Torreón is a city and seat of the surrounding municipality of the same name in the Mexican state of Coahuila. As of 2009, the city's population was 1,000,723 with 1,000,477 in the municipality. The metropolitan population, including Matamoros, Coahuila, and Gómez Palacio and Lerdo in adjacent Durango, was 1,910,000. It is the ninth-biggest metropolitan area in the country and is one of Mexico's most important economic and industrial centers. Torreón is served by Francisco Sarabia International Airport, a small airport with flights to several cities in Mexico and the United States.

History

According to archaeological findings, the area of Torreón was populated around the 10th millennium BC.

The first Spanish mission arrived in 1566, led by Fr. Pedro Espinareda. However, the city developed only in the independent Mexican era, around a Torreón ("Big Tower") built to monitor Río Nazas's floods, in conjunction with the creation of a railroad connecting to the US border. The population grew from 200 in 1892 to 34,000 in 1910. Torreón received city status in 1907.

Geography

Torreón is situated near the southwest border of the state of Coahuila, within the Laguna region of the state. The border is delineated by the Nazas River that separates it from Gómez Palacio, Durango. The municipality covers , including much of the rural area south of the city. Its elevation is over , which is low for the Mexican interior.

The cities of Torreón, Gómez Palacio, and Lerdo compose La Laguna (The Lagoon) or Comarca Lagunera, a basin within the Chihuahuan Desert, which has much economic activity. The name of the region stems from three nearby, and now dry lagoons, the Lagoon of Mayran, the Lagoon of Tlahualilo and the Lagoon of Viesca.

The region's climate is arid. Rainfall is scarce but more prominent in summer. Flora and fauna are those common to desert habitats.

The city is south of historic San Pedro de las Colonias, where some of the Mexican Revolution fighting occurred.

Main sights

Cristo de las Noas, at , is the third tallest statue of christ in Latin America, only smaller to the statue of Christ The Redeemer in Brazil and Cristo de la Concordia in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Situated on the top of a hill, this image of Jesus with extended arms symbolising protection for the inhabitants of Torreon. The hilltop has a Catholic church and offers a view of the entire city.

Economy

The area was originally a center for ranching. With irrigation the city became an important center for support for farming and processing of cotton. The city has industries in textiles, clothing and metals processing. It is close to facilities belonging to Peñoles, a Mexican mining group, and Motores John Deere (Agricultural and Construction machinery engines) among others.

Torreón has a soccer team in the Primera División de México, Santos Laguna. The team last Championship was in 2008 of the Mexican Primera Division, the top soccer division in Mexico. The team won championships in 1996, 2001, and most recently in June 2008 when it beat Cruz Azul in the Clausura 2008 tournament to get its third Championship in team history. The team was near a demotion to a lower league in June 2007 and now in only one year has come to the top of Mexican Soccer. The team is deemed as one of the most exciting to follow and has moved into a new Stadium to meet demands of the fan base. It used to play in Estadio Corona. The new stadium is called Territorio Santos Modelo.

The city is also home to a baseball team called Vaqueros Laguna.

Torreón's professional basketball team, Los Algodoneros de Torreon, play in the Auditorio Municipal which seats approximately 3,000 people. They are members of the LNBP () which is considered to be the top basketball league in Mexico. On October 2, 2004, in a game played against Durango, Issac Gildea set the all-time scoring record in the LNBP for a single game with 61 points.

Former NFL placekicker and Super Bowl XXI champion, Raul Allegre, is a Torreon native.

Events

Cotton Fair

In September, takes place the traditional Cotton Fair, where you'll find cultural events, music, installation of mechanical games, mobile entertainment centers also of bullfighting in the old Plaza de Toros and the New Coliseum from Torreón.

On September 15, 2007, Torreón played their first 100 years as a city, for this purpose are carried out a series of cultural events during the period of September 15, 2006 to September 15, 2007, the exact day that the city turned 100 years for this event were the Governor of the State and the State Congress of Deputies to hold the event.

Laguna DrumFest

In the month of October, takes place the Laguna DrumFest, which includes some of the best drummers in Mexico and abroad. The first Laguna DrumFest took place in 2008 with the Teatro Nazas enclosure, with the participation of Javier Barrera (La 5a Estación), Giovanni Figueroa (Alejandro Fernández) and Absalom Ruiz (Absalom Music Center CEO). The Laguna DrumFest 2009 will be international and will be attended by Marco Minnemann, Johnny Rabb, Alex Gomez, Victor Loyo, Javier Barrera and others.

Sebastián Zurita (born November 22, 1986 in Mexico City, Distrito Federal) is a Mexican actor.

The eldest son of actors Humberto Zurita and Christian Bach, Sebastián Zurita Bach made his acting debut as a child, appearing in Cañaveral de Pasiones (1996) as young Pablo Montero. After several years, the then twenty-one year old actor made his television return in En Nombre del Amor (2008) as Emiliano Saenz. A year later, Zurita joined the cast of the 2009 remake of the telenovela Corazón Salvaje inspired by the original 1956 novel by Caridad Bravo Adams. He also starred in the 2009 film Ángel Caído, along with his father and younger brother Emiliano Zurita.

Maite Perroni Beorlegui (born March 9, 1983) is a Mexican actress and singer/songwriter, who is best known for starring in Rebelde, Cuidado con el Ángel and Mi Pecado. She gained international fame as a member of the Latin Grammy nominated pop group RBD. Univision named Maite Perroni as the new Queen of the Telenovelas in 2009.

