Greens Leader’s statement on the Canberra convoy

Media Release | Spokesperson Bob Brown
Sunday 21st August 2011, 3:52pm

"Some might call the predicted thousands of trucks descending on Canberra ending up as hundreds (ABC, 21/8/11) a ‘flop', but these Australians have every right to a peaceful presence on the parliamentary lawns," Greens Leader Bob Brown said today.

"It seems like the prime qualification to be there is to be angry about something - these are Abbott's angry people," Senator Brown said.

"But it seems their views on some issues are fairly shorted sighted, very ‘me-now'."

"The number of angry people in Canberra tomorrow will increase much more than the numbers of truckers arriving in town," Senator Brown predicted.

Carbon price package will help us all save energy and money

Media Release | Spokesperson Christine Milne
Sunday 10th July 2011, 11:48am

Securing more than $1 billion for an array of measures to help Australian householders, businesses and industry save energy and an unambiguous commitment to seek agreement from the States for a national energy efficiency scheme are very welcome outcomes of the MPCC agreement to put a price on pollution announced today.

"The best response to rising energy prices, whether or not those price rises have anything to do with putting a price on pollution, is to save energy," Australian Greens Deputy Leader, Senator Christine Milne, said.

"Where previously almost all support for householders and business was through cash payments which, while welcome, did nothing to drive change, this package invests over $1 billion in helping the community save money and energy, giving us twice the bang for our buck."

Energy Efficiency - Office of the Renewable Energy Regulator

Estimates Transcripts | Spokesperson Scott Ludlam
Thursday 26th May 2011, 4:59pm

Environment and Communications Committee Monday 23 May 2011

Senator LUDLAM: I apologise if I cover some of the same ground that the chairman has already been addressing. I want to ask you briefly about energy efficiency as well. The PM's task group on energy efficiency recommended-this is last year-that Australia adopt an aspirational target by 2020 of a 30 per cent improvement in energy intensity, which I recognise is not the same thing necessarily as energy efficiency. But I am just wondering whether that has any bearing on the work you do and whether you think Australia might commit to any such target?

Federal and State retreat on solar a disaster for energy policy

Media Release | Spokesperson Scott Ludlam
Tuesday 24th May 2011, 12:50pm

Budget cuts by the Federal and Western Australian governments have set the solar industry back years, Greens Senator for Western Australia Scott Ludlam warned today.

"First the Federal Climate Change Minister announced the Solar Credits scheme would be phased out a year early, then $370 million was cut from the Solar Flagships program, with only two out of 52 proposed projects to receive funding under the program's first round, and then the National Solar Schools Program was cut short by two years and its funding reduced by $156 million," Senator Ludlam said.

"And this week, the WA Government slashed the State feed-in tariff for solar - the rate they pay new households who feed solar power into the grid - from 47 cents per kilowatt hour to 27 cents, less than a year after the scheme's introduction."

"After cutting the incentive for people to invest in solar for their homes, the WA Government capped the scheme so it will end once the capacity installed in WA reaches 150 megawatts. This low cap risks undermining the point of the feed-in tariff, which is to help a new energy supply system overcome barriers to market entry."

"It looks like the WA Government is determined to keep this industry down," said Senator Ludlam.

Greens WA energy spokesperson Robin Chapple MLC said "while more and more West Australians have been putting their money where their mouths are by investing in solar photovoltaics for their homes, the State and Federal Government have just pulled the rug out from under them".

"The latest Budget cuts are similar to the demolition job unleashed by the NSW government, and demonstrate why we urgently need a nationally coordinated approach which give householders and the industry long-term security about investing in renewable energy," said Senator Ludlam.

It’s not too late to safeguard a 21st century economy - Brown

Media Release | Spokesperson Bob Brown
Thursday 5th May 2011, 1:27pm

The Australian Greens will push for a sovereign wealth fund to help fund the needs of future generations, as well as seek to improve budget measures in the immediate budget cycle, Greens Leader Bob Brown said today.

"A sovereign wealth fund could underpin Australia's move into a low-carbon future, serving as a source of funding for long-term projects such as high-speed rail and metro light rail," Senator Brown said in Hobart.

Greens committed to household assistance; Energy efficiency should help further

Media Release | Spokesperson Christine Milne
Wednesday 13th April 2011, 2:08pm

The Australian Greens, like the government, are committed to helping householders through the impacts of carbon pricing. In addition, the Greens want to see sensible energy efficiency programs implemented to help householders and businesses save more money and cut pollution at the same time.

"The Greens and the government, in fact all members of the MPCCC are all on record as supporting half the revenue from pricing pollution to help householders," Australian Greens Deputy Leader, Senator Christine Milne, said.

"The Multi-Party Climate Committee is still working on the details of how this assistance will be delivered to householders, but there is complete agreement that it will be generous.

"There is also tremendous potential for householders and businesses to save more money and cut more pollution through upgrading their energy efficiency.
