Fokida - Main Land
Fokida - Main Land
Fokida A coarse, rough, Doric and at the same time warm hospitable land. This is Fokida (ancient Phocis). Travelling around, the local as well as the foreign visitor - traveller has the opportunity to get to know and admire a place with several natural beauties, in an alternating geomorphologic landscape and to walk on the footprints of the human presence for thousands of years. Departing from today the traveller reaches the area of myth. He will feel the human presence in every corner of Fokida, the centre "omphalos" of the Greek land and he will live its passage and route in their authentic form through mythology, history, art and civilisation. He will feel the warmth and the hospitality of its contemporary inhabitants and he will become a voluntary ambassador of its beauty, history and contribution to the world living far from its borders. Fokida (Phocis) owes its name to the mythological hero Phocus, son of Aiacus, king of Aegina who conquered the region or, according to a different version, to Phocus, son of Ornytus, king of Corinth, who conquered the region of Phocis. Its first inhabitants were Pelasgi (Pelasgians) and later on came and mixed with them Aiolians and Dorians. In the antiquity, Fokida was not geographically the same as today. It extended eastwards to Locris and Anticyra. With the formation of the Greek State, the region of Esperian Locris was added to Fokida with most important cities, the cities of Amfissa (Amphissa), ancient Myonia (nowadays Ag <b>...</b>

Delphi - Greece
Delphi - Greece
Ferries to Greece: ferriesgreece.org Delphi is both an archaeological site and a modern town in Greece on the south-western spur of Mount Parnassus in the valley of Phocis. In Greek mythology, Delphi was the site of the Delphic oracle, the most important oracle in the classical Greek world, and a major site for the worship of the god Apollo after he slew the Python, a deity who lived there and protected the navel of the Earth. Python (derived from the verb pythein, "to rot") is claimed by some to be the original name of the site in recognition of the Python that Apollo defeated (Miller, 95). The Homeric Hymn to Delphic Apollo recalled that the ancient name of this site had been Krisa. His sacred precinct in Delphi was a panhellenic sanctuary, where every four years, starting in 586 BC (Miller, 96) athletes from all over the Greek world competed in the Pythian Games, one of the four panhellenic (or stephanitic) games, precursors of the Modern Olympics. The victors at Delphi were presented with a laurel crown which was ceremonially cut down from a tree in Tempe by a boy who re-enacted the slaying of the Python (Miller, 96). Delphi was set apart from the other games sites because it hosted the mousikos agon, musical competitions (Miller, 95). These Pythian Games rank second among the four stephanitic games chronologically and based on importance (Miller, 96). These games, though, were different from the games at Olympia in that they were not of such vast importance to the <b>...</b>

Delphi | Oracle of Apollo - Navel of the World Delphi stands high on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, in the heart of Phocis at the crossroads of important routes of the ancient world. It is one of the most famous cult sites in Greece, renowned throughout the ancient Greek world and beyond as the sanctuary of Apollo and the seat of his oracle. It was at the end of the Mycenaean period that Apollo, an Olympian God and guarantor of universal harmony, is supposed to have overcome the old underworld deities. A hymn attributed to Homer tells how, after his birth on Delos , Zeus' son came to Delphi, killed the snake Python with his bow and arrow and in accordance with divine law, he went into exile for eight years to atone for the killing of the snake and on his return he took his place, becoming the god Python who gave oracles through the intermediary of the Pythia. A festival comprising of dramatic and lyric contests was held in the sanctuary theatre, and the stadium was home not only to the athletic games, but also to musical events. The archaeological site is divided by a national road. Above the road is the sanctuary of Apollo, the theatre and stadium, and oppsoite is the gymnasium and the sanctuary of Athena Pronaia.
