The Life That Swings
by Bogdan Mohora for Narratively's "Behind the Music" week.

Nearly every day for the past thirty years, Maurice McIntyre has taken the subway from his studio apartment on St. Ann’s Avenue in the South Bronx to play his saxophone on the Grand Central and Union Square train platforms. On good days, his saxophone case fills with $40 to $60 in small bills and loose change. At seventy-seven years old, Maurice hasn’t even entertained the thought of not working.
“I’ll work till I die,” said Maurice, who suffered a heart attack three weeks ago at his home and has been hospitalized since.
At the height of his career in the 1960s and ‘70s, Maurice led his own band, recorded and toured internationally. Then jazz clubs began closing their doors and opportunities disappeared with them.
“Musicians don’t have the option of retiring,” says Marianne Pillsbury, communications and musician programs manager for Jazz Foundation of America, a nonprofit that provides relief and assistance to jazz and blues musicians. “The single biggest issue musicians everywhere face is finding work. Finding the next gig.”
In an average year, the Jazz Foundation of America helps around seven hundred musicians and their families by providing or connecting them with services, ranging from crisis relief to social, medical and legal resources. It also gives musicians, like sixty-nine-year-old piano player Roy Meriwether, a weekly venue to jam with other musicians.

Kyle Abraham/Abraham.In.Motion: PAVEMENT PROMOTIONAL VIDEO Created by Dancing Camera
“Men call the shadow prejudice, and learnedly explain it as a natural defense of culture against barbarism, learning against ignorance, purity against crime, the ‘higher’ against the ‘lower’ races.”—W.E.B. Du Bois
In 1991, I was fourteen and entering the ninth grade at Schenley High School in the historic Hill District of Pittsburgh. That same year, John Singleton’s film, Boyz N The Hood was released. For me, the film depicted an idealize “Gangsta Boheme” laying aim to the state of the Black American male at the end of the 20th century. Twenty years later and more than ten years into the 21st century, I am focused on investigating the state of Black America and a history therein.
Reimagined as a dance work and now set in Pittsburgh’s historically black neighborhoods, Homewood and the Hill District, Pavement aims to create a strong emotional chronology of a culture conflicted with a history plagued by discrimination, genocide, and a constant quest for a lottery ticket weighted in freedom.
As two rivaling neighborhoods, their histories run parallel. Both experienced a cultural shift in the 1950s when jazz legends like Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington performed at local theaters and Billy Strayhorn spent most of his teenage years. Over a century later, those same theaters are now dilapidated. And the streets that once strived on family run businesses and a thriving jazz scene now show the sad effects of gang violence and crack cocaine.
The creation and presentation of Pavement is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts in cooperation with the New England Foundation for the Arts though the National Dance Project. Major support for NDP is provided by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, with additional support from the Community Connections Fund of the MetLife Foundation. Support from the NEA provides funding for choreographers in the early stages of their careers.
Developed in part during a Choreographic Fellowship at the Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography at Florida State University, Pavement was also created during a residency provided by The Joyce Theater Foundation, New York City, with major support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation as well as during a residency provided by The Joyce Theater Foundation, New York City, with major support from The Rockefeller Foundation’s NYC Cultural Innovation Fund and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund.
The creation of Pavement was made possible, in part, by the Danspace Project Commissioning Initiative with support from the Jerome Foundation. Pavement was developed, in part, during a creative residency at the Bates Dance Festival.
Harlem Stage is the lead commissioner of Pavement through its WaterWorks program. WaterWorks is supported by Time Warner, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Plectrum by Ben Sherman presents SS13 - Jazz Life
The Jazz scene of 1960’s America was a time of sharp styles and new sounds, and an era that influenced music and fashion in equal magnitude. The impact of which can still be felt today, and here, it forms the foundation of our Spring ’13 collection; Jazz Life.
Inspired by the book of the same name, the collection looks at the influence of this East Coast scene, bringing together both Jazz inspired styling and at the same time, the attire of artisans across the pond back in Britain. With the spirit of collision becoming a hallmark of the Plectrum Collection, this clash of opposing styles creates a new silhouette and inspired design detail, lending the collection a more contemporary sensibility.
Print makes a big statement for Spring. A considered colour palette and a crafted approach to pattern has created a refreshing take on ikat, resulting in an ikat-camo. Utilised on a four pocket overshirt and tee, as well as appearing as accents on a jacket and polo, this is the season’s statement fabric.
Shirting plays on the print theme, with art deco inspired geometrics and dobby detailing layered onto pinstripes and checks. Sculpted hems, engineered features and new collar shapes highlight the attention to detail given to the collection.
Sharply tailored, single breasted herringbone jackets sit with relaxed trousers, whilst less structured, single button, double breasted styles are paired with shorts, presenting a less formal approach to a mature silhouette.
A refined herringbone fabric has been washed down, creating garments with an authentically aged appearance. Used within classic pieces such as the Parka and bomber jacket, finished with leather trims, a clean and considered artisan’s jacket completes the offering. Elsewhere, a suede bomber in burnt orange provides the perfect option for summer layering, and a bonded linen chambray mac keeps the showers at bay with style.
