The Australian Greens say they hope a High Court challenge to the National School Chaplaincy Programme, which began today, will succeed and lead to an overhaul of the scheme.

New revelations about the problems within the National School Chaplaincy Programme by ABC-TV's 7:30 last night reinforce the need for the scheme to be overhauled, the Australian Greens said today.


"The Greens want to see the chaplaincy programme replaced with a student support programme using people with relevant qualifications to meet the needs of students," Greens' education spokesperson, Sen. Sarah Hanson-Young, said.

The Australian Greens have moved for a Senate inquiry into the need for a national figure to defend the rights and represent the voice of young Australians, according to Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young.


Yesterday Senator Hanson-Young, Greens spokesperson on Youth, reintroduced her bill to the Senate to establish a Commissioner for Children and Young People. Today she referred that bill to a committee for a Senate inquiry.


"The mark of any Government is that they will look after the most vulnerable in the community, and children are amongst the most vulnerable in any community," Senator Hanson-Young said.
