Politburo
A politburo /ˈpɒlɪtˌbjʊəroʊ/ is the executive committee for a number of (usually communist) political parties.
Names
The term "politburo" in English comes from the Russian Politbyuro (Политбюро), itself a contraction of Politicheskoye Byuro (Политическое бюро, "Political Bureau"). The Spanish term Politburó is directly loaned from Russian, as is the German Politbüro. Chinese uses a calque (Chinese: 政治局; pinyin: Zhèngzhìjú), from which the Vietnamese (Bộ Chính trị), and Korean (정치국, 政治局 Jeongchiguk) terms derive.
History
The very first politburo was created in Russia by the Bolshevik Party in 1917 to provide strong and continuous leadership during the Russian Revolution occurring during the same year. The first Politburo had seven members: Lenin, Zinoviev, Kamenev, Trotsky, Stalin, Sokolnikov and Bubnov. During the 20th century, nations that had a politburo included the USSR, East Germany, Afghanistan, Czechoslovakia and China, amongst others. Today, there are five countries that have a communist politburo system (China, North Korea, Laos, Vietnam and Cuba).

We now know the seven members of the new Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, China's ultimate authority, led by CPC General Secretary Xi Jinping, who is core of the Central Committee and of the whole Party.
To understand China, we should get to know the six other members, including the four new members, and understand their backgrounds.
They have much in common: all have post-graduate degrees, with a diversity of majors — law, economics, engineering, literature — several have management degrees; all began at grassroots levels, working their way up the political-administrative ladder; five of the seven have run provinces or major municipalities, each the equivalent in population size and GDP of independent countries.
I have two overarching observations. First, each of the members has deep expertise and long experience in running critical sectors of the Chinese government. Second, the group is politically coherent. In light of Xi's concerns — he highlights immense risks, grave challenges and arduous tasks — it is a team that he can trust.
In the spirit of full disclosure. I have known three of the seven members personally for years, in fact, for 16 to 19 years. With my long-term partner, Adam Zhu, I have had private meetings, conducted interviews, worked on projects — many are in the public record.

China is a country of 1.4 billion people, run by a single council of seven. The Politburo Standing Committee represent the pinnacle of power for those in the Chinese Communist Party.
Endowed with amazing power by Deng Xiaoping, the PSC as it is called sets the big public policy decisions for the party and thus the country. Those who are selected to join its ranks control massively important portfolios such as the economy, propaganda and more. Little is known about their working processes. Even less is known about their working dynamic.
In this explainer video, we lay out what is publicly known about this group of powerful men. We look at the committee’s current members, why it exists, and what is known about who gets on. The wait is over. The rumors are history. We now know the seven members of the new Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, China's ultimate authority, led by CPC General Secretary Xi Jinping, who is core of the Central Committee and of the whole Party.
To understand China, we should get to know the six other members, including the four new members, and understand their backgrounds.
They have much in common: all have post-graduate degrees, with a diversity of majors — law, economics, engineering, literature — several have management degrees; all began at grassroots levels, working their way up the political-administrative ladder; five of the seven have run provinces or major municipalities, each the equivalent in population size and GDP of independent countries.
I have two overarching observations. First, each of the members has deep expertise and long experience in running critical sectors of the Chinese government. Second, the group is politically coherent. In light of Xi's concerns — he highlights immense risks, grave challenges and arduous tasks — it is a team that he can trust.
In the spirit of full disclosure. I have known three of the seven members personally for years, in fact, for 16 to 19 years. With my long-term partner, Adam Zhu, I have had private meetings, conducted interviews, worked on projects — many are in the public record.

A politburo /ˈpɒlɪtˌbjʊəroʊ/ is the executive committee for a number of (usually communist) political parties.
Names
The term "politburo" in English comes from the Russian Politbyuro (Политбюро), itself a contraction of Politicheskoye Byuro (Политическое бюро, "Political Bureau"). The Spanish term Politburó is directly loaned from Russian, as is the German Politbüro. Chinese uses a calque (Chinese: 政治局; pinyin: Zhèngzhìjú), from which the Vietnamese (Bộ Chính trị), and Korean (정치국, 政治局 Jeongchiguk) terms derive.
History
The very first politburo was created in Russia by the Bolshevik Party in 1917 to provide strong and continuous leadership during the Russian Revolution occurring during the same year. The first Politburo had seven members: Lenin, Zinoviev, Kamenev, Trotsky, Stalin, Sokolnikov and Bubnov. During the 20th century, nations that had a politburo included the USSR, East Germany, Afghanistan, Czechoslovakia and China, amongst others. Today, there are five countries that have a communist politburo system (China, North Korea, Laos, Vietnam and Cuba).
