoxide that explodes on contact with organic matter like the alcohol. This also works with acetone. I go back to sticking my hand into liquid nitrogen but remain uninjured due to the Leidenfrost effect. The Leidenfrost effect is the formation of a gas barrier between a hot surface and a boiling liquid if the temperature difference is great enough. This gas barrier greatly slows the heat transfer between the two and allows the liquid to last longer and consequently the hot surface to remain hot longer. This effect can be seen in a frying pan as it's being heated. At first the water quickly boils as it's dropped in but at a hot enough temperature the Leidenfrost effect takes over and makes the water skate around the surface lasting a very long time. Liquid nitrogen vs. a room temperature object will also exhibit the effect preventing it from instantly freezing the object... such as my hand.

How to Make Potassium Chlorate from Bleach and sodium-free salt. Warning: This produces small amounts of chlorine gas, this should be done outside or in a fumehood. Potassium chlorate is a useful oxidizer and small amounts can be easily made using household chemicals. Start by boiling a large quantity of household laundry bleach, at least half a liter, until crystals start to precipitate. Immediately take it off heating and let it cool. As it cools make a saturated solution of potassium chloride. Potassium chloride is sold as a "sodium-free" salt substitute. Now once the bleach is cooled, measure out an equal volume of potassium chloride solution and pour into the boiled bleach solution but do not mix in the crystals. Stir up the mixture and eventually potassium chlorate crystals will precipitate out. What's happening is the sodium hypochlorite in the bleach is disproportionating to form sodium chloride and sodium chlorate. Adding the potassium chloride exchanges the ions and precipitates out potassium chlorate. The boiling is required for this reaction to work; you can't simply let the bleach evaporate.

Make "Elephant Toothpaste" - The Decomposition of Hydrogen Peroxide

In this video we show the classic science demonstration of "elephant toothpaste". Warning: hydrogen peroxide causes burns, wear gloves. The procedure is very simple, first mix 50mL of detergent with 100mL of 30% hydrogen peroxide. Then add in 10mL of a saturated solution of potassium iodide. The mixture will then produce a massive foam. A variation is to also add 5g of starch to the peroxide mixture. When it foams the foam will have light and dark patches due to the uneven reaction of starch and triodide that forms. Yeast can be used in place of iodide for a slower reaction, but this also allows you to add fluorescent dye to the mixture to make a "glowing elephant toothpaste" when you shine ultraviolet light on it. In all of these experiments what's happening is the hydrogen peroxide is being catalytically decomposed into water and oxygen by the iodide or the yeast. This creates bubbles of oxygen that then foam up due to the detergent.

How to Make Manganese Sulfate from Manganese Dioxide. We'll show two ways on how to do this. One using sulfuric acid and oxalic acid, and another using sulfur dioxide. First the manganese dioxide must be thoroughly washed and filtered to remove all soluble contaminants like zinc chloride and ammonium chloride. In the first method 30grams of oxalic acid, 300mL of water, and 13mL of sulfuric acid are mixed together. Then the manganese dioxide is continually added until the solution stops bubbling. In the second method. The manganese dioxide is mixed with water and an excess of sulfur dioxide is bubbled through. The reaction produces manganese dioxide directly. Finally, after both methods. The mixture is filtered to give pink manganese sulfate. This will eventually be used to make manganese dioxide electrodes.

NurdRage Presents: 4 ways to make fire without matches or lighters using chemistry. Warning: These experiments are for educational purposes only and are not meant to be repeated. First, a small mount of potassium permanganate is mixed with glycerin. The reaction might be too slow to do anything so we added a few drops of water to get things going. Second, a mixture of ammonium nitrate and zinc is place ontop of a paper towel. The finer the ingredients are the better this will work. To activate it a few drops of hydrochloric acid are added. (We are well aware that addition of chloride from salt or ammonium chloride will produce a water-activated mixture. But we specifically choose not to demonstrate this for safety reasons, as that particular composition can spontaneously ignite during handling causing severe injury). Third, a piece of tissue is soaked in acetone to make it more flammable. Then a drop of sulfuric acid is drawn into a pipette and the pipette is dipped in potassium permanganate to pick up some crystals. Then the sulfuric acid is squeezed out causing it to mix with permanganate and form manganese heptoxide that instantly sets the tissue on fire. Fourth, sodium chlorate and sugar are thoroughly mixed and placed onto a tray. To activate the mixture sulfuric acid is added until it ignites. We demonstrate three cool things in science including silver trees, cold-activated fluorescence and the fiery reaction of sodium chlorate and candy. First, copper wire is placed into a silver nitrate solution. This makes trees of silver crystals grow off the copper due to a redox reaction, but by eye this is extremely hard to see. Under the microscope however you can actually see this happening in real time. And if the conditions are perfectly right, it can grow quite quickly. Second, Dr. Soprano, a colleague of Dr. N. Butyl Lithium, donated 3mg of an interesting chemical called 9,10-dihydroplatinaanthracene-4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine. This chemical, among other things, has the property that it is only fluorescent when solid, not when liquid. So if a non-fluorescent solution is cooled with liquid nitrogen until it freezes, it becomes fluorescent. Third, the classic reaction of sodium chlorate and candy. Molten sodium chlorate instantly ignites flammable materials and the resulting firestorm can be quite dramatic. "Anti" Magnetic water and Levitating Graphite by Diamagnetism