Biography

Early life

Maite Perroni Beorlegui was born in Mexico City, and raised in the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco from the age of eleven months. Her father's job transferred the family there and the Perroni family stayed for over twelve years. She has two siblings, Adolfo and Francisco, who are three and nine years younger than she is.

Perroni studied acting at Televisa's Centro de Educación Artistica (CEA) in the year 2000, completing two years of a three year course.

Career

Acting career

Perroni made her acting debut in Rebelde, a remake of the acclaimed Argentinean novela Rebelde Way. She portrayed Guadalupe "Lupita" Fernández, a teenage girl from a lower class family who gets the opportunity to study at the fictitious Elite Way School. Rebelde ran from 2004 to 2006, filming 440 episodes.

Following the success of Rebelde, in 2007, Televisa released , which starred the members of RBD. The characters of the sitcom were not based on the band's characters in Rebelde, but intended to be similar to the actors' real personalities. was the first Mexican show shot entirely in high definition and ran from March 14, 2007 to June 13, 2007, and only lasted 13 episodes.

In 2008, Maite starred as the lead character in Cuidado con el Ángel, opposite William Levy. The show had great success around the world. She starred in her second leading role in Mi Pecado opposite Eugenio Siller. She was part of the third season of Mujeres Asesinas in the sixth episode called Las Blanco, Viudas along with Diana Bracho, Luz Maria Aguilar and Mark Tacher.

In 2010, Perroni was confirmed to star with her previous co-star, William Levy, in Triunfo del Amor, a remake of the Venezuelan classic Cristal.

Musical career

Perroni was a member of the popular band RBD, which was launched off of the success of the telenovela Rebelde. To date RBD has made 9 studio albums, including albums in Spanish, Portuguese and English. They have sold over 15 million albums worldwide, and have embarked on various international tours including shows throughout Latin America and Europe.

Maite composed "Tal Vez Mañana", for RBD's fourth Spanish language album, Empezar Desde Cero and sang solo on the title track for the album.

On August 8, 2008, RBD released a message telling fans that they had decided to split up. They went on one final tour, Gira Del Adios World Tour, which ended in early 2009. Perroni was absent part of the tour, due to her filming in Cuidado con el Ángel.

For her role in Cuidado con el Ángel, Perroni recorded three songs for the show called "Esta Soledad", "Separada de Ti", and "Contigo".

She recorded a song with Reik, entitled Mi Pecado, which was used as the opening song for the telenovela, Mi Pecado.

On July 17, Perroni released her new single "No Vuelvas", which will be featured on an EP she is releasing for her Brazilian Pocket Show performances, on her website MaiteMVP.com.

She recently recorded a song with Marco di Mauro called "A Partir de Hoy" which forms part of the musical soundtrack of the telenovela she is currently filming called Triunfo del Amor.

Personal life

Perroni was enagaged to Guido Laris, the musical director from RBD, but the pair split in August 2008. She is best friends with Dulce Maria, Anahi, Christian Chavez, Alfonso Herrera, and Christopher Uckermann or the RBD band. On July 2010 she was publicated her relationship with actor Carlos de la Mota,but the pair split in September 2010. In this moment Maite is in the relationship with the singer Mane de la Parra.

Maite is the Spokemodel for NYX Cosmetics. In 2007, a Barbie doll version of Perroni was released, based on her character in Rebelde.

In June 2009, Perroni announced her support for the Ecologist Green Party of Mexico. She has starred in several commercials promoting the party.

She started in commercials for Giraffas ,Pepsi ,Helato de Bonice ,Asepxia ,Teleton ,Wal Mart , Ades Cklass ,Hinds ,Pantene.

She won award `Premios juventud` for `La chica que me quita sueno` in 2009.

She was named one of the sexiest and most beautiful Latinas by magazines Quien ,OK ,H para Hombres ,Caras y Maxim.

In 2009, she topped Los 50 Más Bellos list from People en Español, sharing the front cover with Eva Longoria and Ana Bárbara. She was part of the same list in 2010. She was named `Queen of telenovelas` by her fans and Univision channel.

Johnny Rabb (born February 29, 1972 in Fairfax, Virginia ) is a professional live/studio drummer, author, inventor, and instructor.

As a Product Specialist for Roland V-DRUMS, Rabb performs around 70 international clinic dates per year. He is endorsed by several companies including: Drum Workshop, Pacific Drums and Percussion, Remo, Audix Microphones, Prologix, Blowit Fans, Drumometer, and HansenFutz. Rabb designed a series of cymbals with the MEINL company: Drumbals and Safari cymbals are part of MEINL's Generation X line. For Pro-Mark Drumstick's Autograph Series, Johnny Rabb designed his signature stick, TX7731W. Johnny Rabb has performed with artists Maynard Ferguson, Alain Caron, Frank Gambale, Larry Tagg, Tanya Tucker, DJ Hype, Hank Williams III, SHeDAISY, Deana Carter, and Mindy McCready. In 2006, Johnny Rabb and Clay Parnell formed BioDiesel, describing their intense electronic sound as "environmentally friendly Intelligent Dance Music". Johnny Rabb is the drummer for U.S.S.A., a rock n' roll collaboration with bassist/programmer/producer Paul Barker, guitarist/composer Duane Denison, and lead singer Gary Call.
