Pop music (a term that originally derives from an abbreviation of "popular") is usually understood to be commercially recorded music, often oriented towards a youth market, usually consisting of relatively short, simple songs utilizing technological innovations to produce new variations on existing themes. Pop music has absorbed influences from most other forms of popular music, but as a genre is particularly associated with the rock and roll and later rock style.
From about 1967 the term was increasingly used in opposition to the term rock music, a division that gave generic significance to both terms. pop was more commercial, ephemeral and accessible. and ten or twenty years later inexpensive and more durable 45 r.p.m. records for singles "revolutionized the manner in which pop has been disseminated" and helped to move pop music to ‘a record/radio/film star system’. In the 1960s, the introduction of inexpensive, portable transistor radios meant that teenagers could listen to music outside of the home. Multi-track recording (from the 1960s); and digital sampling (from the 1980s) have also been utilized as methods for the creation and elaboration of pop music. By the early 1980s, the promotion of pop music had been greatly affected by the rise of Music Television channels like MTV, which "favoured those artists such as Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Prince who had a strong visual appeal".
Pop music has been dominated by the American and (from the mid-1960s) British music industries, whose influence has made pop music something of an international monoculture, but most regions and countries have their own form of pop music, sometimes producing local versions of wider trends, and lending them local characteristics. The spread of Western-style pop music has been interpreted variously as representing processes of Americanization, homogenization, modernization, creative appropriation, cultural imperialism, and/or a more general process of globalization.
The main medium of pop music is the song, often between two and a half and three and a half minutes in length, generally marked by a consistent and noticeable rhythmic element, a mainstream style and a simple traditional structure.
Harmony in pop music is often "that of classical European tonality, only more simple-minded." Clichés include the barbershop harmony (i.e. moving from a secondary dominant harmony to a dominant harmony, and then to the tonic) and blues scale-influenced harmony. "The influence of the circle-of-fifths paradigm has declined since the mid-1950s. The harmonic languages of rock and soul have moved away from the all-encompassing influence of the dominant function. ...There are other tendencies (perhaps also traceable to the use of a guitar as a composing instrument) – pedal-point harmonies, root motion by diatonic step, modal harmonic and melodic organization – that point away from functional tonality and toward a tonal sense that is less directional, more free-floating."

Houston is the most awarded female artist of all time, according to Guinness World Records, At the age of eleven, Houston began to follow in her mother's footsteps and started performing as a soloist in the junior gospel choir at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, where she also learned to play the piano. In addition to her mother, Franklin, and Warwick, Houston was also exposed to the music of Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight, and Roberta Flack, most of whom would have an impact on her as a singer and performer. While modeling, she continued her burgeoning recording career by working with producers Ben Dover, Bill Laswell and Martin Bisi on an album they were spearheading called One Down, which was credited to the group Material. For that project, Houston contributed the ballad "Memories". Robert Christgau of The Village Voice called her contribution "one of the most gorgeous ballads you've ever heard". As a result, the album began to sell strongly, and Houston continued promoting the album by touring nightclubs in the US. She also began performing on late-night television talk shows, which was not usually accessible to black acts. The jazzy ballad "Saving All My Love for You" was released next and it would become Houston's first #1 hit single in both the US and the UK. She was now an opening act for singer Jeffrey Osborne on his nationwide tour. At the time, MTV had received harsh criticism for not playing enough videos by African-American artists while favoring rock acts. By 1986, a year after its initial release, Whitney Houston topped the Billboard 200 album chart and stayed there for 14 non-consecutive weeks. The list included her concert grosses during 1986 and 1987. Over 72,000 people attended Wembley Stadium, and over a billion people tuned in worldwide as the rock concert raised over $1 million for charities while bringing awareness to apartheid. They felt her singing on record lacked the soul that was present during her live concerts. At the 1989 Soul Train Music Awards, when Houston's name was called out for a nomination, a few in the audience jeered. Still, Houston took a more urban direction with her third studio album, I'm Your Baby Tonight, released in November 1990. She produced and chose producers for this album and as a result, it featured production and collaborations with L.A. Reid and Babyface, Luther Vandross, and Stevie Wonder. The album showed Houston's versatility on a new batch of tough rhythmic grooves, soulful ballads and up-tempo dance tracks. Reviews were mixed. Rolling Stone felt it was her "best and most integrated album". As a result, the singer was named to the Red Cross Board of Governors. She then met R&B; singer Bobby Brown (formerly of New Edition) at the 1989 Soul Train Music Awards. After a three year courtship, the two were married on July 18, 1992. Nearly a year later, Houston gave birth to their daughter Bobbi Kristina Houston Brown, her first and only child, his fourth, on March 4. Brown would go on to have several run-ins with the law, including some jail time. Houston received a Razzie Award nomination for Worst Actress. The Washington Post said Houston is "doing nothing more than playing Houston, comes out largely unscathed if that is possible in so cockamamie an undertaking", After opening at number one and grossing $67 million in the US at the box office and $81 million worldwide, The soundtrack received strong reviews. Entertainment Weekly said "the album goes down easy, just as you'd expect from a package framed by Whitney Houston tracks.... the soundtrack waits to exhale, hovering in sensuous suspense" However, Halle Berry also had rights to the project and she got her version going first. The album gave Houston some of her strongest reviews ever. Rolling Stone said Houston was singing "with a bite in her voice"
In August 2001, Houston signed the biggest record deal in music history with Arista/BMG. She renewed her contract for $100 million to deliver six new albums, on which she would also earn royalties. Houston donated her portion of the proceeds.
