The Shame!

Well, there we have it. The Channel 4 Political Award for the most inspiring person in UK politics for 2005 goes to Jamie Oliver. What a bunch of navel-gazing, imaginationally challenged saps we are. I couldn't decide between George Galloway and Shami Chakrabarti, so I used two email addresses and voted for them both. Apparently he's got onto Africa now, and fair fucks if he can use his platform to support the cause, but I do wonder if this isn't going to turn into something like Jamie's lessons to Oxfam workers on how to turn EU surplus milk powder into fillet mignon, with a wild herb salad, of course.

I'm depressed.

I quite enjoyed the way in which Oliver's involvement with the school dinners campaign exposed the effects of the PFIsation of our education infrastructure.

Oh for sure, children's nutrition is an important issue, but I don't remember the tone of the programme's being at all critical of The Holy Market's influence in schools; not just regarding food. It was all about how, with just a bit more money, the job would be a good un. Never mind that as soon as there's a profit to be made, the next thing to happen, as sure as night follows day, is ways will be found to shave micropence off the costs and sell advertising space. This will keep happening until we have 'corporate healthy' ~ all the appearance of a proper meal without any of the nutrition, branded and at a fraction of the cost. Wankers!

I'll not wade into Oliver's posturing though. I'm an intellectual, but i cannot be bothered to change my vocabulary from its native North + 'street' in my normal speech and there are times when i deliberately use it as a disarming device. Whatever, he's probably no worse than me.

But school meals is a bit low on the list of priorities I'd say, when compared to meals per se, war, torture and errosion of civil liberties.

You quit then Pp? Haven't read you for a bit, i'll be over soon. Well done! I'll see what i can do re: funny.

To his credit Jamie Oliver's utilisation of TV to further his agenda is the sort of thing Galloway probably has wet dreams about.

Oh aye Kid, and I'm not coating the lad off either. It's the British public I'm calling small minded for not realising that there are actually far more important issues going on than a minor celeb getting something done which is bloody common sense.

edjog, one beneficial side effect to your recent hiatus in blogging activity is that regular readers have the opportunity to browse your previous posts in more depth...which I find is often a requirement to get the full meaning of your thoughts...hope to see you active in this sphere again and soon!
