"The Empty Child" is the ninth episode of the first series of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who, which was first broadcast on 21 May 2005. It was the first episode written by Steven Moffat, who later became the showrunner and main writer of the series in 2010 following Russell T Davies' departure, and was directed by James Hawes. "The Empty Child" is the first of a two-part story, which concluded with "The Doctor Dances", on 28 May.
In the episode, alien time traveller the Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) and his companion Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) arrive in 1941 during the London Blitz, where they find that the city has been terrorised by a strange child in a gas mask repeatedly asking for his mother.
The episode marks the first appearance of John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness, who would become a recurring character and star in the Doctor Who spin-off series Torchwood. "The Empty Child" was watched by 7.11 million viewers in the UK. The two-part story has been cited by critics amongst the best of the show, and it won the 2006 Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form.
Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme produced by the BBC from 1963 to the present day. The programme depicts the adventures of the Doctor, a Time Lord—a space and time-travelling humanoid alien. He explores the universe in his TARDIS, a sentient time-travelling space ship. Its exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. Accompanied by companions, the Doctor combats a variety of foes, while working to save civilisations and help people in need.
The show is a significant part of British popular culture, and elsewhere it has become a cult television favourite. The show has influenced generations of British television professionals, many of whom grew up watching the series. The programme originally ran from 1963 to 1989. There was an unsuccessful attempt to revive regular production in 1996 with a backdoor pilot, in the form of a television film. The programme was relaunched in 2005 by Russell T Davies, who was showrunner and head writer for the first five years of its revival, produced in-house by BBC Wales in Cardiff. The first series of the 21st century featured Christopher Eccleston in the title role and was produced by the BBC. Series two and three had some development money contributed by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), which was credited as a co-producer.Doctor Who also spawned spin-offs in multiple media, including Torchwood (2006–2011) and The Sarah Jane Adventures (2007–2011), both created by Russell T Davies; K-9 (2009–2010); and a single pilot episode of K-9 and Company (1981). There also have been many spoofs and cultural references to the character in other media.

"The Doctor Dances" is the tenth episode of the first series of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who, which was first broadcast on 28 May 2005. It is the second of a two-part story and saw Jack Harkness, played by John Barrowman, join the Doctor as a companion. The first part, "The Empty Child", was broadcast on 21 May. Together with "The Empty Child", it won the 2006 Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form.
Continuing from the cliffhanger of "The Empty Child", the Doctor, Rose, and Jack are cornered in the hospital by the "empty children", patients who all have gas masks fused to their faces. The Doctor fakes being an angry parent and loudly tells the patients to go to their rooms. It works, and the patients retreat to their beds. At the same time, young Jamie, the index case of the "epidemic", retreats from his older sister Nancy. The trio go to the hospital room in which Jamie was first taken, where the Doctor realises that the child is still learning what it can do and soon will be too powerful to stop. Suddenly realising that he had just sent the child "to its room" which happens to be the room that they're standing in, the Doctor turns around and finds Jamie standing in the doorway.
The Doctor is in the Blitz hit London of World War II. A mysterious young boy in a gas mask is searching for his mummy. But his presence terrifies Nancy and her family. Nancy claims it is all her fault as she is actually Jamie's mother, which she admits in front of the child. As they hug, the nanogenes identify Nancy's DNA as being his mother's and reverse Jamie's transformation so that they resemble each other; the rest is done to all the others who had been converted. Jack captures the bomb that would have fallen on the site and the Doctor and Rose rescue him before it explodes, inviting him on the TARDIS. "It has been said, 'There are thousands hacking at the
branches of evil,
To one who is striking at the roots.'
But who would that be?
There must be someone willing to look into the 'eye of
hell,'
Yet all who try...die.
From the mewling, grief stricken throng steps forward one
dauntless soul
Willing to strike at the looks of evil.