In 2002, Houston became involved in a legal dispute with John Houston Enterprise. Although the company was started by her father to manage her career, it was now actually run by company president Kevin Skinner. Skinner filed a breach-of-contract lawsuit and sued for $100 million (but lost), stating that Houston owed the company previously unpaid compensation for helping to negotiate her $100 million contract with Arista Records and for sorting out legal matters. The line would become infamous.
In December 2002, Houston released her fifth studio album, Just Whitney. The album included productions from then-husband Bobby Brown, as well as Missy Elliott and Babyface, and marked the first time Houston did not produce with Clive Davis as Davis had been released by top management at BMG. The company had a then-policy of releasing executives once executives reached a certain age. (BMG would later hire Davis back to oversee several record labels as CEO of RCA Music Group). Upon its release, "Just Whitney" received mixed reviews.
Houston, having always been a touring artist, spent most of 2004 touring and performing in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Russia. In September 2004, she gave a surprise performance at the World Music Awards, in tribute to long time friend Clive Davis. Houston received a standing ovation for her performance. After the show, Davis and Houston announced plans to go into studio to work on her new album. However, the album did not receive any Grammy nominations. On January 26, 2010, Houston re-released the 25th anniversary edition of her debut album, entitled Whitney Houston – The Deluxe Anniversary Edition. Baker commented that "Because of what Whitney did, there was an opening for me... For radio stations, black women singers aren't taboo anymore." and is on Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's Definitive 200 list. In 2004, Billboard picked the success of her first release on the charts as one of 110 Musical Milestones in its history. In 1997, the Franklin School in East Orange, New Jersey was renamed to The Whitney E. Houston Academy School of Creative and Performing Arts. In 2001, Houston was awarded the first annual Lifetime Achievement Award by BET.
She came in third on MTV's 22 Greatest Voices, She is what many consider to be a "singer's singer" who has influenced countless other vocalists, both female and male. Rolling Stone, on her biography, stated that Houston "redefined the image of a female soul icon and inspired singers ranging from Mariah Carey to Rihanna." Lucille Désirée Ball (August 6, 1911 – April 26, 1989) was an American comedienne, film, television, stage and radio actress, model, film and television executive, and star of the sitcoms I Love Lucy, The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour, The Lucy Show, Here's Lucy and Life With Lucy. One of the most popular and influential stars in America during her lifetime, with one of Hollywood's longest careers, A year and a half later, Ball gave birth to their second child, Desiderio Alberto Arnaz IV, known as Desi Arnaz, Jr. Ball and Arnaz divorced on May 4, 1960.
