Carillon and museum at Bok Tower Gardens
This is a video of the carillon museum and the 60 bell singing tower at Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Whales, FL. It's 205 ft tall, contains a 60 bell carillon manufactured by John Taylor Bellfounders, Ltd. in Loughboro, England. The bell weights vary from 16 pounds to 11 tons (1 ton=2000 lbs) for a total weight of 63 tons. The tower itself is built on land that was owned by Edward Bok who commissioned the building of the tower and surrounding gardens. The tower was built from 1927-28 and was dedicated by President Calvin Coolidge in 1929. The tower was designed by Milton B Medary and the metal work was done by renowned metalworker Samuel Yellin. The hourly chimes tolled 13 at 2pm on this day only to remember the original thirteen colonies as this day is the 4th of July, our Independence Day. The piece that followed is Habanera by Georges Bizet. The scaled down display version of the door tells of the creation of the earth all the way down to the bottom of the door where it shows the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden. Edward Bok's grave is located on the north side of the Bok Singing Tower, right in front of the large brass door.

Travel with John Journey to beautiful Bok Tower in Lake Wales, Florida. Bok Tower Gardens (also known as Bok Mountain Lake Sanctuary and Singing Tower) is a botanical garden and bird sanctuary, located north of Lake Wales, Florida, United States. It consists of a 250-acre garden, the 205-foot tall Singing Tower with its carillon bells, Pine Ridge Trail, Pinewood Estate, and a visitor center. The tower is built upon Iron Mountain, one of the highest points of peninsular Florida, estimated to be 295 feet above sea level. It is a National Historic Landmark that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The gardens began in 1921 when Edward W. Bok, editor of the popular women's magazine Ladies Home Journal and his wife, Mary Louise Curtis Bok, who would found the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia in 1924, were spending the winter beside Florida's Lake Wales Ridge and decided to create a bird sanctuary on its highest hill (298 feet above sea level). Bok commissioned noted landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. to transform what then was an arid sand hill into "a spot of beauty second to none in the country". The first year was spent digging trenches and laying pipes for irrigation, after which soil was brought to the site by thousands of truck loads and plantings began. The Olmsted plan included the planting of 1000 large live oaks, 10000 azaleas, 100 sabal palms, 300 magnolias, and 500 gordonias, as well as hundreds of fruit shrubs including ...

The renowned Bok Tower Gardens is one of Floridas original tourism venues. Located on the one of the highest points on the Florida peninsula, Bok Tower Sanctuary is a national landmark. There are 128 acres of gardens designed by Frederick Law Olmstead Jr. and a bell tower housing one of the worlds great carillons. Edward Bok never forgot the words of his grandmother Make the world a bit better or more beautiful because you have lived in it. Bok indeed left his mark on the world with his magnificent singing tower. When designing the tower, inspiration was drawn from the Gothic towers and churches of Europe, but it was Edward Boks love of nature that inspired the towers decorative motifs. Although it was constructed to house the Carillon, it is the centerpiece for the beautiful gardens also. In modern day Florida Bok Tower Gardens draws thousands of nature, historic and music enthusiasts. There are also many family-friendly garden areas which give children the chance to learn about the gardens while playing in a vine-covered arbor or observing butterflies. www.boktowergardens.org Unravel Travel TV http

Garden Travels - Bok Tower / Ceanothusmaybe
Garden Travels - Bok Tower / Ceanothusmaybe
Go along with Dave as he visits a Garden Sanctuary for people and birds that thrive around an elegant Singing Tower: Historic Bok Sanctuary. Edward Bok had a vision to create an excellent garden to provide sanctuary from the busy daily world. Even in the late 1930's and early 1940's visitors flocked to the new garden and the shining Carillon Tower. Today, the gardens of the Historic Bok Sanctuary and Pinewood Estate are more beautiful than ever and the tower "sings" each day in live concerts performed by the Carillonuers perched high in its 280-foot- tall Art Deco spire. Then it's off to discover an American Original in Blue, Ceanothus, with David Fross. David Fross is a renowned expert on native and Mediterranean region plants and which ones are perfectly suited for American gardens. He has been observing, collecting and growing Ceanothus for years and has been instrumental in bringing these stunning blooming shrubs to gardens all across the country and the world. In this episode of Garden Travels, Dave's favorites include: Flowering Almond and Narcissus.
