Like an untouched medieval open-air museum, Suzdal was endowed with well preserved fortified castle walls, monasteries, cathedrals, and convents. After being founded in 1024 by Vladimir Monomakh, the city rose to Orthodox prominence by becoming a religious center for the region. Walking around this very picturesque town, I had the feeling every third building was a church. Priests and nuns also were omnipresent on the streets. From almost anywhere in town, one could see the onion domes of the town's many churches rising against the sheep grazed hills. This charming town also had the right ambience of a medieval village with placid streams and rolling meadows juxtaposed with livestock and chicken roaming the streets, some of which were unpaved. The combination of magnificent medieval architecture and pastoral landscape lent Suzdal a very picturesque allure. I fell in love with it the first moment we arrived into town. Suzdal (Russian: Су́здаль) is a town in Vladimir Oblast, Russia, situated northeast of Moscow, 26 km from the city of Vladimir, on the Kamenka River. Population: 11357 (2002 Census); 12063 (1989 Census). The history of the town dates back to at least the year 1024. For centuries it functioned as the capital of several Russian principalities. It forms part of the Golden Ring. Suzdal still retains the look and feel of a small village with streams and meadows everywhere nearby, and chicken and livestock a common sight on the city streets, some of which are unpaved. This juxtaposition of stunning medieval architecture with its pastoral setting lends Suzdal a picturesque charm, and in the summer artists and easels are a common sight.

Jmelissaroby's travel blog entry: "June 12th is a national holiday around here ... Russia Day (we won't tell them that they're wrong ... it's obviously Melissa Day)! It was honestly not the best birthday I've ever had, although how many people can say they were in Russia for their birthday!?!? Ryan and I are just sort of laughing it off, since we can always re-celebrate when we get to Berlin. For starters, the shower in our hotel was broken this morning! I couldn't get it to work, so I ended up stooping below the faucet (which was about bathtub-height) for like 45 minutes ... but hey, at least it doesn't flood. The hotel breakfast was interesting (read: terrible) and very flavorful (read: greasy), but I was absolutely fine with that, since I had a Cola Light (the last one in the store!) and an ice cream bar for breakfast :). Oh, and I can't forget to mention that the hotel restaurant was incredibly classy (read: shares 2/3 of it's space with the hotel's strip club)! Our first stop today was to the Suzdal Museum of Wooden Architecture, an open-air museum of wooden buildings brought from all over Russia. It's a recreation of a Russian village, so it feels a lot like visiting Colonial Williamsburg or something. Not everything is 100 percent authentic, but it's really interesting to get an idea of how a typical peasant lived, etc <b>...</b>

Emilyrose's travel blog entry: "Today was our last morning at Malinki, and we had breakfast with Sonia's family - minus Anton, who was at school - and her friend Katya, who came to say goodbye to us and decided to come to Suzdal with us for the day. We said a sad goodbye to Sonia's parents - they were so wonderful to us the entire time we were in Russia and are really adorable, wonderful people. Then we rode to Suzdal, a town about the same size as Alpena in population anyway - about 12000 people. Our tour guide spoke English well, although she spoke very slowly at first. Suzdal has what's kind of like a Russian version of Colonial Williamsburg of Virgina, in their Museum of Architecture. We saw a 19th century peasant house and the house of a well-to-do family, and a 17th century wooden church, which were all really interesting. Suzdal has 30 churches, so no matter where you look, there's onion domes! Then we walked to the Kremlin, and stopped in a cute little restored church along the way, and looked at a few of the numerous souvenir stands - it appears that Suzdal could be the souvenir capital of at least that region! Of course there was more snow on the ground - although it was finally melting in the sun. The cathedral at the Kremlin had 5 onion domes with gold stars that were supposed to be blue but looked more green, or at <b>...</b>

One of the oldest Russian towns, Suzdal was founded in 1024 as a fortress town on the Kamenka River. By the beginning of the 13th century it had become the capital of Suzdal principality and a political and religious center of Russia. But unfortunately in 1238 the town was destroyed by the Mongols under the leadership of Batu Khan and never recovered its former importance. In the 15th century Suzdal passed to the grand Duchy of Moscow. The town is fabulously rich in the unique architectural monuments of the 13th-18th centuries including ancient cathedrals and monasteries, bell-towers and churches, one and two-story wooden and brick buildings. The Kremlin, the Monastery of the Deposition of the Holy Robe, the Nativity Cathedral and the Intercession Cathedral are the most popular places of interest. Suzdal is truly a town-museum distinguished for its fidelity to ancient traditions.

Mikhail Zaprudnov, a 64-year 'garmon' player (a type of Russian accordion) was the most enjoyable part in my three-day stay in Suzdal, Russia. The town by itself is quite remarkable, it is a part of the so-called Golden Ring, but Zaprudnov's original takes on traditional Russian tunes completely swept me off my feet. Hats off to Zaprudnov. He told me he had five kids to feed, the youngest being only one year old. A man as big as Russia herself.

, Transfiguration Cathedral and Belfry]]The history of the town dates back to at least the year 1024. For centuries it functioned as the capital of several Russian principalities. It forms part of the Golden Ring. It was granted city status in 1777.
After a decline in political importance, the town rose in prominence as a religious center with numerous monasteries and a remarkable ratio of churches to citizens: at one point, forty churches for four hundred families. Today, the town operates as an important tourist center, featuring many fine examples of old Russian architecture — most of them churches and monasteries. Walking through the town one might get the feeling that every third building is a church. Although having over ten thousand residents, Suzdal still retains the look and feel of a small village with streams and meadows everywhere nearby, and chicken and livestock a common sight on the city streets, some of which are unpaved. This juxtaposition of stunning medieval architecture with its pastoral setting lends Suzdal a picturesque charm, and in the summer artists and easels are a common sight.
In March, the Suzdal tourist centre is home to the Open Russian Festival of Animated Film.
The Cathedral of the Nativity in Suzdal is one of the eight White Monuments of Vladimir and Suzdal, a World Heritage Site.
