Watch Some Battlefield Bad Company 2 For A Good Cause
- 6 Comments
Don't Revive Me Bro, Quantic Media, Daniel "zh1nt0" Matros, and Battlefieldo have all teamed up to put together "First Person Saviors" for the benefit the Somalian Hunger Relief fund. First Person Saviors consists of representatives from each group along with a big bunch of fans, and they're all in the middle of 20 hour Battlefield Bad Company 2 marathon.

If you'd like to take part and link up with everyone (including some DICE guys) you can hop on any of the Somali Hunger Relief tagged servers provided by i3d.net. There's also a Teamspeak server up with IP: 213.133.97.214, password: "benefit". Here's a little more about the effort so you know what you're supporting:

The food crisis in Somalia continues to worsen. For the second planting season in a row, the rains have been inadequate to ensure a proper harvest. The number of people in need of food assistance in Somalia is now 3.7 million, more than a third of the country’s population. It is time for the Battlefield Community to come together to lend a hand to those less fortunate.

Donations will be taken through GamersOutreach, a video-game industry charity organization that works to use interactive entertainment in ways that improve the lives of others. They are a 501(c)(3), tax-exempt non profit that specializes in working with gamers for charity. We will then be passing on 100% of the donations to the World Food Programme in support of their Somalian relief operation.

Sponsors will be giving away some goodies at random to those who donate during the event. The sponsors include EA / DICE, Gunnar Optiks, ASTRO Gaming, Beyond Gaming, Spirit Hoods and others. If you've got a few bucks to spare you're invited to make a donation, otherwise you can just enjoy a live cast of the event in progress.

It's Official, No Battlefield 3 On Steam (For Now)
For allegedly wanting to go head to head with the Call of Duty franchise (at least in sales), EA continues to drag Battlefield 3 down a bumpy road. The internet is raging once again, this time over the official news that Battlefield 3 will not be making its way to Steam. EA's Seeson Mahathavorn spilled the beans:

EA offers games, including Battlefield 3, to all major digital download sites. In doing so, our goal is to not only reach the widest possible global audience with our games, but also to provide ongoing customer support, patches and great new content. We are intent on providing Battlefield 3 players with the best possible experience no matter where they purchase or play the game, and are happy to partner with any download service that does not restrict our ability to connect directly with consumers.

For more on our policy to offer games to any major third party download service, please read here: http://forum.ea.com/eaforum/posts/list/7372195.page

Gamers can pre-order Battlefield 3 at Origin.com as well as over 100 digital retailers worldwide. EA offers games to all major download services. Unfortunately, Steam has adopted a set of restrictive terms of service which limit how developers interact with customers to deliver patches and other downloadable content. No other download service has adopted these practices.

We are intent on providing Battlefield 3 players with the best possible experience no matter where they purchase or play their game, and are happy to partner with any download service that does not restrict our ability to connect directly with our consumers. We hope to work out an agreement where Steam can carry Battlefield 3; meanwhile, gamers can pick from the more than 100 digital retailers listed at http://www.battlefield.com/digitaldownload, or go to http://www.origin.com.

Do you guys consider this news to be a deal breaker, or are you really more interested in playing instead of the method of launch?
Amnesia: The Dark Descent Crosses Over Into Real Life
- 3 Comments
Normally I'd save this for a morning update post, but screw it it's the weekend. If you've played Amnesia: The Dark Descent you'll probably get a kick out of the video below. It shows the last known footage of "Daniel" as he attempts to get his Xbox 360 back from his girlfriend's house. Real gamers know that only a PC is worth risking your life for, brah.

The Hard Part

The Voodoo Doodoo

I've been watching as many matches as I can from QuakeCon 2011, and it's all down to the finals today, so if you haven't checked it out yet, then make sure to check it out via QuakeCon feed from Own3D.tv. There will be some duel action as well as some very tense team Dm battles, and all in the fast and ferocious land of QUAKE Live. I've always thought that Quake III Arena was the best deathmatch platform ever, and being reborn as QUAKE Live took it to a new level of skill and competition. What I'm absolutely hating about the coverage we're seeing this year is the cranking down of the texture detail in the maps so that it looks like LEGO world, or something like a Play-Doh palace. I guess it's so it's easier for people to follow the action, but with glow-skins going I don't think it's needed. Can't we have kool looking details and follow the action, or is this the glowing puck of the NHL all over again? I think I'll be bugging Jehar (one of the event shoutcasters and a friend of mine) when he gets home about this in a big way. One set of chops busted, coming right up!

