Sangoma - Discovering the Shamans of South Africa
Support us now @ kck.st and be ONE of the 1000 backers of $10. In this feature film, a team of consciousness-explorers chronicle their adventure to bring home the shamanic wisdom of South Africa. Funding on Kickstarter is always all or nothing. If we don't reach our funding goal of $7500, we won't receive any funds. Come play your part in this full length film by backing this project today. We thank you in advance and welcome you on this incredible journey! Michael Brwon did not upload the video, nor is he involved in the Sangoma project, and it has nothing to do with his work of The Presence Process. ABOUT THIS PROJECT Our society, it feels, is entangled in its busi(y)ness. Many are cooped up in ties, while others are uploading their 101st profile picture. We're trying to squeez through the cracks of the cement we've poured on ourselves. Unfortunately, happiness is lost in this solid mix. How can we move again with the natural flow and re-align with the earth? South Africa's tribal culture may present us with a fresh perspective. That is if they still remain. Our oldest human traditions and the people who speak them are quickly dwindling into extinction. What if there's something we can all do about it? Together with you, we are creating a film to chronicle the shamans and wise ones - collectively hearing their living voices. Beginning in Johannesburg, an interviewing streak we will make, snaking around the cradle of homo-sapiens. Oral history, plant technologies, and ...

dancing sangoma
We got a chance to meet with this lady during our ministry time in Qwa Qwa. She described herself as a healer or a Sangoma - more commonly known as a witch doctor. She told us about being a 3rd generation Sangoma but that she lost her healing powers because she was disobedient to her ancestors. Shed have to slaughter 2 cows and a goat and prepare a giant meal to feed the village in order to get her powers back. She goes to church and believes in Jesus, but its difficult to say weather or not shes a Christian. We gave her a Bible and she was overwhelmingly thankful. Shes supposed to be going with us to church Sunday morning.

Sangoma demo Miriam Makeba 1987
After Miriam Makeba had left South Africa, her name has outgrown her art, one cause of which may be that she was not being her entire self on most of the recordings she made. During her stay in Guinée-Conakry, for instance, she recorded material that was so far from her cradle it was pityful and her recordings for the Syliphone label to this day remain the laughing stock of the brilliant body of work that was released on that label. Listening to the US version of Pata Pata, it is clear she is talking about South Africa, being produced by a non-South African producer, accompanied by non-South African musicians, singing to a non-South African audience, so again, she was not being her entire self. Of course, she was not to be envied because leaving her country had been involuntary. Perhaps, even (or especially) from her perspective, the greater goal of ending apartheid had a higher priority than producing great music. I guess she did a lot to raise the awareness in the western world, not only of apartheid, but that a country named South Africa even existed. After all, when she left, Nelson Mandela was still a "terrorist". However, titles such as The Empress of African Song and Mama Africa were attached to her by some who were completely out of touch with reality, and these included herself, since I've witnessed her own band members announcing her in those terms on the stage. When I saw her live once in 1990, every member of the band had a different nationality. The gig was ...

Zulu Wedding Song and Dance
Mafuti is a Zulu Girl working at the Simunye Community Tourism Office at the Khula Village just outside St.Lucia. She showed us (and many tourists) the Zulu wedding song and dance and also a Sangoma hut with the dancing for the antsisters. It is a facinating tour in a real old Zulu village, people still live like that are happy but poor.

Sangoma - faith healer
Excerpt. Sibongile Nene is one of just two sangomas in Canada. She claims to possess clairvoyant gifts that enable her to diagnose the spiritual cause of physical and mental problems. By "reading" the arrangement of bones thrown onto a table, she will trace an illness back to its supposed source in the ancestral bloodline. Her services, however, do not come cheaply: the cost of the initial consultation alone is $80 an hour. Programme: 360º Vision Editor: Barry Silverthorn
