1950s TV and Music: Ivory Joe Hunter performs on "You Asked for It" (1951)
In this brief segment from the 1950s United States television series "You Asked for It", "jive" and "boogie-woogie" pianist Ivory Joe Hunter performs on "his coast-to-coast television debut". This show started on the now defunct DuMont Network before moving to ABC-TV. The show was recorded via Kinescope. The series presented random things requested by viewers (usually live, though popular filmed events were sometimes shown). In a vague sense, it was the closest thing in the 1950s to YouTube.

IVORY JOE HUNTER The Cold Gray Light of Dawn
IVORY JOE HUNTER The Cold Gray Light of Dawn From the Cassette: Im Coming Down With the Blues Ivory Joe Hunter was born in Kirbyville, Texas in 1914. As a youngster, Hunter developed an early interest in music from his father, Dave Hunter, who played guitar, and his gospel-singing mother. He was a talented pianist by the age of 13, and as a teenager, Hunter made his first recording for Alan Lomax and the Library of Congress in 1933 Hunter was a prolific songwriter, and some estimate he wrote more than 7000 songs. Among those songs are two that Presley put in the top 20: "My Wish Came True" and "Ain't That Loving You, Baby". Elvis also recorded "I Need You So", "It's Still Here", and "I Will Be True". He Passed Away In 1974. Lung cancer led to Hunter's death in Memphis, Tennessee at the age of 60. He was buried in native Kirbyville

Ivory Joe Hunter - I Almost Lost My Mind
10 October 1914, Kirbyville, Texas, USA, d. 8 November 1974, Memphis, Tennessee, USA. Although Hunter was a well-known figure in Texas through his radio shows, it was not until the 40s, when he moved to the west coast, that his career flourished. He established his own record companies, Ivory and Pacific, recording on the former with Johnny Moore's Three Blazers (the Exclusive licensed crossover hit 'Blues At Sunrise'), while the latter provided the outlet for Hunter's first R&B; chart-topper, 'Pretty Mama Blues'. Hunter continued his success with several singles recorded with sidemen from the Duke Ellington Orchestra before one of his most enduring compositions, 'I Almost Lost My Mind', became a second R&B; number 1 in 1950. A re-recorded version also proved popular when the singer moved to the Atlantic Records label later in the decade, but Pat Boone's opportunistic cover version was a greater commercial success. However, a further fine Hunter original, 'Since I Met You Baby', then swept to the top of the R&B; chart in 1956 and to number 12 in the national pop chart. Other big R&B; hits during this period included the King Records sides 'Don't Fall In Love With Me', 'What Did You Do To Me', 'I Like It', 'Waiting In Vain', 'Guess Who', 'Landlord Blues', 'Jealous Heart' and 'I Quit My Pretty Mama', while Hunter also scored success on MGM Records with the aforementioned 'I Almost Lost My Mind', 'SP Blues', 'I Need You So' (his third R&B; chart-topper), and 'It's A Sin'. Ivory Joe Hunter - Jealous Heart
Ivory Joe Hunter met with success as a singer, a prolific songwriter, and a piano player in a long and varied career in the music business. He was born in Kirbyville, Texas in 1914. His mother was a gospel singer and his father, Dave Hunter, played a guitar. He took an interest in music and in 1933 made his first recording, a cylinder recording for the Library of Congress. Joe had his own radio show on KFDM in Beaumont, Texas in the early 40's and eventually became program manager. His first commercial recording was with Johnny Moore's Three Blazers. Joe started his own label, Ivory, and recorded a song that he had written titled Blues At Sunrise; it became a regional hit. In 1942 Joe moved to the West Coast, where he started Pacific Records. In 1947 he recorded for 4 Star and signed with King. In 1949 he began to have some hits on the R&B; charts, such as I Quit My Pretty Mama and Guess Who; on both of these he was backed by some members of Duke Ellington's band. Then Joe signed with MGM and recorded I Almost Lost My Mind, which topped the R&B; charts in 1950. His I Need You So reached number 2 R&B; the same year, and Ivory Joe Hunter had become a hot commodity. He had a smooth delivery that packed a lot of appeal, and he began to be noticed in the country & western music community. By 1954 he had recorded more than a hundred songs and moved to the big label, Atlantic. His first song to cross over to the pop charts and meet with a great deal of success was Since I Met You ...
