The Via Domitiana is a busy dual carriageway cutting through the heart of the southern Italian seaside town of Castel Volturno. The less-observant tourist might miss it, but a look to the side of this road built during the Roman empire soon shows that this is no longer the fiefdom of ice cream-eating families and sunseekers. Dotted here and there are groups of Nigerian women and girls, clustered in twos and threes: they are trafficked prostitutes, selling sex for as little as €10 a time so that they might pay off enormous debts owed to their smugglers. Illegal immigrants first came to Castel Volturno from Nigeria in the 1980s to work on the tomato farms in the countryside but when those farms went out of business there was no work, legal or otherwise. Some of them soon realised there was a different kind of money to be made -- through the importing and selling of both drugs and humans in a district characterised by extreme poverty and high levels of violent crime. Since Castel Volturno sits in the heartland of the Camorra, a criminal network based in Naples, this could not be done without the consent of its local wing, the Casalesi clan. But as Nigerian gangsters extended their reach in a town that is now home to one of Europe's largest concentrations of illegal immigrants, the Casalesi reasserted its authority. In 2008 it killed six African men in a drive-by shooting -- the horror of the incident and the riots that followed is captured in Là-bas, a film set to premiere ...
Thousands of women deceived by promises of regular jobs in Europe being forced to work as prostitutes. Every year thousands of West Africans migrate to Europe in search of a better life. But for some, that search will end in tragedy as they fall victim to organised crime gangs. In one area of southern Italy, thousands of women from Nigeria are trapped in a nightmare world of prostitution. Many are trafficked illegally by Nigerian criminals, who deceive them with promises of regular jobs. Italy has an estimated 10000 madams, each controlling an average of two or three girls per year. Once a trafficked girl reaches Europe, she has to pay off debts to her madam of up to $85000. It will take her at least five years. Madams confiscate the girls' passports to stop them from escaping and charge them for rent, clothes and food. Threatened with violence if they do not comply, the girls also have to run risks with their clients. Al Jazeera's Juliana Ruhfus reports from southern Italy.
England's friendly against the Netherlands at Wembley on Wednesday has been called off following three nights of rioting in London. The Football Association confirmed the decision on their website on Tuesday. Carling Cup matches at Charlton, West Ham, Crystal Palace and Bristol City have all been postponed. However, Edgbaston officials say the third Test between England and India starting in Birmingham on Wednesday will go ahead as planned. Tthe Premier League has had talks with the police over this weekend's matches involving London clubs but believe it is too early for a decision to be taken. The FA's managing director of Club England Adrian Bevington wrote on Twitter: "Disappointing for game to be called off, but very good communication with Met [Metropolitan Police], Brent [Council] and Government today - sensible decision." Bert van Oostveen, chief executive of the Dutch federation the KNVB, explained: "The police in London could not guarantee the safety of our players and our supporters." The England team were still planning to train as normal at London Colney on Tuesday morning, before returning to their respective clubs. England general manager Franco Baldini told BBC Sport: "At least we got the chance to stay together and have a training session. "We are a bit disappointed - but mainly because of what has happened to London. All the rest is not that important. The next time we'll get together will be before the Bulgaria game on 29 August." This channel is brought to you by MeTee T-Shirts: T-shirt design in seconds & always free shipping. - Sunday August 7 2011 7:58 am www.cnn.com The current conflict in the Niger Delta arose in the early 1990s over tensions between the foreign oil corporations and a number of the Niger Delta's minority ethnic groups who felt they were being exploited, particularly the Ogoni and the Ijaw. Ethnic and political unrest has continued throughout the 1990s and persists as of 2007 despite the conversion to democracy and the election of the Obasanjo government in 1999. Competition for oil wealth has fueled violence between innumerable ethnic groups, causing the militarization of nearly the entire region by ethnic militia groups as well as Nigerian military and police forces (notably the Nigerian Mobile Police). Victims of crimes are fearful of seeking justice for crimes committed against them because of growing 'impunity from prosecution for individuals responsible for serious human rights abuses, has created a devastating cycle of increasing conflict and violence'. The regional and ethnic conflicts are so numerous that fully detailing each is impossible and impractical. However, there have been a number of major confrontations that deserve elaboration. Nigeria, after nearly four decades of oil production, had by the early 1980s become almost completely dependent on petroleum ...
