ICT for Illiteracy Eradication -- Tabluter

One of the groups that are targeted in the ICT4IE project is rural women and women in deprived contexts. Although partnerships were made with different NGOs in rural and remote governorates as well as IT clubs to have access to the maximum number of illiterates (women and men), due to social customs and social traditions, women were still unreached since they are not allowed to leave home to attend illiteracy classes in the NGO or IT club in their governorate. To overcome such an obstacle, innovative solutions that recognize local norms were needed. For example, Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT), in partnership with the ICT Trust Fund and local NGOs in the Siwa Oasis (a remote oasis in the midst of the west desert in Egypt), has implemented a local project to produce a new infrastructure to help in increasing access to ICT for the local community. This tool, the "Tabluter", is based on the traditional wooden table known in Egypt as the tablya. The tablutor is a customized ergonomic embedded computer on a tableya. The embedded computer is a single CPU that runs for four independent users. Each user is equipped with his/her own screen, keyboard, mouse and sound card. The Tabluter is situated in an individual home where IT classes and illiteracy eradication classes are being held. Dhamar (Arabic: ذمار‎) is a city in southwestern Yemen. Dhamar is situated 100 km to the south of Sana'a, north of Ibb, and west of Al-Beidha, 2700 m above sea level. Its name Dhamar goes back to the king of Sheba and Dou-Reddan at 15-35 AD. whose name was Dhamar Ali Yahber, and whose statue was found at the city of Al-Nakhla Al-Hamraa ("The Red Palm"). This city is one of the archeological sites that are found near Dhamar. The city of Dhamar is the capital of the governorate and is situated on the main road, which connects Sanaa with a number of other governorates. This city was one of the famous Arabic and Islamic culture and scientific centers in Yemen. Its Great Mosque was built in the period of the caliph Abi-Bakr Al-Sadeek. The project is formed of two phases: PARNTERS I implemented in four governorates (Cairo, Alexandria, Minya and Dakahlya), and PARTNERS II in six governorates (Cairo, Alexandria, Mansoura, South Valley, Suez, and Minya). The two phases aim at disseminating the concept of citizenship and partnership through media and civic education, and developing leadership skills among young people.

The Education Reform Program (ERP) is a USAID/Egypt funded program (2004 2009) that supports the Ministry of Education national effort at both the central and local government levels. The program consists of two activities: The first addresses school-based reform, while the second addresses the policy and systemic constraints to sustainable reform by promoting educational decentralization, innovative professional development and leadership, social marketing, and data for decision-making. Success in either area supports and feeds into the other in an iterative and interconnected way. The program is integrated along five themes: Community Participation; Professional Development; Standards; Capacity Building for Decentralization; and Monitoring and Evaluation. ERP promotes school-based reform in 256 schools in seven governorates (Cairo, Alexandria, Fayoum, Beni Suef, Minya, Qena, and Aswan) by improving school quality, introducing modern teaching methods, increasing community participation, and strengthening school management.

President Mubarak had visited Carrefour hypermarket in Maadi on Thursday 17/9/2009 to get first-hand experience with market conditions and how far domestic trade is developing. Mubarak was accompanied by Prime Minister Nazif along with the ministers of interior, finance and foreign trade & industry. The tour followed Mubarak's ministerial meeting earlier Thursday on boosting domestic trade and developing trade centers and cooperatives to encourage local trade for the best interests of consumers. Minister of Foreign Trade Industry Rasheed Mohamed Rasheed said the president wanted to visit a trade compound which was upgraded by up-to-date methods. And there is a plan for establishing similar trade compounds in various governorates. Eng. Between January 18 and January 31 2010, the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) undertook a comprehensive training program in Erbil to familiarize its staff on polling and counting procedures in preparation for the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for 7 March 2010. A total of 360 IHEC staff members throughout the country were enrolled in these training sessions. Upon completion of the training sessions, they acted as trainers and cascaded the training to their colleagues in their respective governorates.
