Listen to the full audiobook: http://easyget.us/mabk/30/en/B00LV47SXQ/book The creation of a new history of the Church at the beginning of the third millennium is an ambitious but necessary project. Perhaps nowhere is it needed more than in re-describing the Church's development its life and its thinking in the period that followed the end of the 'early Church' in antiquity. The cultural, social and political dominance of Christendom in what we now call 'the West', from about 600-1300, made the Christian Church a shaper of the modern world in respects which go far beyond its religious infleunce. Writing with her customary authority, and with a magisterial grasp of the original sources, G R Evans brings this formative era vividly to life both for the student of religious history and general...

Examining eighteenth-century religious thought in its sophisticated national and social contexts, the author relates the narrative of the Church to the rise of religious enthusiasm pioneered by Pietists, Methodists, Evangelicals and Revivalists, and by important leaders like August Hermann Francke, Jonathan Edwards and John Wesley. He places special emphasis on attempts by the Spanish, Portuguese, ...

Tauris, 2015) by Virginia Cox (Chair of the Department of Italian Studies, NYU) The author in conversation with Stefano Albertini (NYU) and Christopher Celenza (Johns Hopkins University) The extraordinary creative energy of Renaissance Italy lies at the root of modern Western culture. In her elegant new introduction, Virginia Cox offers a fresh vision of this iconic moment in European cultural history, when – between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries – Italy led the world in painting, building, science and literature. Her book explores key artistic, literary and intellectual developments, but also histories of food and fashion, map-making, exploration and anatomy. Alongside towering figures such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangel...
The Kenyon Institute is pleased to host a lecture by Dr. Jamie Allinson on his forthcoming book The Struggle for the State in Jordan: The Social Origins of Alliances in the Middle East (IB Tauris, 2015). Dr. Allinson's book, based on original research in Jordan, addresses the question of the instability of international alliances in the Middle East. Dr. Allinson argues that the source of this instability lies in the expansion of global capitalism in the region. Drawing out the unexpected way in which Jordan’s Bedouin tribes became allied to the British Empire in the 20th century, and the legacy of this for the international politics of the Middle East, Social Origins of Alliances challenges the existing views of the region. Offering both a novel argument in International Relations theory...

Dismantling Iraqi army "Huge U.S. Strategic Mistake" Expert Published on Feb 1, 2015 The rise of the so-called Islamic State (IS) in vast swathes of territories in Syria and Iraq, and the US-led military response to it, have introduced another complex dimension to an oil-rich but already very volatile Middle East. The old correlation of forces in support of maintaining the status quo, especially following the Iranian revolution more than 35 years ago, has been changing. A set of new alignments and realignments along multiple regional fault-lines, including sectarian divisions and geopolitical rivalries at different levels, has come to redefine the region and possibly change its traditional political and territorial contours. IS has confronted all the regional states, from the Islamic Rep...
