Real-Life Racing Champs Frequenting iRacing, PC MMO Racing Sim
- 0 Comments
GameSpy writes "Did you know there's a PC MMO racing simulator available right now, frequented by the likes of Dale Earnheardt Jr., Will Power, Jim Thurman and many other real world drivers?" Uhm, no sir, I had no clue TBH! iRacing is the name, and I have to show my ignorance here by saying that I likely dismissed it as an iPhone game. Alas, it turns out that it's a driving simulator that is apparently quite popular. iRacing 2.0 has just launched and apparently it's even bigger and better than ever now. There's an interview on GameSpy with all of the big wigs behind iRacing.

Europe's largest game expo takes place in Cologne this August 17-21, and ArenaNet will be bringing a brand new Guild Wars 2 demo to show off. • Sylvari and asura – Did I mention that you’ll be playing sylvari and asura characters for this high level content? Yes, for the first time, players will be able to get their hands on these unique races – believe me, they are impressive!
  • Character appearance customization – Also for the first time, you’ll be able to play around with our character appearance customization feature and control the way your character looks.
  • PvP – Last but certainly not least, we’re premiering Guild Wars 2 Player vs Player (PvP) at gamescom! PC Gamer Gives Deus Ex: Human Revolution 94%, Editor's Choice
- 22 Comments
PC Gamer's Tom Senior spilled the beans on their upcoming Deus Ex: Human Revolution review score, revealing that it has earned a very respectable 94% along with some Editor's Choice love as well. Here's a little on what you can expect out of their review when the next mag hits newsstands on August 6th.

In the huge, eight-page review Tom befriends turrets, throws vending machines off buildings, hacks into security terminals, resolves hostage situations and dismembers foes with augmented fist-chisels to conclude that Human Revolution “is absolutely the Deus Ex of our age, a genuinely worthy prequel, and a game that puts almost everything else in the genre to shame.”

Heroes of Newerth Goes Free-To-Play
Well, it's official, effective today the popular DotA inspired strategy title Heroes of Newerth will be operating under a free-to-play model. Players who supported HoN with previously paid accounts will permanently receive a special "Legacy" status, whereas new players can start with a Basic free account, and either buy or earn their way into Verified. Here's a more detailed breakdown on each acocunt type:

  • Basic – The standard, free account new players will receive upon sign up.
  • Verified – Basic accounts that have been upgraded through a show of commitment to their account, by either purchasing Goblin Coins or surpassing a certain threshold of play time.
  • Legacy – Paid user accounts that existed prior to the free-to-play model. These accounts receive a lifetime of free access to all HoN heroes and are able to play in Verified Only games, to ensure that experts and beginners are separated. Legacy accounts can no longer be purchased.
  • Until free Basic tier account holders get some play time in, or become verified via a goblin coin purchase, they'll be limited to all-pick matchmaking with other Basic level players. Ultimately this means newer players can play with newer players, and not gunk up the experienced player pool. Heroes will now have to be purchased by new players with goblin coins, but Legacy account holders can get all new heroes for free after a short wait period following release. Since new accounts will not own any heroes S2 will be revolving 15 free heroes over time, somewhat similar to what we've seen in League of Legends.

Here's S2 Games CEO and co-founder Marc DeForest on the structure change, as quoted in the official press release:

“With the transition to free-to-play we’re opening HoN up to new audiences as our players can now easily introduce the game to their friends,” said S2 Games CEO and co-founder Marc DeForest. “S2 has a serious level of commitment to our players to continuously improve both the game and their experience. With the new account types and match-making standards in place, both novice and existing players will benefit from the upgraded structure.”

“In just over a year’s time we’ve grown to be a community of 460,000 unique active players and over 90 percent of all accounts are active, which is a direct testament to the game’s quality,” said DeForest. “We have gone to great lengths to ensure that the superior experience HoN delivers will remain untouched for our loyal fan base during and after the free to play transition.”

