Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks: NAACP Centennial Convention
THE NAACP MOURNS THE PASSING OF CIVIL RIGHTS GIANT AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND CEO EMERITUS DR. BENJAMIN LAWSON HOOKS. Hooks was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1925. He graduated from Howard University in 1944 and then joined the army shortly thereafter where he earned the rank of staff sergeant. After completing his army duty, Dr. Hooks enrolled in DePaul University College of Law after no Tennessee law school would admit him. Upon receiving his law degree, Hooks returned to Memphis to practice law and he joined the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. In 1965 he became Tennessees first black criminal court judge and in 1972 Richard Nixon appointed him to be one of the five commissioners of the FCC. On November 6, 1976, the NAACP Board of Directors elected Hooks as Executive Director where he served until 1992. Dr. Hooks spoke at the NAACPs Centennial Convention in New York last July and left the NAACP with words to live by: Lets fight on until justice runs down like waters and righteousness as a mighty stream. Lets fight on until there is no down-sizing, until there is no glass ceiling. Lets fight on until God shall gather the four winds of heaven; until the angel shall plant one foot on the sea and the other on dry land and declare that the time that has been will be no more. Fight on, until the lion shall lie down with the lamb. Fight on, until justice, righteousness, hopes equality and opportunity is the birthright of all Americans.

THIS SUNDAY MORNNG with Rev. Benjamin L. Hooks
This is classic Memphis television... A brief middle '90s excerpt from the long running TV show "THIS SUNDAY MORNING" by Greater Middle Baptist Church of Memphis, Tennessee. This clip shows the great American civil rights leader, Rev Ben Hooks, in service behind the pulpit at his beloved church, shortly before his retirement from full-time preaching. For many years this hour long show was a traditional part of every Sunday morning for thousands of mid-south viewers. Here's your chance to catch a glimpse of that old time religion, Memphis-Style! Ronnie Williams' organ playing can be heard throughout the service and, at one point, you can see him as Rev. Hooks comes by. Ronnie was, and is, very involved with the music and ministry of this church. He also wrote and performed the theme song for this show. For more info, photos and videos please visit Ronnie William's music site at www.RonnieWilliamsMusic.com

Cohen Honors the Life of Dr. Benjamin Hooks
With the news of Dorothy Heights passing today, we have lost two significant civil rights leaders in less than one week. Today, Memphians will have the opportunity to pay their respects to Rev. Benjamin Hooks during a viewing at Greater Middle Baptist Church where he preached for 52 years. Yesterday, many Detroit residents were able to pay their respects during a viewing at Greater New Mount Moriah Baptist Church. A native Memphian, Rev. Hooks was one of the golden throated warriors of the spoken word and one of the few silver tongued giants of oratory. Dr. Benjamin Hooks was born in 1925 and was the fifth out of seven children born to Robert B. and Bessie Hooks. His grandmother, Julia B. Hooks was the second African-American female college graduate in the nation after graduating from Berea College in Kentucky in 1874. Following in her footsteps, Dr. Hooks attended LeMoyne College in Memphis where he studied pre-law. He continued his studies at Howard University in Washington, DC and at DePaul University Law School in Chicago, Illinois. After graduating from college, Dr. Hooks served in the Army during World War II and had the job of guarding Italian prisoners who were able to eat in restaurants that were off limits to him. He found this experience to be humiliating and it deepened his determination to do something about bigotry in the South. Dr. Hooks returned to Memphis after being discharged at the end of the war with the rank of Staff Sergeant. Dr. Hooks began ...

GRITtv: Remembering Dorothy Height, Benjamin Hooks
Dorothy Height and Benjamin Hooks both passed away recently; as trailblazing leaders in the movements for civil rights, they both worked to make a better world not just for African-Americans, but for everyone. Height was a feminist and an outspoken activist for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, and Hooks led the NAACP through a transitional period in its long history. Joining us via Skype from Washington, DC to remember Drs Height and Hooks and to talk about the next steps in progressive movements is regular guest Bill Fletcher Jr. of Black Commentator and the Center for Labor Renewal. GRITtv with Laura Flanders brings participatory democracy onto your computer screen and into your living room, bridging the gap between audience and advocates.