Now please check out this live action TF2 flick to get your day started just right!

Since the free (time sensitive) and first DLC for Brink came out the other day (Aug. 3rd), I thought I'd look around for reviews. I actually came up with a few, so I thought I'd share it just in case you were wondering on whether to grab it or not. Remember it's only free for the first two weeks, so even if you're not sure, you should scoop it now. If you download it now for free, you keep it for free, for good.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Collector's Edition Revealed
- 19 Comments
I'm a sucker for this stuff, so consider me excited. Bethesda just announced the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Collector's Edition for PC, Xbox 360, and of course PS3. It'll be available at launch from retailers in North America, Europe, and Australia according to the press release, sounds good to me. The only catch might be the price, you'll have to fork out $149.99 in the US, €149.99 in Europe, £129.99 in the UK, and $199.99 down under (aka Australia, duh). Here's what you'll get on top of the standard game if you're willing to fork out the cash:

  • Alduin Statue. Created in conjunction with the IP Factory, this collector’s only statue stands 12” tall and is made of high quality PVC. Modeled from actual in-game 3D digital files, it showcases Alduin, the World Eater. He stands perched atop one the game’s many dragon walls that teach the player the lethal language of dragons.

  • ‘The Art of Skyrim’ Official Art Book. Featuring over 200 pages of striking, full-color illustrations, sketches and models, this stunning 9 3/8” x 12 1/8” coffee table book showcases the characters, creatures, environments, and weaponry of Skyrim. With a foreword by game director Todd Howard and commentary from Bethesda Game Studios artists, readers will be guided through the game’s iconic visual style.

  • ‘The Making of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’ DVD. This documentary DVD contains exclusive, behind-the-scenes footage, including interviews with the Bethesda Game Studios team as they take you from concept to creation and provide insights into the story, gameplay, setting, legacy of the Elder Scrolls franchise, and much more.
  • Supposedly it's also going to be "extremely limited", hopefully that's true this time around as I'm getting pretty tired of seeing so called collectables sit on shelves for 6-12 months or longer past launch.

    QuakeCon 2011: John Carmack Keynote!

Hey, hey hey, the John Carmack Keynote from QuakeCon 2011 is up and ready to fry your mind. I've also added a short flick from KJkoolguy showing some of the QuakeCon related items released for Team Fortress 2 in-game. Any headaches John gives you are not my fault BTW. Enjoy!

    Tropico 4 System Requirements
Tropico fans should be gearing up for the August 30th release of Tropico 4, and to help make sure PC players are ready to rock this new strategy title right out of the gate, we've got the hot-off-the-presses system requirements for you. Are you ready?

Tropico 4 sees you return as El Presidente, the tyrannical (or benevolent) dictator of the island paradise of Tropico. The world is changing and Tropico is moving with the times – geographical powers rise and fall and the world market is dominated by new players with new demands and offers - and you, as El Presidente, face a whole new set of challenges. If you are to triumph over your naysayers you will need to gain as much support from your people as possible. Your decisions will shape the future of your nation, and more importantly, the size of your Swiss bank account.

      Minimum Required:
    • Operating System: Windows XP SP3 (32-bit), Vista / 7 (32 or 64-bit)
    • Processor: 2 GHz Dual Core CPU
    • Memory: 1 GB RAM
    • HDD: 5 GB free hard disk space
    • Graphics: Shader Model 3.0 (Geforce 6600 or higher, Radeon X1600-Series), 256 MB, DirectX 9.0c

      Recommended:

    • Operating System: Windows Vista / 7 (32 or 64-bit)
    • Processor: 2 GHz Quad Core CPU
    • Memory: 2 GB RAM
    • HDD: 5 GB free hard disk space
    • Graphics: Shader Model 3.0 (Geforce 8800 or higher, Radeon HD4000-Series or higher), 512 MB, DirectX 9.0c

Tropico 4 will also support NVIDIA's FXAA technology on both console and Windows PC, which offers advanced anti-aliasing features with a minimal effect on system performance.

