What The UN Says About Spirulina:
Dear Friends, Official Members and Supporting States, and Stakeholders,IIMSAM's-Secretary-General Ambassador H.E. Remigio Maradona and Secretary-General of United Nations H.E. Ban Ki Moon The linkage between nutrition and human development is well recognized and so is the significance of quality nutrition in public health. Malnutrition is by far the most important single cause of illness and death globally. The costs of malnutrition in terms of lost development and productivity are enormous. Even mild to moderate malnourishment in the womb reduces future cognitive development of a child. It has serious impacts on groups that have traditionally been marginalized such as women and the girl child. Nutrition plays a crucial role in the reproduction of poverty from one generation to the next and must be tackled on an immediate priority basis to secure the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. Without the distinction of race, religion, political belief, economic or social condition, it is a fundamental right of everyone to be free from malnutrition and hunger; and have access to safe and nutritious food. Only when basic necessities are fulfilled will there be real progress. The enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health as the right of every human being cannot be realized unless there is a felt need for establishing equitable and sustainable food systems. IIMSAM envisions raising the level of nutrition and improvement of public health through Spirulina- a micro-algae abundant in essential proteins, minerals and vitamins that can be easily assimilated by the human body. Spirulina's preventive and curative aspects; and inherent benefits of easy availability, accessibility, and affordability; make it an important policy tool of tremendous practical significance to enrich the human capital across the globe especially among the Developing and the Least Developed Countries. We seek to build genuine and viable partnerships with the state and non-state actors, institutions and individuals to make them a willing and an active stakeholder in our aspirations and mission to eradicate malnutrition, attain global food security and bridge the health divide. As an entity that supports the UN Global Compact, IIMSAM is confident that businesses and the economic society, as part of their Global Social Responsibility would play a leading role in our endeavor to root out the scourge of malnutrition from the world. On behalf of IIMSAM, I am most pleased to invite you to join our IIMSAM Mandate to eradicate and endeavor to sensitize the global community of the urgent need of ending acute malnutrition and actuate collective efforts for the same by mainstreaming the use of Spirulina. Your support of our initiatives would help save the lives of almost forty-thousand children that suffer and perish every day from acute malnutrition. It would also empower the lives of almost a billion that are affected negatively by malnutrition worldwide. Despite being a young organization, IIMSAM has developed an identity of its own. Through many modalities and in many contexts, IIMSAM has consistently raised substantive issues that are close to its core within the United Nations Economic and Social Council agenda to promote the use of Spirulina against malnutrition and make it a key-driver to achieve global food security and bridge the health divide. IIMSAM aspires to be a catalyst for real progress in the fight against malnutrition, combining the enthusiasm and idealism of the young with the wisdom and grace of the more seasoned, consequently garnering the talents and abilities of those from around the globe, whom may want to join us and are in compatibility and willing to work in support of the UN system, in common pursuit of the principles and goals embodied in the Charter of the United Nations, as well as commitment to the principles and praxis of universality and multilateralism through the UN system. Your support is most crucial in our continued imperative work within the United Nations System and across the globe to realize a world free of malnutrition and hunger.