Diamagnetism is the property of a substance to be repelled by a magnetic field. Interestingly enough, water shows this effect. We build a simple, but very sensitive detector to show this. We also show pyrolytic carbon that is so diamagnetic that it can float above magnets if they are arranged the right way. Water is diamagnetic, meaning it's slightly repelled by a magnetic field. But in everyday life this is almost impossible to notice. We need to build a very sensitive detector to see it. Just get a basin of water and float a styrofoam block in it. Styrofoam is very light and so even the small repulsive force of a test tube of water will have a noticeable push on it. Push the test tube of water into the center of the block and simply hold a strong neodymium magnet as close as possible to the tube without touching it. It's a very small force, but eventually the block will start moving away from the magnet. Pyrolytic graphite, also called pyrolytic carbon, exhibits the same effect and can even be made to levitate on top of a magnet. A single magnet is unstable since the graphite will like to fall off the side. But having four magnets and arranging them like in the video will create a "void" in the center that the graphite "falls" into and remains stably levitated. Make Luminol - The Complete Guide

In this video we make luminol from domestically available chemicals. The process pretty complicated and dangerous at parts and so should only performed by, or under the direct supervision of, an experienced chemist. First we obtain diethylhexyl phthalate by refluxing 50g of finely cut vinyl gloves in enough isopropanol to completely cover them for at least one hour, preferably three to four. The alcohol solution of diethylhexyl phthalate is filtered and the supernatant is boiled until it reduces to half its volume. An equal amount of water along with 10g of sodium hydroxide is added and the mixture boiled for an hour. This causes the diethylhexyl phthalate to hydrolyze into phthalic acid and 2-ethylhexanol. After the solution cools it will phase separate into an aqueous layer containing disodium phthalate and an organic layer containing the alcohols. Retaining just the aqueous layer, 25mL of 12 molar hydrochloric acid is added to precipitate the phthalic acid. Chilling may be necessary. The supernatant is discarded and the residue of wet phthalic acid is purified and converted into phthalic anhydride by heating it to 300 Celsius. First the water boils off and then the phthalic anhydride evaporates and condenses on the sides of the beaker. At this point a flask of cold water is placed over the beaker to allow the phthalic anhydride to deposit on it. We make sodium silicate from drain cleaner and those little gel beads you find packaged with electronic items for humidity control. The procedure is really simple, just make a solution of 10mL with 4-8grams of sodium hydroxide, use the full 8 grams if you want stoichiometric sodium silicate, and 4 grams if you want "liquid glass" solution for doing the chemical garden experiments. Heat the solution and add in 6 grams worth of crushed silica gel beads. The finer the better. if they aren't dissolving, you might need to add more water. Once it's dissolved, you'll have a concentrated solution of sodium silicate. How to make phosphorescent glow in the dark powder. Also known as luminescent, photoluminescent or simply glow powder. Warning: This experiment uses mildly toxic chemicals, wear gloves when handling them. In addition, the combustion reaction must be performed outside or in a fume-hood due to the resulting smoke and gasses. For this experiment you'll need: Strontium Nitrate: www.youtube.com Aluminum Nitrate: www.youtube.com Purification by recrystalization: www.youtube.com Europium and dysprosium nitrates: www.youtube.com And you'll need nitric acid to make the above nitrates: www.youtube.com The procedure is relatively straightforward: 1.875g of aluminum nitrate nonahydrate with 530mg of strontium nitrate, 10.7mg of europium nitrate pentahydrate, 21.9mg of dysprosium nitrate pentahydrate and 30.9mg of boric acid are dissolved in 3mL of distilled water. 3.9g of pure urea is added and shaken until dissolved. The mixture is heated in a 1000watt microwave for 4 minutes. Eventually it'll ignite and combust. The white "ash" is the glow powder. Can be used in Glow in the Dark Paint if crushed into a powder and mixed with an appropriate clear paint/resin/lacquer/glue.