    Bastion on PC August 16th
Bastion grabbed itself lots of attention with it's Xbox LIVE Arcade release in July, and even did well at the recent E3 event, but the moment so many have waited for is drawing near, and that's the release of this action RPG title on PC! You can pre-order the game now on Steam and get yourself ready for the August 16th release. As usual I've got the full Press Release announcement for you at the Read More, and a little juice below to get your motor humming.

Featuring lush and imaginative artwork in full 1080p resolution, as well as an innovative reactive narration system that responds to players' actions in real time, the game challenges players to build a new world after a cataclysmic event shatters the land to pieces. As players journey into the wild unknown, they will confront savage beasts, forge an array of customisable weapons and gain new powers from specially-brewed spirits as they become immersed in the game's rich atmosphere.

    Planet War Beta Soon
Have you heard of the free-to-play (F2P) online strategy MMO title, Planet War? I hadn't either, but I'm all caught up now and I've got good news for those fans of this time of play, and it's all about the closed beta session that's starting up next week on August 9th. All the details can be had by hitting the read More for the full Press Release, and to get you in the mood we've got 10 fresh screenshots.

Planet War draws its inspiration from famous sci-fi novels and heroes, in hopes to break away from the traditional ancient time periods of similar games and to create a futuristic strategy game to appeal to the many sci-fi fans of the galaxy. This real-time browser game focuses on allowing the player to develop his military strategies as well as their political strategies to get ahead.

GameSpy Goes At Deus Ex: Human Revolution Mission Two Ways
    - 0 Comments
Is it best to take the Rambo, or stealthy approach in Deus Ex: Human Revolution? Gamespy's Adam Mathew asked that very question, and documented both styles of play within the same level for your viewing pleasure.

Human Revolution still offers plenty of opportunities to affect a personality transplant through your actions. Flexibility for improvisation, both through conversation and tactical approach, is still a major cornerstone of this experience. We've explored Jensen's capabilities -- once as a frontal assault specialist, again as a cybernetic ghost -- and both paths effectively led us to the same conclusion. Like its progenitor, Human Revolution makes you feel like a bona fide secret agent. You'll live and die by your own cunning, quick thinking, and daring -- and love every minute of it.
Here's Your First Look At Assassin's Creed Revelations' Multiplayer
    - 1 Comment
Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood unique multiplayer certainly got some attention last year, so much so in fact that Ubisoft is looking to refine the multiplayer experience even more in Revelations. Playstation: The Official Magazine lucked out and got the opportunity to capture some multiplayer footage from a pre-release build, and have since uploaded it to the Youtubez. Enjoy!

The Catherine Cake Is Not A Lie, Selling Well In USA
    - 15 Comments
The official AtlusUSA Twitter feed tossed up a tasty morsel of a picture yesterday, one that even delivers on the promise of cake. It's a custom Catherine themed cake that celebrates 200,000 copies sold in the US in the first week alone. For an anime / adult themed romance-puzzle game I'd say that's pretty impressive.

    blah...

Do we have any Quakecon attendees in the house? I'd love to hear how day one was on the actual floor. I've never actually gone, but I had a buddy who did back in the day and he thought it was totally rad. The new Rage trailer was pretty sweet, but the shaky cam Tribes: Ascend footage that Jube posted has managed to get me the most pumped. There's obviously still a lot to see but it's pretty clear that Tribes: Ascend looks to be a very legit Tribes title. The mechanics of skiing, jetpacking, and spinfusoring are all there, so add to my "must download for free" queue stat!

On the topic of free-to-play games, I wonder how pirates about them. I'm sure it doesn't feel quite as hardcore leeching a game when the developers actually want you to take it without spending a cent. It's almost ingenious really since it opens the door for all, eliminates the need for DRM, and sets up a situation where a game can continue to make profits off not only new customers but also existing ones for years to come. Back when I was super active in League of Legends I met more than a few people who admitted to spending hundreds of dollars on character skins. That's nuts!

Anyways, I best be moving on to the video of the day. A few guys started up a new Youtube channel called "Simple Pickup" that's dedicated to picking up chicks, and what better way to do it than with Starcraft 2 lines. Idiocracy here we come, they actually get some girls to go for it. Afterwards don't forget to check out their "How To Touch Girls" video for some cringe worthy pick-up advice moments.
