Vajdahunyad Castle

:For the castle in present-day Hunedoara, Romania, see Hunyad Castle.

Vajdahunyad Castle, or Vajdahunyad-vár, is a castle in City Park, Budapest, Hungary, that was built between 1896 and 1908, designed by Ignác Alpár. It is a copy in part of a castle in Transylvania, Romania, that is also called Vajdahunyad, though it is also a display of different architectural styles: Romanic, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque.

Originally it was made from cardboard and wood for the millennial exhibition in 1896 but it became so popular that it was rebuilt from stone and brick.

Today it houses the Agricultural Museum.

The statue of Anonymus, also displayed in the Castle court, was a chronicler in the 12th century (probably of King Béla III). He wrote the first history books on the ancient Hungarians, mostly based on legends. Superstition says that by touching his pen you will receive good luck.

It also contains a statue of Bela Lugosi, dedicating his work.

It was designed by Ignác Alpár, and derived its name from the wing facing the lake, which is an imitation of the Castle of Vajdahunyad in Transylvania, the family castle of János Hunyadi, the hero of the Turkish wars, which was built in its present form in the fifteenth century.

Take a tour of Vajdahunyad Castle in Hungary -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. It's difficult to believe that this castle was originally a cardboard and wood structure. Though Hungary's Vajdahunyad Castle looks medieval, it's actually only a little over one hundred years old. Built for an exhibit, the response was so enthusiastic that a permanent version was constructed. The castle is an intriguing blend of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architectural styles. Across from the castle is the statue Anonymous of an unidentified twelfth-century Hungarian chronicler. Vajdahunyad Castle, now one hundred and two years old, is the location of Budapest's Agricultural Museum.

While visiting Budapest, I went on the 26th September 2008 to see their central park, and its attractions One of the attractions is the Vajdahunyad Castle. It happened to host a fair. In the fair there was also a musical show of folk music and dances. Here is a sweet and young dancing girls group, who performs several dances. Since I do not speak Hungarian I could not understand the detail of the group when they introduced it. I will be glad if one of the viewers will comment the name and the origin of the group.

    Ice Rink
    Ice Rink
The largest open-air ice rink in Budapest is located in a beautiful setting, at Városliget (City Park) just behind Heroes Square and next to Vajdahunyad Castle. From the end of October, the small lake is converted into an ice rink and becomes a popular scene among young people and families. Music and all other ingredients eg. mulled wine is provided to create a pleasant atmosphere. Changing rooms, lockers and skate rental are at the visitor's disposal. Open: Mon Fri: 9:00 am 1:00 pm and 4:00- 8:00 pm, Sat Sun: 10:00 am 2:00 pm and 4:00 8:00 pm The boating lake At springtime the ice rink disappears, the basin is filled with water and a calm lake becomes part of the scenery of the City Park. With the Vajdahunyad castle in the background it is one of the most picturesque views in Budapest. It is worth to take a walk around the lake or even to rent a boat or a paddle-boat for a romantic half an hour.
    Fisherman's Bastion
    Fisherman's Bastion
The Castle District, the River Danube embankments and the whole of Andrássy út have been officially recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and it would indeed be a shame to miss them out. And whilst up in the Castle District a visit to the Matthias Church and perhaps to a museum as well can be heartily recommended. A look out at the panoramic view of the whole city from the Fishermens Bastion is an absolute must! In Pest, arguably the most important sight is Andrássy út. As far as Kodály Körönd both sides are lined with large shops and flats built close together. Between there and Heroes Square the houses are detached and altogether grander. Under the whole runs continental Europes oldest Underground railway, most of whose stations retain their original appearance. Heroes Square is dominated by the Millenary Monument, with the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in front. To the sides are the Museum of Fine Arts and the Palace of Arts, and behind City Park opens out, with Vajdahunyad Castle on its own island in the little lake, and further off the Zoo, the Circus and the Fun Fair.

Creator clip EM The Hunyad Castle (Romanian: Castelul Huniazilor or Castelul Corvineştilor, Hungarian: Vajdahunyad vára) is a castle in Transylvanian Hunedoara, present-day Romania. Until 1541 it was part of the Kingdom of Hungary, and after the Principality of Transylvania. It is believed to be the place where Vlad III of Wallachia (commonly known as Dracula) was held prisoner for 7 years after he was deposed in 1462. The castle is a relic of the Hunyadi dynasty. In the 14th century, the castle was given to John Hunyadi Serb, or Sorb by Sigismund king of Hungary as severance. The castle was restored between 1446 and 1453 by his grandson John Hunyadi. It was built mainly in Gothic style, but has Renaissance and Baroque architectural elements. It features tall and strong defense towers, an interior yard and a drawbridge. Built over the site of an older fortification and on a rock above the small river Zlasti, the castle is a large and imposing building with tall and diversely colored roofs, towers and myriad windows and balconies adorned with stone carvings. As one of the most important properties of John Hunyadi, the castle was transformed during his reign. It became a sumptuous home, not only a strategically enforced point. With the passing of the years, the masters of the castle had modified its look, adding towers, halls and guest rooms. The gallery and the keep - the last defense tower (called "Ne boisa" = Do not be afraid), which remained unchanged from Iancu de ...

A little rain could not dampen our enthusiasm as we enjoyed the beautiful Varosliget in Budapest with our Magyar friend. We first admired the Vajdahunyad Castle and the bronze statue of Anonymous, the royal scribe who wrote the "Gesta Hungarorum". A short walk through the park brought us to the Edwardian-era grandeur of the Szechenyi Baths and the Art Nouveau-style Budapest Zoo. Photos taken by me on June 23rd, 2009.
    Gesta Hungarorum
    Gesta Hungarorum
On September 2009, P4Photographys director, went to Budapest on a short business trip. After 3 days wading through vintage prints, rare books and Hungarian photographers exhibitions, he took the last afternoon off and headed to the Széchenyi Medicinal Bath. He stayed there for three hours, relaxing on the sulfurous waters supplied by thermal springs. When he left, he passed the chess players that use to sit on the benches outside the baths building and crossed the Kós Karoly promenade, the road that splits Varosliget Park in two, to look at the Vajdahunyad Castle and touch the pen in the Statue of the Anonymous (were Erdős and his colleagues used to meet and discuss mathematics). A few steps from the statue he noticed a 4GB memory stick on the floor that was almost completely covered with dirt. He picked it up, put it his pocket, and walked Kós Karoly until he reached Hősök tere (square). There, he took a last glance at the Millennium Monument, at the heroes (hősök) surrounding Archangel Gabriel. Gabriel did not blow his horn and it did not seem like he was going to do it anytime soon. Luis breathed a sigh of relief and entered the subway station. He took the train heading in the downtown direction, left at Deak Ferencz tér and then walked to the Central Kavehaz, in the corner of Karolyi Mihály utca and Irányi utca, where, as usual, he asked for a cappuccino. Now embedded in Central Kavehazs peaceful ambiance he changed the memory stick in his camera by the one he found ...
