GBTV #505 (HD) | The Google Glitch
This morning started like a typical morning for me ... with a google search. I searched for Bruce Williams, a broadcaster who does a business advice show and got the results I'd respect along with warnings on every search result. The warning says, "This Site May Harm Your Computer." I went to a different Mac and did a search. Same thing. I used different search words and phrases. Same thing. I did a search from different browsers and from a PC and got the same warning message. Next step twitter. I asked if anyone else is getting the error and it appears to be happening to everyone on every search. I decided to go live on ustream as we tried and figure out what wass happening. Then we heard from Google. They explained that it was human error: What happened? Very simply, human error. Google flags search results with the message "This site may harm your computer" if the site is known to install malicious software in the background or otherwise surreptitiously. We do this to protect our users against visiting sites that could harm their computers. We work with a non-profit called StopBadware.org to get our list of URLs. StopBadware carefully researches each consumer complaint to decide fairly whether that URL belongs on the list. Since each case needs to be individually researched, this list is maintained by humans, not algorithms. We periodically receive updates to that list and received one such update to release on the site this morning. Unfortunately (and here's the human ...

Twitter Routing All Links Through New Anti-Phishing Service (Social Blade)
For quite some time now there has been a huge phishing spam problem ocurring on twitter and this week twitter finally stepped up and implemented something to ward off further attacks. Phishing basically is what it sounds like. An attacker casts out their bait, a DM to you trying to trick you to click on a link, but if you fall for it and click the link they usually confuse you by showing you a twitter login page again. If you enter your user and password there you just gave the attacker your info to twitter and they can DM all your friends. After the attacker has collected enough logins and passwords to satasify themselves they start DMing your friends spam. What Twitter has done to fix this is simular to what Firefox and some other browsers have done for a while now. Firefox periodically checks google and stopbadware.org for a list of blocked sites so when your browser tries to go to one of those it pops up a warning to you. While twitter hasnt disclosed where it gets its data from it appears theyve implemented a simular feature. Whenever you send a DM it gets checked and if its found to be bad they wont allow it to be sent. Also to prevent links which have been emailed to you (if you have DM alerts turned on) from hurting you later on if they are determined to be bad twitter is re-shortening them so they get passed through its system so you will see them being sent as twt.tl.
