Abraham Pais
Abraham (Bram) Pais (May 19, 1918, Amsterdam, Netherlands — July 28, 2000, Copenhagen, Denmark) was a Dutch-born American physicist and science historian. Pais earned his Ph.D. from University of Utrecht just prior to a Nazi ban on Jewish participation in Dutch universities during World War II. When the Nazis began the forced relocation of Dutch Jews, he went into hiding, but was later arrested and saved only by the end of the war. He then served as an assistant to Niels Bohr in Denmark and was later a colleague of Albert Einstein at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. Pais wrote books documenting the lives of these two great physicists and the contributions they and others made to modern physics. He was a physics professor at Rockefeller University until his retirement.

He received the Medal of Honor for leading an attack on a German machine gun nest, taking 32 machine guns, killing 28 German soldiers and capturing 132 others. This action occurred during the U.S.-led portion of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in France, which was part of a broader Allied offensive masterminded by Marshal Ferdinand Foch to breach the Hindenburg line and ultimately force the opposing German forces to capitulate.

The civil war was fought in Finland from 27 January to 15 May 1918 between the forces of the Social Democrats led by the People's Deputation of Finland, commonly called the "Reds" (punaiset), and the forces of the nonsocialist, conservative-led Senate, commonly called the "Whites" (valkoiset). The Reds were supported by the Russian Soviet Republic, while the Whites received military assistance from the German Empire.

Facing political persecution, Plekhanov emigrated to Switzerland in 1880, where he continued in his political activity attempting to overthrow the Tsarist regime in Russia. During World War I Plekhanov rallied to the cause of the Entente powers against Germany and he returned home to Russia following the 1917 February Revolution. Plekhanov was hostile to the Bolshevik party headed by V.I. Lenin, however, and was an opponent of the Soviet regime which came to power in the fall of 1917. He died the following year. Despite his vigorous and outspoken opposition to Lenin's political party in 1917, Plekhanov was held in high esteem by the Russian Communist Party following his death as a founding father of Russian Marxism and a philosophical thinker.

Sir Martin Ryle (27 September 1918 – 14 October 1984) was an English radio astronomer who developed revolutionary radio telescope systems (see e.g. aperture synthesis) and used them for accurate location and imaging of weak radio sources. In 1946 Ryle and Vonberg were the first people to publish interferometric astronomical measurements at radio wavelengths, although it is claimed that Joseph Pawsey from the University of Sydney had actually made interferometric measurements earlier in the same year. With improved equipment, Ryle observed the most distant known galaxies in the universe at that time. He was the first Professor of Radio Astronomy at the University of Cambridge, and founding director of the Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory. He was Astronomer Royal from 1972 to 1982.

World War I was a military conflict centered on Europe that began in the summer of 1914. The fighting ended in late 1918. This conflict involved all of the world's great powers, assembled in two opposing alliances: the Allies (centred around the Triple Entente) and the Central Powers. Even today every one knows of Tarzan but how many have read the book? Gordon Griffith (1907-1958) was big in his day and had been acting in short films for children. Griffith was already an experienced actor when, at age seven, he got his first acting role as a regular character in the Little Billy serials. Mack Sennett of Keystone Studios cast Griffith in many of his slapstick features, where he eventually earned supporting roles in Charlie Chaplin films, including Tillie's Punctured Romance. His big break came with the role of young Tarzan, in the 1918 film Tarzan of the Apes. He was required to do his own stunts, such as climbing trees, swinging from vines, and interacting closely with a chimpanzee. Griffith also has several nude scenes in the first half of the film, making him one of the first pre-teens to appear on screen naked. Marion Harris (1896 - April 23, 1944) was an American popular singer around 1920. She was the first widely known white singer to sing jazz and blues songs. Born Mary Ellen Harrison, probably in Indiana, she first played vaudeville and movie theatres in Chicago around 1914. She was spotted by dancer Vernon Castle, who enabled her entrance into the New York theatre scene where she debuted in a 1915 Irving Berlin revue titled Stop! Look! Listen!. In 1916 she began recording for Victor Records, singing a variety of songs such as "Everybody's Crazy 'Bout the Doggone Blues, But I'm Happy", "After You've Gone", "When I Hear that Jazz Band Play", her biggest success "I Ain't Got Nobody", and "A Good Man Is Hard to Find", later recorded by Bessie Smith. In 1920, after the Victor label would not allow her to record WC Handy's "St. Louis Blues", she joined Columbia Records where she recorded the song successfully. Sometimes billed as "The Queen of the Blues", she tended to record blues- or jazz-flavoured tunes throughout her career. Handy wrote of Harris that "she sang blues so well that people hearing her records sometimes thought that the singer was colored". Claude Debussy (1862-1918): "La cathédrale engloutie"
The composer Claude Debussy needs little introduction. As a pianist, he was noted for his avoidance of the crisp, dry and articulated style which typified French pianism of the nineteenth century. His style of playing was simple, highly tone-conscious and completely uncluttered by over-expressive angst. This piece is number ten in the first book of Préludes. The recording is a piano roll recording made by Debussy for Welte in 1913 (just three years after the work was composed). The piano rolls for Welte are amongst the most accurate we have, conveying the original performed dynamics, attack and pedalling rather faithfully, and when a good roll is played on a properly conditioned piano, the problems of dubious rhythmic bumpiness which infect many roll playbacks can vanish. This rendition seems as fine as we could hope for. Debussy makes important changes to the music here, doubling the tempo when bars are notated in 3/2 (the prevailing tempo being 6/4).