In this video we turn copper pennies into silver and finally to gold. Obviously it's a chemistry trick but still impressive. First we get 30g of zinc sulfate and dissolve it into 100mL of water. Zinc sulfate was made back in our video on making a copper sulfate and zinc battery: www.youtube.com If you don't have zinc sulfate or can't make it, you can also use zinc chloride. This can be made by simply mixing hydrochloric acid with zinc metal and waiting until the fizzing stops. Then we drop in several cut strips of zinc metal. Zinc metal was obtained from our video on getting useful materials from batteries: www.youtube.com The solution is heated to a boil and copper pennies, that have been thoroughly washed/cleaned, are dropped in. They must touch the zinc in order for this reaction to work. Leave it in for five to ten minutes. The zinc metal dissolves and releases electrons that go into the copper and give it a negative charge. The zinc ions in solution now redeposit form a thin layer of zinc metal. Giving the coin a silvery color. Now the smart physical chemist might wonder how this can possibly work. Overall we're going from zinc metal to zinc metal and at first it seems like we're missing something about thermodynamics. What is the driving force? Cool Science: Restore Silver with Electrochemistry

How to restore old silver with aluminum foil or a battery by electrochemistry. Old silver is often tarnished by a thin layer of silver sulfide that appears as a brown color. The silver sulfide can be electrochemically converted back into pure silver if a negative charge is applied. To do this, first make a solution of equal parts baking soda and table salt (NaCl) and adding enough hot water until they dissolve. Then simply place a silver object in the solution and contact it with a large piece of aluminum foil. In a short time the silver will be restored. A very cool way to do the same thing is to use a battery. Connect the negative end of the battery to the silver and the positive end to a large electrode, like a copper plate, and dip them both in the solution. This process occurs due to electrochemical reduction of the silver sulfide to silver. Special notes: THIS ONLY WORKS WITH ELEMENTAL SILVER! This restoration method does not work with silvery things like stainless steel or chrome. So make sure the item you want to experiment on really is silver before trying this. A low voltage battery is best for this experiment, around 3 volts. Higher voltages do not improve the process and may actually damage the item you're trying to restore. Additional ingredients include ethyl acetate as a solvent, sodium acetate as a base, 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene to give it the green color, and hydrogen peroxide to react with the TCPO and create light. The exact proportions are: 15mL of ethyl acetate 3mg of 9,10-bis(phenyethynyl) anthracene 1g of sodium acetate 800mg of TCPO 3mL of hydrogen peroxide added last to initiate the reaction. The exact same process is used in glow sticks. This is NOT mountain dew. Mountain dew cannot glow like this, it does not have the crucial TCPO chemical or any chemical like that. The reaction will glow in the dark for several minutes if you use ethyl acetate as the solvent. It will glow for several hours if you use diethyl phthalate as the solvent. How to make elemental iodine from sulfuric acid and sodium or potassium iodide. Warning: Reaction must be done outside or in a fumehood due to production of toxic gases including hydrogen sulfide. First, get your sodium or potassium iodide and completely dissolve it in a minimum of water. Then place it into an ice bath to keep it cold. Second, add concentrated sulfuric acid directly to the solution and constantly stir. As you add it will produce iodine. At first the mixture will become pasty and eventually liquefy. Once it's liquefied, pour it directly into cold water (the ice bath itself is useful for this) and stir it up. Then let it settle for ten minutes or so. The iodine will settle to the bottom so pour off the water and acid. The iodine will still be contaminated with acid so you'll need to add water and pour off several times to get out most of the acid. Filter it and now you have a solid plug of iodine. It's usable as-is for most purposes but you can purify by placing it in a beaker with a ice-filled round bottom flask on top. Then heat the beaker. The iodine will vaporize and deposit on the flask. A cool reaction is to take some iodine and pour magnesium powder over it. It will react to form a purple cloud of iodine vapor. If it doesn't react quickly enough, just add a drop of water. We make potassium permanganate from the potassium nitrate and manganese dioxide we obtained in previous videos. Warning: This experiment deals with very high temperatures in glass equipment. Face shields and protection against shattering glass is required. In addition small quantities of toxic gases are produced. This experiment should be performed outside or in a fume hood. Make a vial with a mixture of 7 grams of potassium nitrate and 1 gram of manganese dioxide. Using a torch carefully heat the mixture so they melt together. Smoke and fumes should be liberated as the potassium nitrate oxidizes any contaminants in the manganese dioxide. Keep the mixture molten for a few minutes. Now add 2 grams of potassium hydroxide and heat the mixture again thoroughly. It will boil and turn green as the reactants generate potassium manganate. Keep it on a gentle boil for several minutes. Let the vial cool and then smash it apart with a hammer. Obtain the green solid and pulverize it into a powder. Mix this powder with 50 mL of water and dissolve the green potassium manganate. Let it settle and then pour off the solution. The solution can be converted to potassium permanganate by adding drops of either sulfuric acid or sodium bicarbonate. Just keep adding and stirring until the solution turns purple. If you go too far it will turn light pink indicating the permanganate has been destroyed.
