Are bloggers journalists? Great question. It depends on how you like your news. Inverted pyramid with a slew of sources or a first-person narrative? Updated-by-the-minute or an after-the-fact-analysis? Blog posts usually fall into the latter categories — first-person narratives with a focus on analysis. Like this. Some might say bloggers have become the new “fourth estate” by taking up the slack for a faltering media, or even calling out traditional journalists for failing to do their job well. Sure, blogging is often more haphazard and less polished than traditional media, but just about any blogger can be published — making the humongous-and-growing blogosphere one of the most democratic forms of journalism ever to exist. (But yes, we know: Veracity can vary. That’s why we recommend using this handy list of tips to evaluate a source’s credibility.)

Steam Introduces In-Game Trading
Bits 'n' Bytes Gaming: Videogame News, Reviews, Previews, Editorials & More!

Pimp My Steam A feature that may be of interest to some Steam users is entering beta as we speak. Valve is adorning its service with a feature that will allow users to trade certain goods with each other in-game, called, simply enough, Steam Trading. Currently available only in Team Fortress 2, but soon reportedly making its way into Portal 2 and several as-yet-unnamed third-party games, Steam Trading will allow you to trade items with others without leaving your game. Also, “gift” games themselves can be traded amongst users; if a game was purchased or attained as a bonus copy, then it can be gifted to another Steam user. To that end, Valve is adding a new option to the Steam store, where you can designate a purchased game as a gift that you’d like to retain for trading. [Source: GamesIndustry.biz]

BART Officials Blocked Cell Phones During Transit Protest
CBS Sacramento

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Transit officials said Friday that they blocked cellphone reception in San Francisco train stations for three hours to disrupt planned demonstrations over a police shooting. Officials with the Bay Area Rapid Transit system, better known as BART, said they turned off electricity to cellular towers in four stations from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday. The move was made after BART learned that protesters planned to use mobile devices to coordinate a demonstration on train platforms. “A civil disturbance during commute times at busy downtown San Francisco stations could lead to platform overcrowding and unsafe conditions for BART customers, employees and demonstrators,” BART officials said in a prepared statement. The statement noted that it’s illegal to demonstrate on the platform or aboard the trains. BART said it has set aside special areas for demonstrations. The American Civil Liberties Union questioned the tactic. “Shutting down access to

Intel Ultrabook

Only the other day Intel announced that US$300 million would be funded towards the production of the Ultrabook. It seems that the Ultrabook could be here in time for the Christmas holiday season. Intel recently said, “Ultrabook devices will deliver a highly responsive and secure experience in a thin, light and elegant design at mainstream prices.” We can assume that mainstream prices would be around the US$1000 mark, however that can not be made certain yet. It is likely the Ultrabook will compete directly with tablet devices and Apple’s MacBook Air.

CBS Pittsburgh

BUTLER TOWNSHIP (KDKA) — The Butler County Animal Control Officer told KDKA-TV a Butler Township man will be cited next week for harboring a dangerous dog. Brian Hindman had four adult pit bulls and seven pit bull puppies in his home, violating a township ordinance which allows only three dogs per household. Hindman is facing charges after one of his pit bulls attacked a neighbor’s Chihuahua last week and mauled her. The dog, named Daisy, had to be put down. [worldnow id=6149096 width=385 height=255 type=video] At the time of the attack, Daisy’s owner, 10-year old Joey Hershberger, was walking her near his home. “I couldn’t move because I was in shock and then the pit bull came running after Daisy and I tried to bend down to get Daisy, but the pit bull got her, like a chew toy, and it was horrible,” he recalled. “My son could have lost his life over this, it was my dog, but it could have been my son,” Janine Hershberger, the boy’s m

Open Postcard to a National News Site
Postcards from the Underworld

Dear National News Site, I regret to inform you that due to some radical and ridiculous policies now in place in the Underworld, I will no longer be allowed to keep myself informed of the goings on of the lovely planet Earth. Through some absurd and unfounded thoughts of personal worth, I had actually believed being intelligent and informed to be a great asset to the Underworld.  However, as I have been informed, I am not being paid to think independently, but instead, am expected to both subscribe to and practice a complacent hive mind akin to ants, or bees.  Being an informed and contributing member to society is not in my job description, notwithstanding the acute relevance to my position with the Underworld.  I am deeply apologetic for any confusion this may have caused you. It has been brought to my attention that I am not being paid to think for myself, nor to use the education imbued upon me by great centres of post-secondary education.  I believe this effectively absolves me fr

Angry Couples Confront Wedding Photographer Who ‘Stole’ Their Memories
CBS Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — CBS2 Investigative Reporter David Goldstein first reported on wedding photographer Alan Brent Carruth in 2007. Scores were suing him over what they called shoddy work. Some couples never received their photos at all. Some got their pictures three, four and five years after their ceremonies were held. Carruth was to be sentenced Friday for eight counts of grand theft. But not before some of the couples got to get a few things off their chest. Today, many of those couples confronted Carruth in a Los Angeles courtroom. And their anger was palpable. [worldnow id=6148790 width=420 height=315 type=video] Jennifer Autajay saw her wedding photos for the first time in court today. Five years after her marriage. “My brother just recently got married,” she cried, “and we look at his album. Our son asks, ‘Mommy, daddy, where are your pictures?’ What do you tell a 4-year-old boy?” And Autajay was not alone in telling Carruth exactly what she t