The Holt 75, No. 3362 shown here, has four cylinders, 7-1/2-by-8 inch bore & stroke gasoline engine, turns over at about 550 RPM, generates 75 horse power at the belt and 50 hp at the draw bar, and weighs about 12 tons. Manufactured at Stockton, California, about 1918, it was bought from Brown Bros., Williams, California, in September of 1967. The bearings, pistons, and tracks were all in excellent shape. Three of the four cylinder heads had to be replaced due to internal corrosion from alkaline water. The big 56-gallon reserve water tank underneath the platform was removed and a smaller tank within the channel iron frame was installed. A new 75-gallon gasoline tank was also installed. This tractor was used for harvesting wheat, and working fields in the Eastern Oregon area. At one time tractors like these were heavily used in areas like Eastern Oregon because of their superior performance on hills and soft ground. It was donated to the Antique Implement Society by Ted Lamm and Family. It is now owned by Carl Kirsch, St. Paul, Oregon, where it is stored, and Li'l Al Herman, newly installed president of the Western Steam Fiends Association, Portland, Oregon. Der Umsturz entstand aus der Niederlage: Im August war das deutsche Heer geschlagen, der Erste Weltkrieg verloren. Es ist der Anfang der deutschen Demokratie - doch ihr stehen schwere Zeiten bevor: Reparationszahlungen an die Sieger, Hyperinflation, aber auch Umsturzversuche von rechts und von links. The Mighty HMS HOOD 1918-1941
HMS Hood was the pride of the Royal Navy.To all intents, HMS Hood was considered to be one of the most powerful battlecruisers afloat in World War Two. However, the Hood suffered from one major flaw -- she did not have the same amount of armour as the Bismarck. She was one of four Admiral-class battlecruisers ordered in mid-1916 under the Emergency War Programme. Construction of Hood began at the John Brown & Company shipyards in Clydebank, Scotland, on 1 September 1916. She was launched on 22 August 1918 by the widow of Rear-Admiral Sir Horace Hood a great-great-grandson of the famous Lord Hood for whom the ship was named and who was killed while commanding the 3rd Battlecruiser Squadron and flying his flag in HMS Invincible - one of the three battlecruisers which blew-up at the Battle of Jutland. After fitting out and trials, she was commissioned on 15 May 1920, under Captain Wilfred Tomkinson, CB and became flagship of the British Atlantic Fleet's Battle Cruiser Squadron. She had cost £6025000 to build. With her conspicuous twin funnels and lean profile.HMS Hood was widely considered a very graceful warship. On May the 24th 1941, the two titans located each other. At 05.52 AM on the 24th May 1941 Hood opened fire on Bismarck.Two minutes later,DKM Bismarck responded to Hood's gunfire and the Battle of Denmark Strait began.
