The Documentary Hypothesis (Bible) 1 of 3
This will be one of the last videos I'll be uploading to this channel. The documentary hypothesis is easily as widely accepted among theologians as the theory of evolution is among biologists or the theory of relativity is among cosmologists. It provides the answers for many of the more troubling aspects of the Old Testament such as the doublets, triplets, out of sync timelines and events, discrepancies over numbers and years etc. Contrary to what Christian fundamentalists claim, it actually makes the bible much more sensible while lessoning your grip on its small (and often incorrect ) details and increasing your grip on the Savior. I highly recommend Richard Elliott Friedman's now classic book on the subject--"Who Wrote the Bible".

The Documentary Hypothesis - an introduction
The Documentary Hypothesis - an introduction
The Documentary Hypothesis (DH) is a scholarly framework that seeks to explain the compilation of the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Hebrew Bible -- Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy) as an editing together of several disparate sources, generally known as J, E, D, and P. This framework specifically contradicts the traditional conservative view that Moses was the author of the Pentateuch. The DH is based on textual analysis of the Pentateuch, and as such is inherently independent of other lines of evidence often considered in Biblical studies. It should be noted that other lines of evidence, such as archaeological evidence, are consilient with the DH. The DH may eliminate Moses as the author of the Torah. Some even argue that no one has ever found a book that followed one of these separations (A book of J, for example) but we do not have the originals of any book in the Bible and little to no knowledge of who wrote most of it. Therefore, I see this as a non-issue. It does solve many other problems scholars and skeptics have with the Old Testament, such as, the apparent contradictions, doublets and triplets, and the many places where the time line of events gets muddled up. For a Christian the good outweighs the bad because when the Torah is separated into J, E, P, and D documents all of these doublets, triplets, contradictions, errors, and time line issues go away. That's a pretty powerful argument for a Christian with an open mind. What does it ...

Bible Secrets (1/8) - Archeological findings of Israelites and the documentary hypothesis.
Part one of the NOVA's "Bible's Buried Secrets" which I've edited so it'll be as short as possible without leaving out any important stuff. (Please note the links below for more information). The film itself presents the latest archeological scholarship from the Holy Land to explore the beginnings of modern religion and the origins of the Hebrew Bible, also known as the Old Testament. This archeological detective story tackles some of the biggest questions in biblical studies: Where did the ancient Israelites come from? Who wrote the Bible, when, and why? How did the worship of one God - the foundation of modern Judaism, Christianity, and Islam - emerge? Part 3 - My Response to Who wrote the Bible www.youtube.com A Survey of Old Testament Introduction By Gleason Archer pp. 149, 150 The Ras Shamra tablets (1400 BC), which contain a large amount of Ugaritic literature, render the Wellhausen post-exilic concept void. Many of the technical sacarificial terms of Leviticus were discovered in far removed Canaanite-speaking Ugarit (1400 BC). Such P terms as: 1) ishsheh - "offering made by fire" 2) kalil - "whole burnt offering" 3) shelamin - "peace offering" 4) asham - "guilt offering" Archer is correct in concluding that "these terms were already current in Palestine at the time of Moses and the conquest, and that the whole line of reasoning which made out the terminology of the Levitical cultus to be late is devoid of foundation." www.amazon.com The antiquity of Hebrew writing and literature By Alvin Sylvester Zerbe Need we marvel that the prophets (who often quote from memory contain only a few direct references to Deuteronomy?". On the Documentary Hypothesis
Some thoughts in support of the documentary hypothesis. At times texts or books were attributed to biblical heroes but were not written my them. So the law code is attributed to Moses. Another example would be Enoch. There are many others. This also applies to the NT Correction: I said Judea but meant Judah.

I use to think religious literature was inspired until I realized just how good people were at story telling. However the literature and story telling is the subconscience of a particular people for a particular time. Biblical literature I think is better written then Herodotus.
