Shut down of Melbourne Analogue Television Melbourne Victoria. Featuring Features Eric Pearce, (Test Transmissions from 1956) Ron Casey Happy Hammond Graham Kennedy Greg Shackleton 7 News (Balibo 5 news journalist) Prince Phillip opening olympic games Melbourne Brian Naylor Various 7 themes over the past 56 years After almost 60 years of mostly reliable service, today marks the final switch off of analogue television in Australia. From around 9.00am (local time) today the Melbourne and Remote Central and Eastern Area markets will have their analogue signals switched off — marking the end of a 13-year transition from analogue to digital television across Australia. Today's switch off will affect the Melbourne analogue transmissions of ABC1, Seven (HSV), Nine (GTV), Ten (ATV) and SBS One, and Remote Central and Eastern transmissions of ABC1, Southern Cross (QQQ/ITQ), Imparja (IMP) and SBS One. According to the latest Digital Tracker survey, in the period July to September 2013, around 95 per cent of Melbourne households had converted at least their main television set to digital. In the Remote Central and Eastern Area market the conversion rate is around 87 per cent. hsv7opensThe Melbourne switch-off brings to an end over 57 years of analogue transmission — with HSV7 and ABV2 officially launching in November 1956, just in time for the Melbourne Olympic Games. GTV9 was officially opened by Victorian Governor Sir Dallas Brooks (pictured above) in January 1957 but had been conducting test transmissions towards the end of 1956 and had also broadcast coverage of the Olympic Games. With the excitement of an Olympics on home soil and broadcast on three channels, it was little surprise that Melbourne had far exceeded Sydney in the rate of television ownership. By the end of 1956 it was estimated that 5 per cent of Melbourne households owned a TV set, compared to one per cent in Sydney. atv0_testprograms_0001Melbourne became the first three commercial station market in Australia with the launch of ATV0 in August 1964. Despite a hefty investment by transport tycoon Reg Ansett the channel took several years to gain a hold in the Melbourne market, largely due to the unusual channel frequency which required adjustment of older sets or antennas not equipped for Channel 0. In January 1980, ATV0 was essentially relaunched as a new channel when it converted to ATV10. Later that same year multicultural television made its debut when Bruce Gyngell launched Channel 0/28 (now SBS). SBS ceased transmission on the Channel 0 frequency in January 1986, thereafter broadcasting solely on the UHF band.- published: 09 Dec 2013

Mal Walden's final broadcast on TEN Eyewitness News
Mal Walden's final broadcast on TEN Eyewitness News
This is a clip of Mal Walden's final broadcast on Wednesday 4 December 2013. Mal Walden is an Australian journalist and television news presenter based in Melbourne, who is currently the longest continually serving face on Australian Television. He is currently the main presenter of Melbourne's Ten Eyewitness News from Monday to Wednesday. After joining radio station 3DB, Walden moved to television to sister station HSV-7 in early 1970 as a reporter. One of his first assignments at HSV-7 was to go to Darwin to report on the devastation of Cyclone Tracy which ripped through the tropical city on 25 December 1974 (Christmas Day). In 1979, Mal took over the role of chief news presenter at HSV-7, replacing Brian Naylor who had moved to rival station GTV-9. On 27 March 1987, Walden was sacked by new management after HSV-7 was taken over by the Fairfax group. He was told of his dismissal only minutes before going on air to present what became his final news bulletin for the station. Exactly a month later, Mal joined the Eyewitness News team at ATV-10 as a reporter and presenter of the segment "Mal's Melbourne", presenting human interest stories. Walden continued as relieving news presenter, reporter and weekend news presenter at ATV-10, as well as presenting special programming such as Young Australian of the Year and ATV-10's 30th Anniversary. In 1996, Walden took on the role of chief news presenter after David Johnston announced his return to HSV-7. He was appointed news presenter of the station's Ten News at Five alongside Jennifer Hansen and later Helen Kapalos. He celebrated 30 years in television news on 8 June 2000. In 2004, he published a detailed history of ATV-10 to commemorate the station's upcoming 40th anniversary. In September 2010, Walden was announced as presenter of Melbourne's 6:30 pm Ten Evening News bulletin which commenced in January 2011 but was axed four months later. After Helen Kapalos was dismissed in December 2012, Walden became solo presenter of Ten News at Five. In June 2013, Mal downscaled his role with Network Ten ahead of his intended retirement at the end of 2013 after 40 years as a news presenter and reporter. Walden became the Monday to Wednesday presenter with Stephen Quartermain presenting the Thursday and Friday night editions.- published: 04 Dec 2013
