Blogs about: News

Are bloggers journalists? Great question. It depends on how you like your news. Inverted pyramid with a slew of sources or a first-person narrative? Updated-by-the-minute or an after-the-fact-analysis? Blog posts usually fall into the latter categories — first-person narratives with a focus on analysis. Like this. Some might say bloggers have become the new “fourth estate” by taking up the slack for a faltering media, or even calling out traditional journalists for failing to do their job well. Sure, blogging is often more haphazard and less polished than traditional media, but just about any blogger can be published — making the humongous-and-growing blogosphere one of the most democratic forms of journalism ever to exist. (But yes, we know: Veracity can vary. That’s why we recommend using this handy list of tips to evaluate a source’s credibility.)

CBS Denver

DENVER (AP) – The National Weather Service says rivers in Colorado are running high with snowmelt and rainfall. Taxpayer Funds For Racist La Raza Skyrocket After After Obama Hires Its VP

Taxpayer Funds For Racist La Raza Skyrocket After After Obama Hires Its VP – Judicial Watch A Judicial Watch investigation reveals that federal funding for a Mexican La Raza group that for years has raked in millions of taxpayer dollars has skyrocketed since one of its top officials got a job in the Obama White House. The influential and politically-connected National Council of La Raza (NCLR) has long benefitted from Uncle Sam’s largess but the group has made a killing since Obama hired its senior vice president (Cecilia Muñoz) in 2009 to be his director of intergovernmental affairs. Ignored by the mainstream media, Judicial Watch covered the appointment because the president issued a special “ethics waiver” to bring Muñoz aboard since it violated his own lobbyist ban. At the pro illegal immigration NCLR, Muñoz supervised all legislative and advocacy activities on the state and local levels and she was heavily involved in the congressional immigration battles that took place in

But I did a little light reading on he beauty queen since it is our duty as citizens to educate ourselves on our country’s leaders…. - Alyssa Campanella, Miss USA 2011 - Anyway, it turns out that the former Miss California was one of only two contestants along with Miss Massachusetts to 100% support teaching evolution in schools (what’s going on with you, Miss CT?). In a preliminary questionnaire many of the contestants struggled with the question of “should evolution be taught in schools?” Most of them went with “yes but so should creationism,” and Miss Kentucky, Miss Alaska and Miss Alabama just flat out said “no.” – USA Today I knew that it was a controversial subject in the Bible belt states, but I would never in a million years have guessed

Report: Michigan Business Climate Ticks Up, Bit Still Lags
CBS Detroit

A new “economic competitiveness benchmarking report” released Monday by a group that backed many of Gov. Rick Snyder’s early economic moves finds that the state’s climate for doing business has improved. However, Business Leaders for Michigan, the expanded statewide version of the CEO group Detroit Renaissance, contends that Michigan’s competitiveness with other states requires more work. Findings of the study were unveiled Monday before a gathering of more than 300 Michigan business, civic and community leaders convened in Lansing for a half-day session specifically focused on Michigan’s position relative to key economic benchmarks. Nationally recognized experts and local business executives provided context on the measurements and insight on the steps Michigan needs to take to propel its economy forward. The annual report offers a robust assessment of Michigan’s economic position relative to other states and nations, and is used by BLM to prepare and upd

Frontier Forces Quadriplegic Man Off Plane
CBS Denver

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) – A quadriplegic Colorado man says he was humiliated after he was forced off a Frontier Airlines plane because a pilot said it wasn’t safe for him to fly. John Morris and his family were trying to board a flight in Dallas on Sunday to return home to Fort Collins. The 24-year-old Colorado State University student says he has flown Frontier in the past, using an airline seat-belt extension to secure his chest and legs to the seat. But this time the pilot refused to take off. Frontier spokesman Peter Kowalchuk said the pilot was concerned for Morris’ safety and uncertain whether the seat-belt extension could be used to restrain his legs and torso. Kowalchuk says federal rules are unclear on whether the extension can be used to restrain disabled passengers. Frontier eventually arranged for Morris and his family to take the next flight, and the pilot on that plane had no issues with transporting him. (Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press.  All Ri

Remembering Ryan: ‘Forget Jackass, Dunn Was The Dude’
CBS Philly

By now you’ve probably heard all the trending Twitter rumors and unfortunately they are true: “Jackass” star Ryan Dunn has passed away. Dunn passed away early Monday morning when his vehicle ran off the road outside his stomping grounds of West Chester. He will always be remembered for his hilarious antics with life-long friend Bam Margera — as part of the MTV Jackass franchise. But to those who knew Dunn best, he was more than just the ‘jackass’ we’ve all grown to love. Dunn was original to say the least. From his Grizzly Adams beard to his plethora of tattoos, Dunn knew how to be different and that’s what made him so likable. Yet what made him unique was his love for his family and friends. You couldn’t find a more genuine guy who just wanted to enjoy life with the people he cared about. I had the pleasure of working on several movies with Dunn. The first time I met him a few years back I thought wow, this guy is the living breathing Lebowski

Veterans and the internet: a growing community
wildly unpopular

What does the rise in social media mean for a new generation of veterans and the organizations that serve them? This story was published in all nine Straus newspapers on June 16 and 17, 2011. Jimmy Thonus is home in Pearl River, NY, after serving three seven-month deployments as a Marine in Iraq. He belongs to two veterans’ organizations – the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America – but he doesn’t have much to do with either. Although he hates computers, it’s through Facebook that he keeps in touch with his fellow Marines. “I guess technically I’m part of a post. I’ve never actually been to it,” said Thonus, 25, whose grandfather signed him up for the VFW. “I’ve stopped into a couple VFWs and had a couple beers with some of the older guys but I really don’t have time to go to the post in between work and all the other stuff.” The VFW, which peaked in 1992 with 2.2 million members, is down to 1.5 million members, although it remains one of

As Apple preps bid on Nortel patents, are they considering buying RIM or AMD or both?
MacDailyNews

[cfsp key="google_adsense_300x250"]“Friday, The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple joined the bidding war for the telephony patents put up for sale when the Canadian telecommunication equipment maker Nortel went bankrupt two years ago,” Marc Courtenay writes for Seeking Alpha. “The story claims that more than 6,000 patents are at stake, covering some of the key underlying technologies of mobile communications, including Wi-Fi, social networking and LTE, the fourth-generation wireless technology now being deployed.” Courtenay writes, “Maybe Apple’s appetite to buy and acquire is part of the reason the stock again took a hit on Friday. It spent most of the day struggling to maintain that all-important $320 per share support level. This, while things are looking grim for one of its competitors.” “Could it be feasible that Apple might be considering a way to ‘finish RIMM off’ through an investment or an acquisition? It’
