Though no Al Bowlly, Sam Costa was a popular British dance-band vocalist in the 1930s. But he shot to stardom as the Cockney RAF batman in the BBC wartime radio sitcom 'Much-Binding-in-the-Marsh' (catchphrase 'Good morning, sir, was there something?'.
I was only a few months old when this record was released, so the double-entendres would have gone right over my head. Not so the BBC, who banned it from the airwaves.
Sung by (and possibly written by) Leslie Sarony. The original limericks were quite filthy, so this song was quite daring for 1932. No doubt everyone knew them and pretended they didn't.