On April 26, 1989, Ball died of a dissecting aortic aneurysm, at age 77. At the time of her death, she had been married to her second husband, standup comedian and business partner Gary Morton, for twenty-eight years. After an uncredited stint as one of the Goldwyn Girls in Roman Scandals (1933) she permanently moved to Hollywood to appear in films. She appeared in many small movie roles in the 1930s as a contract player for RKO Radio Pictures, including a two-reel comedy short with the Three Stooges (Three Little Pigskins, 1934) and a movie with the Marx Brothers (Room Service, 1938). She can also be seen as one of the featured models in the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers film Roberta (1935) and briefly as the flower girl in Top Hat (1935), as well as a brief supporting role at the beginning of Follow the Fleet (1936) During this time Ball taught a thirty-two week comedy workshop at the Brandeis-Bardin Institute. Ball is quoted as saying, "You cannot teach someone comedy, either they have it or they don't." When he was born, I Love Lucy was a solid ratings hit, and Ball and Arnaz wrote the pregnancy into the show (indeed, Ball gave birth in real life on the same day that her Lucy Ricardo character gave birth). Morton claimed he had never seen an episode of I Love Lucy due to his hectic work schedule. Her ashes were initially interred in Forest Lawn – Hollywood Hills Cemetery in Los Angeles, but in 2002 her children moved her remains to the family plot at Lake View Cemetery in Jamestown, New York, where Ball's mother, father, brother, and grandparents are buried. In November of that year, Lucille Ball was chosen as the second out of the 50 Greatest TV Icons, after Johnny Carson. In a poll done by the public, however, they chose her as the greatest icon.

Birth place | Montreal, Quebec |

Occupation | Comedian, musician, actor |
Nationality | Canadian |

Lajoie has released other songs: "Cold-Blooded Christmas," which tells a story in which he mistakenly shoots and kills Santa Claus thinking he is an intruder, then cuts the body into pieces and burns them in his fireplace (only to find out that the Santa was his Uncle Bob); "Alone in the Universe", a style parody of Coldplay with lyrics that deal with masturbation; "Michael Jackson is Dead", a criticism of those who reversed their opinion of Jackson after his death; "Radio Friendly Song", poking fun at 'canned' 4 minute soft rock that is popular on the radio; and the aforementioned "WTF Collective", a parody of rap groups such as Wu-Tang Clan, G-Unit, and D12. In the video, Lajoie acts as 12 different MCs: MC Confusing, MC Insecure, MC Amnesia, MC Public Urination, MC Fatigue, MC Doesn't Know What Irony Is, MC Gets Sidetracked Easily, MC Lethal Weapons 1, 2, & 3, MC Lethal Weapon 4, MC Shit My Pants Frequently, MC Final Verse, and the Chorus Guy. In "WTF Collective 2", Jon returns as MC Confusing, MC Fatigue, MC Final Verse and as a suicidal Chorus Guy, along with 8 new MC's, one of whom acts as 2 MC's (MC Knows Too Many Facts About Bees and MC In The Closet Homosexual), bringing the total up to 9 new MC's. Also new to the WTF Collective 2 are: MC Historical Inaccuracy, MC Don't Know How To Pluralize Word(s), MC Canadian Stereotype, MC Homophobic Fucking Asshole, MC Extremely Inappropriate Rhymes, and MC Extremely Politically Correct. After the Chorus Guy commits suicide at the end of the song, he is replaced by MC Vagina. Lajoie also recently released a video for "Pop Song", directed by Julien Demers-Arsenault, and choreography by Mabel Palomino. The song plays with the 90's boy bands, and today's teens artists, such as Justin Bieber and the Jonas Brothers.
Lajoie's songs are often parodies of everyday things, such as stay-at-home dads, pathetic attempts at having sexual intercourse with girls, and doing chores on Sunday afternoons. His commercial parodies advertise undesirable products like "pedophile beards" and "rapist glasses" (other products advertised included "serial killer vans," "public masturbator trenchcoats," a "there's gotta be something wrong with that guy hat", and pencil crayons) or mundane human behaviour such as "breathing". He also created commercials for "being gay", "not giving a fuck", "Hands" and "mainstream media". His other projects include song parodies, such as a parody of The Beatles' "Blackbird", including vulgar lyrics that spoof McCartney's state of mind at the time.
An occasional source of humor in Lajoie's videos is the appearance of his friend Steve, an Arabic, overweight man with a thick beard who doesn't speak often, except to say the line, "You want some [more] of this, bitch?" In "Everyday Normal Crew", Steve refuses to say it until Lajoie pays him. In the same video, Lajoie claims that Steve will "probably have a heart attack sometime soon".
Lajoie's videos have also portrayed him as a fan of the Montreal Canadiens, especially in the video Canadiens vs. Flyers in which he saves a woman being harassed by a man wearing a Philadelphia Flyers T-shirt. At the end of the video, Lajoie refers to Carey Price as "Jesus" Price.
