This 13-episode documentary was literally produced in the nick of time, as many of those interviewed would be deceased in a few short years - their wonderful memories lost forever. The film was originally presented in two parts, separated by an intermission. The film chronicles the relationship of two families in Civil War and Reconstruction-era America: the pro-Union northern Stonemans and the pro-Confederacy southern Camerons over the course of several years. The assassination of President Abraham Lincoln by John Wilkes Booth is dramatized. According to Variety, The Birth of a Nation, which was filmed on a budget of an estimated $110000, is the highest-grossing film of the silent film era, with earnings of approximately $10 million and is notable for its technical innovations. However, the film was, and remains, highly controversial due, for instance, to the portrayal of African American men (actually white actors in blackface) as sexually aggressive towards white women and the portrayal of the Ku Klux Klan (whose founding is dramatized) as a heroic force. MacArthur's agent, Richard Lewis, said the actor died in Florida of "natural causes," but no direct cause was specified. In a career that spanned more than four decades, MacArthur was most recognized for his role as detective Danny "Danno" Williams on "Hawaii Five-O," which aired from 1968 to 1980. Episodes often ended with detective Steve McGarrett, the lead character, uttering what became a pop culture catch phrase: "Book 'em, Danno." Jack Lord, who starred as McGarrett, died in 1998. MacArthur quit the role of McGarrett's sidekick a year before the program's final season. "Quite frankly, I grew bored," he explained on his website. "The stories became more bland and predictable and presented less and less challenge to me as an actor." "Hawaii Five-O," one of the longest running crime shows in TV history with 278 episodes, was shot on location in the Hawaiian islands. It was the first Hawaii-based national TV series. In the old days, an American pastime for children was writing to the Hollywood stars to ask for an autographed photograph. My mother and her sisters, Mary Ann and Charlotte, must have kept the Post Office busy during the 1920s, as they amassed quite a collection of movie star photos! Part of the thrill was that the pictures were autographed, although I wonder how many were "autographed" by an assistant using a rubber stamp! The three girls had fun trading pictures with their friends. As my mother was the youngest, eventually she was given the entire collection when her older sisters tired of the hobby. To this day, the collection of pictures resides in the same box in which it was placed about 80 years ago, rarely seeing the light of day since then. I find these mementos from a vanished era fascinating and believe that Youtube is a good place to share them. From time to time I plan to accompany other 1920s tunes with photos from the collection. Charlie Murray was my great-grandfather's cousin. I am in possession of several letters he wrote to my father's mother in the 1930s. Charles Murray (22 June 1872 -- 29 July 1941), was an American film actor of the silent era. He appeared in 283 films between 1912 and 1938. Born in Laurel, Indiana, Murray was a circus clown before joining up with partner Ollie Mack as vaudeville's "Murray and Mack". Best known as Kelly in "The Cohens and the Kellys" movie series, Charlie Murray's career stretched back to silent films. One of the original Keystone Cops. Made 132 films from 1912 to 1938. Born in 1913, he became one of the first canine film stars, earned $150 a week for his master and was very popular with audiences. A high energy companion to the slapstick antics of his human costars, he was a natural for early comedy shorts. FRIEDRICH HOLLÄNDER (1896- 1976), born in London. He was the son of composer Victor Holländer. Educated at the Berlin Conservatory. By the age of 18 he had become an associate conductor at the Prague Opera House. After studying in Berlin, he composed music for productions by Max Reinhardt and became involved in cabaret and wrote music for the film, The Blue Angel (1930). He left Nazi Germany and emigrated to the United States of America where he wrote the music for over a hundred films, including Destry Rides Again (1939), A Foreign Affair (1948), and Sabrina (1954). Fake Chaplin - BILLY WEST - The Candy Kid (1917) Billy West (September 22, 1892 - July 21, 1975) was an American film actor and director of the silent film era. Born Roy B. Weissburg in Russia, West adopted his professional name some time after emigrating to America. He appeared in many short films, first in Apartment No. 13 in 1912, however he was to become best known as a Charlie Chaplin imitator, despite Chaplin not making his first film appearance until 1914. Oliver Hardy often appeared as his antagonist in a role reminiscent of those of Eric Campbell's in Chaplin's shorts with Mutual Films. He later moved in to Directing/Producing, first himself and occasionally Ethelyn Gibson (famous for her early film verions of Winnie Winkle).

Bois was born in Berlin and began acting in 1907, becoming one of the film world's first child actors, with a role in the silent movie Bauernhaus und Grafenschloß. In 1909 he played the title role in Der Kleine Detektiv ('The Little Detective'). Bois' acting career spanned eighty years, a longer period than can be claimed by any other actor. His final performance was in 1987's Der Himmel über Berlin (in English: Wings of Desire). Bois performed in theatre, cabaret, musicals, silent film and "talkies" over his career as an actor. In 1934 Bois was forced to leave his home for the United States because he was Jewish, where he found work on stage on Broadway. By 1937 he had found his way to Hollywood, and began acting in American pictures, the best-known of which was Casablanca (1942), with a single speech warning about pickpockets as "vultures everywhere". After World War II Bois decided it was safe to return to Germany, which he did in 1950. He finished out his life and career in Germany, first in the East, and finally in the West. Seven Chances is a 1925 American comedy silent film directed by and starring Buster Keaton, based on a play written by David Belasco. Additional casts members include T. Roy Barnes, Snitz Edwards, Ruth Dwyer, and others. The film also stars Jean Arthur, a future 1930s screwball actor, in an uncredited supporting role as a telephone operator. The film's opening scenes were shot in early Technicolor, and this rare color footage still survives on the Kino International special edition DVD print.
