It's time the two main parties told us what they really stand for.

The idea of a carbon tax has Tony Abbott's speedos in a knot. The Opposition Leader has been rabidly calling for a people's revolution to bring down the Government.

But as the flop of Mr Abbott's dismal 200-person-strong "People's Revolt" in Melbourne on Saturday starkly demonstrated (when compared with the 8000 people rallying on the other side of town in support of the tax), hysteria and mouth-frothing doesn't always muster the troops.

Thursday 10th September 2009, 11:09am

Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young says it is embarrassing that a new delegation of international water experts has visited South Australia’s Lower Lakes and Coorong to study its challenges, while the federal Environment Minister is yet to visit.

An international delegation of scientists from countries including South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States toured the Lower Lakes and Coorong yesterday as part of this week’s Global Wetland and Rivers Expert Conference in Goolwa.

“How many more international experts need to come down to our Lakes and Coorong to observe it as an ecosystem in crisis before our own Environment Minister will prioritise a visit?” asked Senator Hanson-Young.

South Australian Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young today joined the Minister for Employment Participation Mark Arbib in Melbourne for the national launch of the Local Jobs package, including more than $3.4 million in funding for five projects in South Australia.

The projects are part of the $360 million Local Jobs and community support components of the economic stimulus package, which were the result of successful negotiation between the Rudd Government and the Greens to secure the passage of the stimulus through the Senate in February.

“These projects represent five wins for South Australia – within Adelaide and the regional centres of Port Pirie and Murray Bridge – in terms of job creation and environmental sustainability,” said Senator Hanson-Young.

“Since I entered the parliament last year as South Australia’s first Greens senator, I’ve been consulting extensively with people in the Lower Lakes and Coorong area to learn from their expertise and understand what these communities are crying out for,” said Senator Hanson-Young.
