Werner Drexler's Go-Go-Sound ('66+)

This is Scat 'n Guitars, German Library at its Best, between 1966 and early 70s. Wonderful scats in very nice compositions mainly done for radio stations and test cards. I heard this stuff frequently in the early 70s and digged these records almost 30 years later directly from the Golden Ring Library at Frankfurt. These tracks here appear all distributed across a bunch of Drexler albums and so the compilation collects the very early Go-Go-Pearls.

In the 90s Drexler re-released extracts from his sounds on the Happy Records label. However, he didn't do so with his unique Go-Go-Sound.

More Things from 101 Strings (1967)

The spectral line representing Symphonic Big Band Sound next to Don Costa is 101 Strings' chief arranger Robert Lowden who payed tribute to the bands immediately after Costa set the standard (see below).

This wonderful collection seems to originate from the year 1967 as the number of Alshire's stereophonic release was S 5092 close to Costa's S 5055.

01 - Moonlight Serenade
02 - You Made Me Love You
03 - Song of India
04 - Serenade in Blue
05 - Goodbye

Don Costa conducts 101 Strings (1966)

Every time an orchestra of symphonic size and over tries to swing, the result is catastrophic. It just doesn't make it . . . that is, unless the orchestrations are by Don Costa.

This album proves that it is possible to pick top jazz brass and rhythm sections, put them with handpicked symphonic strings and woodwinds. The result can be fantastic . . . that is, with orchestrations by Don Costa.

Take great pop and blues standards, take night songs and soul songs, take a 125 piece orchestra, and it will swing . . . that is, with orchestrations by Don Costa.

Take the world's largest recording orchestra, the right session atmosphere, with unparalleled recording techniques, and it will swing! This album does, ask Don Costa. (from the Liner Notes to Alshire S 5055 - Swingin' Things from 101 Strings (1966))

01 - Headin' Home (Costa)
02 - Harlem Nocturne (Earle Hagen)
03 - Durango (Costa)
04 - Night Train
05 - Dansero (Hayman)
06 - Yes Oh Yes /w Chorus (Costa)
07 - Mood Indigo
08 - Spanish Harlem (Spector)
09 - That Old Black Magic
10 - Misirlou
11 - El Bronx (Randazzo)
12 - Street Scene (Alfred Newman)

Believe me, this one from the 1001 albums of the 101 Strings is terrific - as Darrell Brogdon used to say when playing Earl Hagen's Harlem Nocturne years ago (The Retro Cocktail Hour).

Bill Justis & his Orchestra (1966)

He's the composer of Raunchy from 1957.

Bill Justis primarily did arrangements for others like Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Charlie Rich, and not to forget about Dean Martin. Any credits to Justis on any LP gives it a go. This record serves a little bit of Rock'n Roll, some nice Tijuana style and a taste of Ramsey Lewis' In-Crowd. It's all in here: Twangy Guitars, Brass, Strings, and Voices. Friends of Phil Bodner's Brass Ring will be happy with these sounds. And the quality of the record is great.
  1. Guitar Boogie
  2. A Taste of Honey
  3. Walk Don't Run
  4. Harlem Nocturne
  5. Tequila
  6. Night Train
  7. Lazy River
  8. Red Roses for a Blue Lady
  9. The In-Crowd
  10. Autumn Leaves
  11. Petite Fleur

  14. Yakety Sax
With special greetings to Licorice Pizza - Just Bill @320kbps.

Hazlewoodism

One year ago Barton Lee Hazlewood left us at the age of 78. There's lots of memories in my mind since I discovered his voice when I was a young boy listening to the radio. A means of a very special relationship with vocals and instrumental sounds featured by numerous female voices and the orchestra of Billy Strange.

These montages span the years, from 1966 when Hazlewood for the first time presented The Shacklefords on Capitol's Silver Platter Show, to 2006 when he did his last recording.

You'll hear some interesting radio cuts in these tracks, so don't miss this commemoration.

Kiss all the pretty ones goodbye
Give everyone a penny that cry
You can throw all my tranquil' pills away
Let my blood pressure go on its way
For my autumn's done come
My autumn's done come.

Miss You Lee.

Chor und Orchester Kai Warner (1976)

This is Denmark, a view from the White Cliffs of Moen, called Moen's Klint. A very nice island in the sun with a capital city called Stege where an old islander owns a thrift store selling used books and records. As you may have noticed so far from the picture, I took a long sought after Kai Warner with me.

To my opinion, Werner Last's most prolific period was around 1975 when he produced The Road to Philadelphia, the Salsoul Sensation and this one which was totally unappreciated by radio stations. Especially, the wonderful arrangement on Lady Madonna was merely noticed by his brother Hans Last who re-arranged this tune later for his Beatles tribute in the 80s.

And now enjoy Kai Warner's unmistakable mix of massive Strings, Brass, electric guitars, moog, and his group of
Belgian Singers:

Dance to the Beatles @320kbps
  1. Can't Buy Me Love
  2. Michelle
  3. Eight Days a Week
  4. Let It Be
  5. Hey Jude
  6. Get Back
  7. A Hard Day's Night
  8. Yesterday
  9. Lady Madonna
  10. We Can Work It Out
  11. With a Little Help from my Friends
  12. Penny Lane
Soloist: Benny Andersen, Electric Guitar,
Produced by Werner Last in Hamburg, May 1976

With special greetings to Lounge Legends.

Entrance to the Kriminalmuseum

Giving my special kudos to THXJay for his invaluable work on the inimitable crime lounge and many many thanks to all my friends from the instrumental universe sharing all the wonderful sounds with us.

These are Killer Tunes compiled by HPMasters for this year's summer holiday season. Enjoy.

Pathfinder Space Sounds ('55-'59)

There's my own montage of two intact vinyl albums from the cutting edge of Space Age Pop. Awesome sounds from an early age of technology development. Incredible arrangements by Walter Schumann and Russ Garcia to complement one another.
