This month the world is learning about the ongoing famine in the Horn of Africa, where about 12 million people have been hit by the worst drought in almost 60 years. Australia has pledged more than $11 million in aid. It's heart-wrenching to see malnourished children in refugee camps in Kenya with tubes in their noses to feed them because their hungry mothers cannot.

Senator Hanson-Young asked AusAID in writing on 13 February 2011:


A recent report by the World Bank has described the situation in PNG in relation to family planning as "a National Emergency", noting that family planning coverage in PNG is approximately only 20 per cent of married couples and that there is an estimated unmet need of 44 per cent of married women who would like access to family planning. As family planning is one of the two most cost effective interventions for reducing PNG's high MMR what is the Australian aid program, as the largest bilateral donor to PNG, doing to address MDG 5 and the critical unmet need for family planning?

Government fails to cut ties with torture unit

The Australian Greens have criticised the Government for failing to take action in response to allegations an Indonesian unit supported by Australian authorities has used torture against peaceful protestors.


On November 4 this year Greens legal affairs spokesperson, Senator Scott Ludlam, called on the Government to stop funding Detachment 88, an Indonesian ‘counter-terrorism' unit that has been linked to a series of human rights abuses.

Urgent action needed on Burma's humanitarian crisis

The Australian Greens have called on the Federal Government to do everything it can to help the 20,000 Burmese refugees being forced back into Burma by the Thai Government.


"Australia is considering boosting the aid it sends to the Thai-Burma border where thousands of people are seeking refuge. We should bring forward this aid funding now to partner organisations in the area, rather than waiting for the emergency to get any worse," said Australian Greens Senator Scott Ludlam.


Pakistan disaster calls for more aid: Brown

The massive flood disaster in Pakistan warrants more response from the Labor and Coalition leaders, Greens Leader Bob Brown said in Adelaide today.

"The United Nations is calling for up to $1 billion in assistance for the 20 million affected Pakistanis, 300,000 of whom now face a cholera epidemic, but so far the Australian Government has donated $10 million," said Senator Brown.