In its first substantive action against Syria's five-month-old uprising, the UN Security Council on Wednesday condemned human rights violations and use of force against civilians by Syrian authorities. In a rare but not unprecedented move, Syria's neighbor Lebanon, where Damascus' influence is strong, disassociated itself from a formal statement agreed upon by the other 14 members of the council. The Security Council condemns the widespread violations of human rights and the use of force against civilians by the Syrian authorities. It further calls for all sides to act with utmost restraint, and to refrain from reprisals, including attacks against state institutions. The Security Council reaffirms its strong commitment to the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Syria, it says. It stresses that the only solution to the current crisis in Syria is through an inclusive and Syrian-led political process, with the aim of effectively addressing the legitimate aspirations and concerns of the population which will allow the full exercise of fundamental freedoms for its entire population, including that of expression and peaceful assembly. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said, the world has watched the deteriorating situation in Syria with the most profound concern, but the events of the past few days have been brutally shocking, Once again, I call on President Bashar al-Assad and the Syrian authorities to immediately cease all violence against their people, to ...
Child Murder by Finance Soars in the US - Direct Democracy is THE SOLUTION to Criminal Government
Child Murder by Finance Soars in the US Report paints devastating portrait of conditions of US children www.wsws.org The Children's Defense Fund (CDF) has released a report detailing the significant deterioration in the social conditions of children in the US since the onset of the recession. Focusing primarily on the years 2008-2010, "The State of America's Children: 2011," examines in depth the social calamity facing the youngest segment of society in all aspects of life. These conditions are the result of a tremendous growth of social inequality, combined with a governmental assault on social programs in recent decades by politicians of both big-business parties. For society's youngest members, this finds expression in the growth of poverty and hunger, attacks on education and welfare programs, and an increase in violence and abuse. The CDF report presents stark indices in various areas of social life. To cite one example: infant mortality rates for minority children in the United States rank behind the overall infant mortality rates in countries such as Costa Rica and Thailand; low infant birth weight occurrences happen more often in the US than in Nigeria and Kazakhstan. The report draws the conclusion that families "have become more fragile as jobs are lost, unemployment compensation has been reduced, public assistance and public health programs restrict access, housing foreclosures continue and affordable housing becomes scarcer."

Pachamama Prod. & Richard Jordan Prod. Ltd in assoc. with Traverse Theatre - Roadkill
Scottish-based Cora Bissett is an award-winning actor and theatre director. Over the course of her career, she has worked across an extremely diverse range of theatre styles from classical, physical, devised and experimental, creating her own devised shows and working collaboratively with artists from different genres. In 2009 she founded Pachamama Productions and her critically acclaimed work Roadkill, exposing the hidden world of sex-trafficking, was the first production in Edinburgh Fringe history to win every major theatre award 2010. Roadkill is based on a real-life encounter with a young woman from Benin City, Nigeria, who has been trafficked to Scotland. Staged in a seedy basement flat, the site-specific nature of the work places the audience in the young woman's world as you witness at close quarters how her hopes of a new life are turned into violent scenes of rape, brutality and captivity in the sleazy world of sex trafficking. Together with strong writing and excellent performances from the cast, this groundbreaking production is a powerful and deeply affecting piece of theatre which upsets and shakes the most hardened theatre goer to the core. Roadkill contains scenes of violence and is unsuitable for very young audiences. It will appeal to promoters interested in new writing, site-specific staging and issue-based theatre. 'Beautiful, brilliant and powerful enough to break into people's hearts. There is no counting the ways in which Cora Bissett's production ...