Stealth Looks Awesome In Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Firefly Worlds Catapults Over Short Stronghold 3 Gameplay Trailer
    - 3 Comments
With all the potentially awesome games on the horizon I need to remember that Stronghold 3 isn't all that far off now. I was a closet castle builder back in the old days of PC gaming, starting with Castles 1 and 2. Wall building in Age of Empires never came close, so I'll be keeping an eye on this medieval bad boy.

    blah...
So supposedly this is the last weekend to play Battlefield 3 for those lucky few that got in on the alpha trial. I can't remember the last time I saw folks get so rabid over something honestly, which I guess we can go ahead and call a win for EA and DICE. Obviously even with all the dweebs that broke NDA there's still a lot of unknowns, most important to me is what DICE did with air combat. I think hands down Battlefield 1942 and Vietnam had the best air combat experiences in the series, everything since then has been nerf city. If air sucks in BF3 I'm going to be totally disappointed.

Speaking of air combat, DCS: A-10C Warthog has been a wild ride when it comes to my review. For the first time in a long time I'm feeling somewhat intimidated by the scale of the product I'm reviewing, it's almost like reviewing an MMO, where the gameplay actually evolves over time. The optional hardware out there is also a lot to consider, especially considering how much it can enhance the core experience. The Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog for example, absolutely epic hardware but the $500 price tag is hard to swallow for some. Regardless, it's my goal to have the review up finally before I get my hands on Deus Ex: Human Revolution, because we all know that's going to suck a lot of time up.

Before I wrap things up Jube and I were chatting about custom icon ideas for stuff like our "Read More" and "Watch Video" bubbles. Heck, ol' McBlink came up again too, even the concept of a new mascot entirely. Jube suggested McDrink, I have no idea what that guy would even look like though. Perhaps we can get her to do a little mockup for us in MS Paint.

Thanks to my brother from another mother for sending me the long lost Mortal Kombat TV sitcom pilot, aka your video of the day.

Multiplayer zombie slayer coming to PC and PSN in Q4 2011, All Zombies Must Die looks like an amusing little ditty. The game is from doublesix, the award winning developer behind Burn Zombie Burn!. Looks like a fun and action-packed game from the video, plus it's got 4-player co-op.

Nintendo Lowering Price of 3DS in US to $169.99 on 8/12/11
    - 23 Comments
Nintendo got in touch with some excellent news for those that have been waiting for sale pricing before picking up a 3DS handheld. On August 12th, 2011 the price of the 3DS will officially drop to $169.99 from the original price of $249.99. The reduction of price also coincides with some pretty big holiday games, including Star Fox 64 3D, Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, and Kid Icarus.

The announcement also comes with word that Nintendo will be rewarding the early adopters (dubbed Nintendo 3DS Ambassadors) of the 3DS hardware who connect to the eShop at least once prior to 11:59PM EST on 8/11 with free games. On September 1st Ambassadors can snag ten classic NES Virtual Console games for free from the eShop. Then later this year another ten games can be chosen from a list of Game Boy Advance virtual titles, except they'll be exclusive to the Ambassador program.

Is the price drop enough for you to finally pick one up? I've heard it's pretty slick!

SOL: Exodus Announced, Hopes To Bring Back Space Sims
    - 19 Comments
There's a new development studio in Austin, TX called Seamless Entertainment, and those guys have been working hard on a new 3D space game called SOL: Exodus. According to the press release SOL: Exodus will feature epic space battles, enormous capitol ships, hordes of spacecraft, and beautifully rendered planetary battlegrounds. Seamless Entertainment even has a couple industry veterans at the helm, specifically Dan Magaha (Firaxis Games/2K/NCsoft), and Chris Stockman, design director on the mega-hit Saints Row for Xbox 360. Here's more, from the press release.

In SOL: Exodus, players will assume the role of fighter pilot in a battle for the survival of the human race, commanding their multi-purpose tactical fighter in battles across the most recognizable landmarks in our Solar System. Together with a squadron of wingmen, they will dogfight in the rings of Saturn, engage enormous capital ships around Neptune, thwart a trap in the chaotic, intense atmosphere of Jupiter, and much more! “It’s not just a coincidence that this project is coming together in Austin, where the Wing Commander series was born back in the 1990s,” said Studio Director Magaha. “Austin has really become a hub for determined indie developers. I think we’ve got some of that maverick personality in this team; we’re just driven by the goal of making this game great.”
